When it comes to running, I’m firmly on Team Runs Alone. I love lacing up, sneaking out into the sunrise, and setting off at my own pace. There’s something grounding about the quiet miles where it’s just me and the road.
That said, even as someone who prefers to run alone, I’ve learned there’s real value in joining up with a partner or a group every once in a while. Running is an individual sport, sure, but there’s power in numbers. Whether you’re training for a big race or just looking to shake up your routine, running with others can bring benefits you might not expect.
Let’s talk about five reasons to log some miles with company!

Groups Are Great For Accountability
We all know the hardest step is the first one: getting out the door. When someone else is waiting for you at the trailhead or track, you’re way less likely to hit snooze. Having a running buddy or group helps keep you consistent, which can be especially useful when training for races.

Pacing Support & Motivation
When you’re running alone, it’s easy to fall into your comfortable pace. With a partner, you may find yourself pushing a little harder or, if you’re prone to overdoing it, slowing down when you need to. A good running group or partner will keep you honest and motivated without letting you burn out.

There Is Safety In Numbers
The sad reality is that running solo isn’t always ideal from a safety perspective, especially on early mornings, dark evenings, or less-trafficked routes. Running with a partner or group adds an extra layer of security and peace of mind. Plus, it makes long runs in new areas way less intimidating.

Shared Knowledge + Tips
Running with others can be like having a built-in classroom. You might pick up tips on fueling, gear, form, and even new race recommendations. It’s also fun to swap stories about things like the good races, the bad runs, and the hilarious “you had to be there” moments.

Community + Connection
At its heart, running is about more than just miles. It’s about connection. Running with others builds friendships and a sense of belonging. Whether it’s a weekly social run or a race-day cheer squad, having a running community means you’re never in it alone.

I’ll always love my solo runs, but, as you can see, there are definitely benefits to running with others. From accountability to safety to building community, the perks are real. Even if you’re an introverted runner like me, trying out a group run now and then might be exactly what you need to level up your training and enjoy the miles in a whole new way.
