Running is often framed as a solo sport, a journey of personal bests and individual goals. But the truth is, the running community is one of the most supportive, inclusive groups out there, a giant, wonderful network of encouragement that lifts us up on our toughest miles. We owe a lot to this community!
As the year winds down and we focus on gratitude, it’s the perfect time to pay it forward. Giving back doesn’t require a lot of time or money; often, it just requires a little intention. Let’s talk about simple, powerful ways we can support the sport and the people who make it special.

Volunteer At A Local Race
You know the feeling when a volunteer hands you water or screams your name near the finish line? That energy is everything. Volunteering gives you a unique, supportive perspective on racing. You get to be the one making the magic happen, from handing out medals and water, to directing runners on the course. It’s an easy, fun way to support your local running community, and basically guarantee good running karma.

Run For A Charity
Most races include some kind of charity component with proceeds going to support a particular cause, but you can take it one step further. Commit to a charity bib for your next big race, and raise money for a cause close to your heart. Connecting your miles to a larger mission provides incredible motivation on race day and directs funds toward vital work. When you are accepted to run for a charitable organization, you generally receive your race entry, a branded team singlet, and a built in support network to help you on your way, in exchange for your fundraising efforts.

Mentor A New Runner
Remember the nerves of your very first run? Well, you’re not alone. If you’re an experienced runner, one of the best gifts you can offer is guidance and patience. Offer to run with someone taking up the sport for the first time, provide answers to their questions , or simply share your favorite simple route or race. Your encouragement can be the difference between someone quitting and finding a lifelong passion.

Donate Useable Gear And Shoes
Runners go through shoes faster than anyone, and it’s painful to throw away perfectly good running shoes just because they’re retired from your marathon rotation. Organizations like Soles4Souls or local high school sports programs are always in need of gently used running shoes and gear. A pair of retired shoes from your closet could be a meaningful tool for someone else to start their own journey. It’s very easy to find the shoe donation spot at the Gate River Run… it’s right by the giant Hart Bridge costume! Yes, someone runs the entire 15K in this getup every year.

Be The Best Cheerleader
This is the easiest and most fun way to give back! Make a sign, find a fun spot along a race course (any distance!), and cheer your heart out. You may not know the runners, but your enthusiasm and support will power someone through their toughest mile. You are directly injecting positive energy into the community.

The miles we log are important, but the relationships and the support we exchange with our running community are what truly keep us going. We all benefit from the positive energy on the pavement, so let’s make sure we’re contributing to it!
