week 75: school’s out for summer

June 5, 2022      14 Comments

And just like that, school is out and it’s summer vacation. It doesn’t really feel too much like summer because our schedule is crazy packed. Correction: A’s schedule is crazy packed. We are just along for the ride.

Sunday

  • Cardio: 3.88 miles, walking

Oh, Sunday. I was a little emotional this week. Last Sunday of middle school, right?

But we didn’t have time to dwell on that! We had a birthday celebration planned for our friend K at the Secret Tiki Temple! If you are ever in town, make reservations to go. It is the most fun experience ever. Guests must have a password to get in, and from there, it’s just all good times with fun Chinese appetizers and outrageously delicious tiki cocktails.

We let our server choose our drinks, and he nailed it every single time (the menu doesn’t show ingredients, so you just have to trust the process).

Monday

  • Cardio: Memorial Day 5K

I will share my race report this week or next, but I got up to head out to this favorite 5K on my own. It was miserably hot and humid, and while it was not my best time, it was not a personal worst. With how much I’ve been struggling lately, I will take those wins.

The rest of the day was pretty chill. We watched movies at home and grilled burgers and hot dogs for dinner. Nothing fancy.

Tuesday

  • Cardio: 6.32 miles, running + walking

Not much to say. We went. We ran. We walked.

Ok, Ok. Hear me out. We went back to the Secret Tiki Temple with the PTSO. I didn’t plan it that way, but I certainly didn’t mind. My liver did, but it’s not often that I drink a lot of cocktails, so I’ll give myself a pass. We had a beautiful night, celebrating the end of the year.

Wednesday

  • Cardio: 4.16 miles, walking

Was morning hard? Yes. It was. But it was Global Running Day so I had to get up and get moving!

I walked, and then ran a little on the beach. Yay me.

Thanks to Carianne for putting together this amazing collage of all the amazing blogs folks who ran together virtually this day!

Thursday

  • Cardio: 5.92 miles, running + walking

Effort has not been the best, so today, I forced myself to push it. I was proud of my effort, and need to keep it up.

Happy last day of school to A. Here are his first day and last day of 8th grade photos. I can’t believe how much he has matured over just one school year.

We took him to Top Golf and for milkshakes at The Yard to celebrate.

Friday

  • Cardio: 4.72 miles, walking

Happy National Donut Day! You know this is one of my favorite days!

Check out all my favorite donuts here.

After lunch, we went to our friend’s beach rental, and just spent the day chilling with the families. We celebrated the end of school at an awesome oceanfront restaurant and called it a perfect day.

Saturday

  • Cardio: 6.94 miles. running + walking

Another hot solo run. I gritted my teeth and got it done.

My parents had us over for lunch and we spent a lovely afternoon with them. We are so grateful that they are so close.

Goal-getting + Thoughts

Nothing super new or exciting, I guess. While I’m certainly failing at cross training, I am drinking a lot more water than usual. Yay.

We don’t have major plans for the next few months. A is volunteering at karate camp for two weeks, and then has his Scouts camp and band camp. He also has an online course to complete this summer. I’m pondering some local things to do. I feel like I want to start adventuring again 🙂

I am linking up with the Weekly Rundown, with Confessions of A Mother Runner and Running on the Fly! Check them out!

How was your week in training? Do you have any summer plans? Ever been to a tiki bar?

A really did change a lot this year! Middle school is like that. Now he looks like a high schooler!

I’d love a Tiki restaurant like that (but they don’t exist in small-town Iowa). My summer is gonna be pretty low-key, other than a handful of “short” runs but plenty of biking 😉

Always a blast to run with everyone virtually on Global Running Day! I am glad that we all find a way to connect on that day.

Sorry to hear that it was so hot and humid for the Memorial Day 5K 🙁 But it sounds like you had a great rest of the day sending time with family and relaxing.

Yesterday one of the women I ran with did that race over the bridges in Jacksonville that you did! Sounds awesome.

That restaurant does sound fun! I had my first taste of alcohol since that tiramisu dessert my husband got from the supermarket last year at my friend’s hen brunch the other weekend. But I do miss the odd cocktail, I must admit! Well done for getting those runs in – I managed to run four times last week and still miss Global Running Day as usual …

We are supposed to see temps in the 90s this weekend and I am 100% not about it!

I won’t be racing this weekend: instead I’ve got some work, some volunteering, and another event on Sunday. Looking forward to all of it!

This Sunday, I hit up the #womenrunjacksonville ev This Sunday, I hit up the #womenrunjacksonville event at the @theglassfactory, presented by @yelpjacksonville and @market.and.mimosas!

Is it possible to be overwhelmed by so much amazing talent, creativity and awesome woman power?

From the iconic “my phone eats first” tote to the gorgeous party wall lined with craft mimosas, to the silent disco headphones and all the vendors and food/drink samples! Swoon.

I shopped, ate, drank and chatted my way around the venue, and enjoyed every second of it. What a way to celebrate Women’s History Month, and all of the incredible female entrepreneurs, business owners and bosses in Jax and NE Florida!

Five stars. Would do again in a heartbeat!

I am not a huge fan of gym equipment like the treadmill or the elliptical: I find it boring and often times awkward. That being said, I’m working through a training plan from @runsmartofficial and trusting the process.

Did you get your fitness inside or out today? How do you feel about the elliptical?

Let’s talk about balance. Balance is an area wh Let’s talk about balance.

Balance is an area where I sometimes struggle, physically and emotionally. It can be a challenge to fit in all the things I want and all the things I need. I don’t always love doing the mundane or tedious tasks that ultimately lead to the foundations of the things I am more passionate about.

I am taking a little more time to build on the basics, and find my balance. It’s going to lead to a healthier and happier me.

How do you find your balance? Do you struggle with the basics?

Sometimes, the weather is too beautiful not to run Sometimes, the weather is too beautiful not to run.

I worked through some cardio under the blue skies and in the fresh air and then came home to @runsmartofficial’s base building boot camp.

There was A LOT of focus on balance and feet and ankles, as well as ground work in the form of different planks and push-ups.

The movements were small but effective and my legs are certainly burning! It’s going to get harder as we go, but I’m excited to spend more time on my stability and form, to see if it makes me stronger and more efficient over time.

What was on your workout calendar today?

This morning, I started on a new training plan wit This morning, I started on a new training plan with @runsmartofficial. I have a goal race in May, so I am going to see if I can make some improvements along the way.

I can admit that I am built more for distance than speed, but I am taking a crack and improving my pace over the next ten weeks. Keep your fingers crossed 🤞🏻!

Anyone else starting a new training plan and cycle?
