What’s Your Back-To-Routine Plan For Fall?

August 4, 2026      Leave a Comment

As the summer heat finally begins to back off (not here, but in more Northern places) and school starts back for the year, it’s hard not to feel that familiar urge to reset. Summer is incredible for spontaneous aventures, long weekend trips, and just going with the flow, but fall is when I want to lock in my focus. Whether you’re shaking off a summer lull, building base miles, or gearing up for a late-season race, here’s how to set up an autumn routine that actually feels good, and sticks.

Take Inventory Of Your Goals

Before you print out a fresh calendar or try to stack your weekends with every trail outing imaginable, get real about what this season is for.

  • Are you chasing a specific finish line? If you have an autumn half, marathon, or trail race coming up, your weekly schedule needs to protect your long run and give recovery the respect it deserves.
  • Are you rebuilding your base? If summer heat kept your mileage low, fall is the most comfortable time of year to lay down steady, low-stress miles without fighting humidity.
  • Are you mixing in more adventure? Maybe running takes a slight backseat while fastpacking, autumn hiking, or gravel riding take over.

Pick one main focus so your schedule isn’t constantly fighting against itself.

Lock In Your Weekly Anchors

The fastest way to ruin a fall routine is trying to fit your training into whatever random pockets of time happen to be left over at the end of the day. Sit down and claim your non-negotiables first:

  • The Long Run: Pick the exact morning or afternoon that belongs strictly to your longest trail or road effort.
  • Strength Sessions: As mileage ticks up, two short 20-to-30-minute strength sessions a week keep your hips, calves, and core durable. Put them on the calendar right after run days so they actually happen.
  • True Rest Days: Hard efforts require real downtime. Treat your rest days with the same level of commitment as your workout days.

Streamline Your Gear Strategy

A good routine relies on zero friction. Daylight shrinks fast in the autumn, and temperature swings between start and finish times can be wild.

  • Set up a grab-and-go station: Keep your headlamp, reflective gear, and cold-weather layers (arm warmers, light windbreaker, gloves) in one dedicated spot near the door. Early morning or late afternoon runs should take about two minutes to prep for.
  • Check your shoe rotation: If you logged heavy summer miles, check the tread and midsole wear now. Stepping up fall volume on dead foam is a fast track to nagging injuries.

Make Room For Micro-Adventures

Getting back into a rhythm doesn’t mean your weeks have to become boring. Fall offers some of the best weather of the entire year for short, punchy outings that fit right around a normal schedule.

  • Golden Hour Trail Runs: Swap one midweek road run for a local trail session right at dawn or dusk to catch the cooler air and changing colors.
  • Weekend Destination Miles: Use your weekend long run as an excuse to explore a nearby park or state trail you haven’t visited in a while. Pack a thermos of hot coffee or an iced drink for a little tailgate reset after.

Master The Post-Run Transition

Once the air cools down, your body temperature drops fast the second you stop moving. A big part of staying healthy through the seasonal shift comes down to how you finish your workout:

  • Layer up right away: Keep a clean, dry hoodie or warm jacket right in your car so you can toss it on immediately.
  • Refuel intentionally: Swap summer popsicles for warm, nutrient-dense meals (soup season!) and steady hydration to keep your immune system strong as seasonal bugs start floating around.

What does your fall reset look like?

Drinking in that sunshine for sure! It was a bea Drinking in that sunshine for sure!

It was a beautiful morning that turned quickly into a beautiful day. Sundays are hard because they are immediately followed by Mondays, and Mondays are hard.

Lots to catch up on this week! April is chock full of holidays, birthdays, days off, and events, so let’s get to it!

About this morning… I was up and out early to dri About this morning…

I was up and out early to drive to Flagler Beach for the #Missionpossible5k.

It was a small, well organized event, with an easy-to-follow course (the last mile was almost exclusively an ocean view), with great shirts and swag.

I was really pleased with my performance, and even more pleased with this beach sunrise. I’ll share more on the #RunnersRundown on Wednesday, so stay tuned!

Where did you run or race this weekend?

Oh, hello long sleeves. I’m here for it. So good Oh, hello long sleeves. I’m here for it.

So good to stretch the legs today. I was super sore after a @runsmartofficial cross training session last night, and needed to just get out there and let the fresh air work its magic.

What are you up to today? I really need to take a moment with my calendar and get some plans locked into place.

Check out those blue skies! I got to sleep in AND Check out those blue skies!

I got to sleep in AND take advantage of some cooler temps. It really didn’t warm up until my last mile and that was just fine.

I feel like this month and next are really just flying by. So much is going on, and I want so badly to enjoy it all, including the crisp, sunny days where we find them!

Happy Monday! I don’t know about you all, but you Happy Monday!

I don’t know about you all, but your girl is TIRED. It is so hard to roll out of bed some mornings. Ugh.

I managed (finally) and banked six miles in some gross humidity. And now it’s time for some self care and then back to work.

Also. We have somehow acquired a pecan tree? Any tips on the growth and care of this would be greatly appreciated!

Sunday fun day! Just a short walk to start the da Sunday fun day!

Just a short walk to start the day and work out some stiffness. Some days, my ankle just doesn’t want to cooperate 🫤

I have been making graphics and content all day for a client, and now I’m about to do hair and makeup for a little event. Wheee!

This week is going to be BUSY! There’s a lot of changes to the regular routines (nails, a digital learning day, after school and weekend programming) and I have a race on Saturday and bocce ball on Sunday!

Who else is ready to dive in?!
