Happy April Fools Day! For runners, this is the perfect opportunity to inject some lighthearted fun into our often-serious training schedules. We spend hours logging miles, pushing our limits, and analyzing our split times, so a well-timed, harmless prank can be just the thing to break the monotony and share a good laugh with our running buddies.
Before we dive in, a quick reminder: keep your pranks safe, light, and make sure your friends actually find it funny. The goal is a shared chuckle, not an injury or humiliation ritual. With that important disclaimer out of the way, let’s explore some April Fools pranks specifically for the running community!

The Squeaky Sneaker
Take a tiny piece of folded parchment paper, or a small bit of dry pasta and slide it under the insole of your friend’s running shoe, right near the heel. Every single step will produce a faint crunch or squeak, in addition to being mildly irritating. They will likely stop several times during their run to check for pebbles or damage.

The Gel Switcheraroo
Carefully open their favorite energy gel and stealthily replace the filling with something unexpected like apple sauce or chocolate syrup. To up the ante, use something sour or tart like plain Greek yogurt. Be mindful of allergies. You can do the same thing with their hydration and swap their water for electrolytes or juice. I would skip adding alcohol for safety and consideration reasons.

Lace It Up
When your running buddy isn’t looking, adjust the laces of one of the shoes they will be wearing. Make it just slightly off by skipping an eyelet or lacing all the way to the very top eyelet. Either the laces will feel wrong, or they will be too short or uneven in some way. Runners can be picky about the feel of their laces, so this will absolutely drive someone bonkers until they figure it out.

The GPS Swap
Ask to check out your friend’s Garmin or running watch, and swap the distance from miles to kilometers (or vice versa) in the settings. It will be confusing when their splits run long or fall short, and it will take them a moment to figure out what’s going on.

The most important prank of all? Shared smiles! The best pranks are the ones that end in laughter, not tears or hurt feelings. Whatever trick you choose to pull, make sure it’s coming from a place of affection. the real goal is to create a funny memory you can share for miles to come. So go ahead: plan your April Fools Running prank! Pro tip: have your came ready for the reaction shot! After all, the only thing better than a strong finish is a strong laugh with your crew!
