This time of year, running in April showers is just a fact of life. It’s not my favorite, as I prefer sunny skies and cool breezes, but I’ve learned to deal with it. Keep reading for some of our top tips for navigating the precipitous season.

Check The Forecast
The first thing I always do is check the forecast to make decisions about if I’m going to run. I despise being out in the rain (it’s more swampy than refreshing here) so I admit to adjusting my plans based on the radar. We are also very prone to thunder and lightning. For safety’s sake, I’ll take a pass when I see that in forecast.

Wear The Proper Gear
Soggy running never sounds fun to me, so I always make sure to gear up accordingly. I start with one of my favorite Alter Ego Running hats (I’m even an ambassador – use code RUNSWITHPUGS to save on your next online order) to keep the water out of my face. I wear older shoes so my new ones don’t get saturated. And of course, I wear my Jogology socks to keep blisters from forming. I don’t usually bother with a rain jacket because they usually get too hot and feel too clammy for me to be comfortable.

Watch The Road
Rain can make things slick and slippery, so I always take a little extra time with my footing when we get a rain storm. I also like to avoid puddles, because again, wet shoes do not bring me joy.

Protect Your Skin
Rain + running + fabric = the potential for chafing, and I am NOT here for it. Use an anti-chafing product on your thighs, under your bra straps, and even on your toes and inner arms… anywhere that could end up with a stinging rash. You’ll thank me.

Take It Inside
If all else fails and the weather is just too awful to be out, take your run to the treadmill. It’s not my preferred way of completing miles, but if it’s too wet and lightning is looming, it’s the right thing to do.

Great tips, Jenn!
I’m stalking the weather for Boston on Monday like it’s my job. The one thing I’m fearing is cold, driving rain. I haven’t run in that kind of weather for years…. right now, it’s looking good: sunny at 13° Celsius, exactly like we have here in Zurich right now. I hope it stays that way!
My fingers and toes are crossed for you!
Great tips, Jenn! While rain on a run can feel so refreshing, I always hated when it stopped mid-run and left a swampy mess in its wake. That always seemed worse than no rain at all. I ran my first marathon in an absolute deluge of rain all 26.2 miles so I learned quickly what worked and what didn’t. Luckily, I had dressed and “Body Glided” appropriately.
It poured during my marathon as well. And then it was like a steam bath. I think that’s the I lost my mind lol.
Wearing the proper gear definitely helps. I don’t mind the rain if is warmer. We have had so much lately!
I think we are finally in for a dry spell.
Great tips! I can’t wait till I get a treadmill. It will be in the Winter but still excited about it.
