Welcome back to the Fit Five Friday linkup! Sometimes, part of wellness can be as easy as sharing things over a cup of coffee, with a friend, so that’s what this week is all about. Virtually, of course.
Join us for this month’s Ultimate Coffee Date. After reading here, head on over to visit Coco and Deborah, our awesome link-up hosts.
Over coffee, I would tell you…
That cancer (and similar diseases and conditions) can go off itself. Straight to Hades. It’s just not fair that so many are devastated by this cruel disease, and no one deserves it. Period. End of.
Over coffee, I would tell you…
That I will NOT be trying the Pink Velvet Macchiato from Dunkin. Ya girl went in for the Iced Sugarplum Macchiato, but this one doesn’t hit the same way. Apparently, there are notes of cream cheese (???) in the beverage, to call to mind red velvet cake, and I just think that might be going a bit too far. Dunkin, I love you, and this is so pretty, but I’m sticking with my regular order for now.
Over coffee, I would tell you…
I won a vacation! Seriously! I’m always entering contests and giveaways on Instagram, and sometimes, I get lucky! I have until the end of the year to make use of this trip, and we are so looking forward to visiting somewhere new and different. Since we are a virtual school family, we have the flexibility to travel in the off times, which will make even more perfect!
Over coffee, I would tell you…
That I need to find a way to recharge. I’ve been really good about trying to stay on top of my mental and emotional health, but I’ve noticed myself getting very tired of being “on” and losing patience very quickly, with everyone. Truthfully, I don’t know how anyone has made it the last year with their emotional state in perfect shape, so I’m trying to give myself grace in the matter, but it’s hard when the world keeps turning and the expectation is to be a productive member of society and your family. I’ve found some solace in reading, but I need to focus my attention on something else, as well. Stay tuned.
Over coffee, I would tell you…
That I am really glad I started my Balance Challenge, and that I’m already noticing a slight improvement after a few days (in my right side. My left is solid as a rock). Since I feel more hopeful, I may proceed to a yoga challenge in March, to keep building strength in my right foot and toes. Not to get ahead of myself, of course, but this may have been the push I needed to recommit myself to further improvement on my recovery.
What would you share over coffee?

Congrats on winning that giveaway! Your post has reminded me that I haven’t had a coffee out in almost a year. I used to drink Starbucks pretty regularly so its definitely saved me alot of money this year!
runswithpugs says
I bet it has! The coffee habit can add up, for sure.
Michelle D. says
Wow how fun to win a getaway!
That new Dunkin’ coffee sounds…um…interesting LOL Cream cheese, really?!
That balance challenge sounds like a good one – my left side could certainly use some work.
runswithpugs says
The challenge doesn’t take up too much time, which is a positive. And I’m seeing improvement, which is another positive.
I like cream cheese as much as the next person, but I don’t want it in my coffee. I don’t think. I guess I can’t knock it unless I try it.
Darlene S. Cardillo says
Wow. That’s great about the vacation. Lucky you.
I’m a Starbucks girl. Lol.
My balance is off. Good for you for working on it.
runswithpugs says
I love the Starbucks iced pistachio latte. And their cold brews. But none of our Starbucks are convenient, so I tend not to go to them unless I really have a craving.
Debbie says
How exciting about winning a vacation! I rarely get lucky on IG contests but I’m so happy for you. And the idea of a little travel sounds so good!
This pandemic has hit us all in various ways. It is hard to be always “on” and I imagine that for a parent to keep staying positive in spite of it all is the hardest of all.
Yes, cancer sucks. I lost my sister to cancer and it was terrible.

I’m so sorry about your sister.
I want to protect A from so much, but there are days when I just say straight up “this sucks. everything sucks. I’m sorry it sucks, but here we are.” Stellar parenting, right? But it’s the truth, and sometimes, he needs to know that there are days when it’s going to be awful and we just have to ride it out. Ugh.
Marcia says
Congrats on the IG win! It’s been awhile since I’ve won anything on there. That said, I guess I haven’t been entering either. That Dunkin concoction is over the top. I suppose people will go for it out of curiosity though! A balance challenge sounds great!
runswithpugs says
There are some fun coffee drinks out there, but sometimes, it’s too much. I’ll get things for the heck of it, sometimes, but this one didn’t sound super appealing.
Kim G says
Congrats on winning that vacation giveaway – that’s awesome!
I 100% agree that I don’t think anyone escaped 2020 with their mental health totally in tact. Something that I didn’t think would help me is meditation. Even if it’s just for 5 minutes, it’s a good way to reset and bring a bit more balance.
runswithpugs says
My brain is way too frantic for meditation lol. I wander very easily and then it just snowballs into madness. I am going to try a lot more reading, and I still haven’t started writing nonblog stuff. I need to do that.
Erica @ Erica Finds says
Congrats on the win! That sounds like a great getaway. I need a getaway! Winter in Chicago is tough when it’s not a pandemic. I’ve been embracing winter running and have been trying to get outside to run for at least 20 minutes per day and usually more. Thank god for running!
runswithpugs says
I’m sure that’s cold but also very invigorating! You guys have had one heck of a winter, so I can imagine it’s even harder with the pandemic on top of it.
Laurie says
Wow! You are so lucky. congrats on winning the getaway. I hope you have fun. I think a lot of people have had their mental health tested this year, including me. I think I am over the worst of it now and you will get through it too. Thank goodness we have running to help with our mental health. Giving yourself some grace is a great idea. Nice work on the balance challenge. I should do something like that. My balance could definitely use some improvement!
runswithpugs says
Seriously. I would be lost without running. You’re right. We are going to get through this. One way or another.
Chocolaterunsjudy says
Congrats on winning a vacay! Sweet! Even better that you don’t have to fly. We’re really hoping this fall will be the right time for us. I’m hoping at some point we’ll feel okay flying. Mr. Judy hasn’t seen his mother in a year!
Being on is super draining. Interested to see what you come up with.

I love that we don’t have to fly LOL!. I am all about that.
Poor Mr. Judy. I hope fall is your time.
Kimberly Hatting says
Congrats on the giveaway trip! When I was recovering from my knee episode, and had to give myself at-home infusions, I had to time them slowly. I found that if I did 50 slow leg lifts (on each side), the timing worked out to be around 5 minutes. A side-effect was that my quads got a little more toned and my single-leg balancing improved a lot 😉 Great job with all your progress!!
runswithpugs says
That’s a great trick! I am building up to that! My quad on the height is pretty solid. There’s just some weakness in my toes and foot that is leading to the balance issue. I have long toes, that probably played a huge role in my stability, and now that they are so much weaker, it’s hard. I just need to keep putting them to work. Blah.
Renée @runlaugheatpie says
Jenn! that’s so cool that you won that giveaway! congrats!
I’ve been losing it a bit too. I am reeling things in this month. Focusing a bit more on my mental health too so that I’m not so snappy and quick to get upset. I’m going to do some mediation and get some yoga in (with Judy) and I think that will help.
runswithpugs says
I am so excited! I don’t want to say I never win anything, but I don’t often win BIG things. This will be great.
I hate myself like this, so I need to get it under wraps. We have a lot of hormones in the house (mine and A’s), plus being up each other’s butts all the time, plus the nasty weather, plus Mr PugRunner working more hours. It adds up. We will get through, but we just have to be mindful of what sets us off and how to cope. Hugs to you.
Zenaida Arroyo says
How fun that you won that giveaway! Perfect timing. Well, that new coffee sounds “interesting”. Hmm, now I am curious about it.
runswithpugs says
The coffee is so pretty! But it just doesn’t sound great. Now, the iced pistachio latte at Starbucks? Yes, please.
Coco says
Congratulations on winning that vacation! How fun. The Peloton strength for runners classes have a lot of single leg and balance work — they can be humbling!
Thanks for joining the coffee date!
runswithpugs says
I’m mad because I used to be so solid in all my balance. However, daily focus on it is helping.
Shathiso says
Whoop! Whoop! Oh wow, I would love to win a vacation! So glad you have until the end of the year to use it! I’m sure by then things will be more normal.
I hear you on the recharging.. I really hear you.
runswithpugs says
I am so excited! We just got the brochure for the area and it has everything I need!
I think we all need a recharge, no?
Jenny says
Not sure what the history with your foot is, but I’ve also been working on balance and strengthening my gimpy foot (still recovering from plantar fasciitis and a heel spur.) Very cool that you’re already seeing improvement.
Yes! Cancer sucks the big one!!! My sister just finished chemo for her colon cancer, and it’s been quite a year. Chemo and a scary pandemic do not go well together. Things are looking up now though.
That’s awesome you won a vacation- it’s a sign that 2021 is going to be a lucky year for you 🙂
runswithpugs says
I broke my fibula and tibia in my ankle just over a year ago. It’s all put back together with screws and plates, but there is some nerve damage and weakness. I had to quit PT because of the pandemic (although I was very close to done so am very fortunate), but it’s been a long road back.
I wish your sister the best! I hope everything goes well <3
Debbie @ Deb Runs says
Congrats on winning a vacation – that’s so exciting! I hope the getaway gives you exactly what you need to recharge.
I have to ask, where did you get the white script “family” that’s on your picture wall? I’ve noticed it before and love it! I need something similar for a collage wall I’m putting together for our family room in the basement.
runswithpugs says
I think it came from Michaels or similar. They always have random stuff like that. However, etsy has TONS of sellers that do the wood cursive letters and words, so I bet you could find one in just the size you need from there!
Cari says
Yeah, Dunkin needs to stop with the Frankin’ Coffee. But I did just get candy cane hot cocoa.
I feel you on balance. That’s what today’s walk was about. I just needed to disconnect.
