A few weeks ago, I shared all the reasons I preferred to run outside, and now I’m going to dive into my favorite treadmill alternatives. While treadmills are an amazing invention, and are great for some of the running and walking population, they just don’t do it for me. The great news is that there are so many other options, if you’re like me and find the treadmill to be more of a “dread”mill.
Get In The Pool
Swimming or aqua jogging are two great alternatives to the treadmill if you can’t run safely outside. Being in the water helps you stay cool on days when the temperatures and humidity soar, making it a much safer option for exercise. Don’t forget your sunscreen. Of course, laps are a full body workout, but using a pool running or aqua jogging program is a nice way to accomplish something running-adjacent without hitting the pavement.
Hop On The Elliptical
So similar, and yet so different, the elliptical is great for your cardio needs when the treadmill just isn’t calling your name. You will burn the calories, and get similar movements, but you won’t have the impact on your knees and ankles. It’s a solid choice when you have to bring your cardio inside.
Spin It Out
Spinning comes in many shapes and sizes. If you can’t go for a run, you can take out your road bike or cruiser. A stationery bike is another choice: those come in regular and recumbent varieties, depending on your needs. You can also hop into a spin class, either alone or in a class setting. No, it’s not the same as running (nothing ever is), but cycling is a great cardio burn for those days when running is out and you can’t handle the treadmill.
When All Else Fails…
True story, I do like a walking pad somewhat better than a treadmill. It’s so close to being the same thing, but it’s also so much less intimidating and not quite as loud and cumbersome. I also like that there aren’t any rails or controls. If you absolutely need to get in some miles, this can be a great alternative to the traditional treadmill.

I agree with the aquajogging, and I also like the stairmaster (although “like” might not be the correct word…) In the end, like you said, nothing is the same as running. I’ll take any kind of running, outside or treadmill, over the alternatives! And… walking pad? I’ve never seen one of those!

It’s outdoors or nothing.

Cycling and walking, hands down, are my top two cardio alternates, but I will usually make an outdoor run happen regardless. In the freezing winter and humid summer, I’ll do almost anything to avoid a treadmill….

I’ve never seen a walking pad! Seems to be quite practical, not as big as a treadmill.
My alternative to running is definitely the bike. When I had my Achilles injury or stress fracture the bike served me well.
Or simply walking outside. Being outdoors is crucial for my mental well-being.

I am all about being outdoors.

I wish I had a treadmill. I’d rather run outside but sometimes that isn’t possible. I am happy to have a Peloton bike as an alternative to running outside.

The Peloton is a great option!
