Now that we are really in the throes of summer vacation: let’s stay active! Sure, vacations are fun, and you don’t always need to go quite as hard while enjoying your time, but that doesn’t mean you have to give up all your fitness if you don’t want to! Keep reading for our suggestions on how to keep moving on your travels!

Reserve A Hotel With A Gym
When you reserve your accommodations, look for hotels with great gyms. Some hotels just have the basics, like treadmills, and a few free weights, while others may have the full complement of machines and equipment. You may even find Peloton bikes or similar amenities. Pack your workout clothes and get that heart rate going!

Explore Your Resort
If you’re staying on a large property (like an all-inclusive or a mega-resort), the property itself might provide everything you need by way of walking and running paths. The benefit here is that everything is pretty much self-contained, and safe. You’ve also got the benefit of restrooms and coffee shops in the lobby of the hotel, in case you need a potty break and a caffeinated sweet treat.

Tour Your Destination
New city? That’s a great time to log your miles around town. Not only will you get in your fitness, but you’ll also get to take in all the sights on foot. You can find great routes on your own, via the internet, or even by asking your hotel concierge. Remember to put safety first and let your travel companions know where you are headed, when you’ll be back, and check in from time to time. Don’t forget to take all the photos!

Book Active Tours + Itineraries
If you’d like to keep moving, but in a less formal capacity, consider booking some active tours and itineraries. Think hiking, kayaking, bike tours, horse back riding, snorkeling, paddle boarding, and more. Really, there are no limits! This is another great way to see your destination, and maybe even try something new and different!

Register For A Race
Last, but certainly not least, is the runner’s favorite: register for a local race! It’s a great way to fulfill your fitness goals, and try a new event in a new and different place. I make it a point to register for a race in every new city/state we visit… it doesn’t take some scheduling, but that’s perfectly fine by me!

Great tips, Jenn! Our vacations are almost always very active and planned around workouts we want to do. My husband has been spending hours planning our biking routes and hiking trails for our upcoming road trip! And the first place we check out after checking into a hotel is the gym. I always bring a bag of bands/tubes in case the gym is lacking in strength training equipment.
I usually don’t use the gym, but I like to have it as an option. Sadly, the boys aren’t quite as motivated as me. They prefer to sleep in and take their time in the mornings. I would rather get up and get out and I bring them coffee or meet them for breakfast on my way back to the room.
No big vacations planned for the summer. Work as usual. But there are more hikes, more walks, more races…
All good tips… especially the race one. LOL
Oh I forgot. I do have a short trip to NYC in July and to LI in Aug..
Those trips totally count! You always make so much of those adventures!
I have done all of the above 😉 I am also a believer in just staying in ones hotel room (I’m not a fan of hotel gyms) and doing calisthenics/HIIT or body weight exercises. Of course, I’m always looking for a stairway as well, LOL.
Excellent point! The boys usually spread out way too much to leave space for much, but it’s always an option.
