week 79: when running is therapy

the ugly side of summer running

week 6 (20): road trips while injured

February 10, 2020      31 Comments

Road trips have always been a huge part of our family dynamic, and when I broke my leg, our travel lives got shut down quite quickly. I just knew I had to get it together for the Sister Site Conference: I was so excited for it and I have missed out on so many things because of my injury. Letting another fun event pass by was absolutely out of the question.

Sunday – pt exercises

On Sunday morning, we drove to pick up little man and celebrate Papa Bear’s birthday with a big, delicious breakfast out. The rest of the day was quiet. We just sat around and watched TV and puttered around the house. Sometimes, that’s just what we need.

Monday – physical therapy

My favorite part of Monday’s physical therapy session was wearing my new snakeskin leggings. They are absolutely the cutest, most comfortable tights I own, and I would live in them if I could.

road trips

Tuesday – pt exercises

I handled all my range of motion moves throughout the day, as well as managed some tidying of the house. I still can’t do a lot of chores for extended periods of time, but it’s getting better.

In the afternoon, Mr PugRunner dropped me off so I could get a fresh cut and color. It felt great to have new nails, new brows and new hair.

road trips

Wednesday – pt exercises

Another day of PT moves – I really try very hard to go through a circuit about four times a day. It’s never convenient, but I know it’s worth doing.

In the afternoon, I handled packing my suitcase. Something about road trips gets me so excited to pack.

road trips

Thursday – physical therapy

We had to reschedule my session as we would be out of town on Friday, but it was great all the same. I felt really strong and left my appointment on top of the world!

road trips

As soon as little man got home from school, we hopped in the car and started the drive to Orlando. A huge windstorm swept through the area, and we made it out of town before the worst of it.

The drive was very uneventful, and we arrived at Disney’s Coronado Springs Convention Center for check in. I was among the first there, and was happy to snag my badge and check-in gifts so we could go to our hotel for dinner and bedtime.

Friday – #SisterSiteConf20 Day 1

I reported back to the convention center bright and early on Friday morning for breakfast, the welcome, and the keynote speech. It was really exciting to be there as part of the St. Augustine Moms Team, and even though I was so overwhelmed, I was ready to learn.

road trips

From 8:30 until 3:30, I sat in on sessions, soaking up all kinds of blogging and social media related information. We broke for lunch and snacks as fuel for all the ideas that fired our way.

Afterwards, we headed to our rooms to prep for a Moms Night Out at Hollywood Studios, hosted by Walt Disney World. As part of our weekend, we were transported to Hollywood Studios, given a few hours to play in the parks, and then treated to a private viewing area for the Star Wars fireworks show and a private Star Wars dessert party.

I quickly realized I wasn’t able to go on any of the fun rides because of my leg, so settled for a (slow, hobbling) walking tour of the new Galaxy’s Edge before dinner. It was breathtaking.

road trips

The fireworks show was stunning and dessert was so fun! I couldn’t get over how special this weekend had turned out to be.

road trips

Saturday – #SisterSiteConf20

Things started a little later on Saturday morning, so I was able to get some sleep. Again, I attended lots of great sessions and took in so much great info. When things wrapped up for the day, it was back to the hotel to prep for a fancy dinner, dancing and The Mom Awards. I confess I didn’t feel super festive by this point of the evening, but I chose to put on my happiest face and enjoy the last night of conference to the best of my abilities.

Goal-getting

Needless to say, I am exhausted. Road trips are the best but they can leave you worn out, even when you’re at your best. The word assigned to me this weekend was “trooper”, because I just kept powering through. Of course, now my foot and ankle are complaining a little, but all in all, I think I did a good job managing my walking and rest.

In other exciting news, I found out that I was selected as part of Team Road ID! Safety first in all things and I love Road ID tags as a great way to communicate identification, allergies, ICE contacts, and medical conditions in case of an emergency. Save $10USD off your Road ID purchase of $20 or more with code JENNIFER10OFF.

I am linking up with the Weekly Rundown, with Confessions of A Mother Runner and Running on the Fly! Check them out!

Sounds like you really maximized your time at the conference while taking care of your foot at the same time. Great job with the week!

I’m glad you were able to get to the conference…that had to feel good after all the ‘hibernating” that’s been forced upon you. It looked like a grand time 🙂

I confess that i was really considering bailing on the dinner because I was so tired and overwhelmed, but I was glad that I let myself go for a bit. It was such a great opportunity and I was glad to make the most of it.

Ha! That’s what I said to the boys! I made it all the way up to the actual ride vehicles at Flights of Passage and had to take a fast exit because the restraints close on the back of your legs, and I just wasn’t comfortable with that. I got to go on two things the whole weekend, and while it was fine and I was happy for little man to have so much fun, I want to do Slinky Dog and Smuggler’s Run and all that jazz.

I did a fairly good job at getting around. I did end up with the knee scooter in the evenings and you’ll see I had to surrender to a wheelchair on Sunday for Animal Kingdom, but I hung in there. It was much needed.

It was a really great weekend. I am a writer and sales + community coordinator for St. Augustine Moms, which is part of the City Mom Collective. This was a blogging/social media conference for the owners and teams of these City Mom sites. I met so many great women and learned so much, both for my role at St. Augustine Moms, and in my regular blogging life.
