Let’s be honest: some days, the relationship between a runner and the road is… strained.
Maybe it’s drenching humidity. Or maybe it is the 3:00 AM alarm to beat the heat and get a jump on the day’s activities. And just maybe it’s the fact that, sometimes, my legs feel like lead and my lungs feel three sizes too small.
But even on the days I “hate” running, I wouldn’t trade it for anything.
In honor of the cold mornings, the heavy layers, and deep dedication of runners everywhere, here is my ode to the run.

I hate the way you wake me up, and how you make me sore.
I hate the way you wear me out, and make me crave the floor.
I hate my heavy running shoes, and every blistered toe.
I hate the way the heat will chafe, everywhere I go.
I hate the way I have to stretch, and how I have to fuel.
I hate the way the sunrise waits, with humidity so cruel.
I hate the hot and burning sun, and moisture in the air.
I hate the way I look in gear, with messy, matted hair.
I hate the way the hills feel long, and how my lungs might burst.
I hate the way that starting mile is always, always worst.
I hate the way you’re constant, and the way you never end.
But mostly I hate the way I don’t hate you.
Not even close.
Not even a little bit.
Not even at all.

Happy running! Do you have a love-hate relationship with running, or anything else?
