Becoming a runner does an investment in new supplies, but there are really only a few essential piece of must-have gear for new runners, in my opinion. There are plenty of fancy gadgets and knick knacks that might make things more fun or enhance the experience, but if you are looking to get started as simply (and reasonably) as possible, here’s what we recommend.

Do Not Pass Go Without Properly Fitted Running Shoes
We cannot stress the important of properly fitted running shoes enough. Your feet are the foundation of your success as a runner, and ensuring that they are properly protected and enhanced is vital. Go to your local running store and ask for a gait analysis and fitting. Some shops will have a machine, while others will offer a manual evaluation. The goal is to find a shoe that fits well, and works with your body’s natural movement to create an efficient stride – not only will this keep you moving, but it can also help mitigate injury along the way. As I’ve mentioned, be prepared to spend a minimum of $120 on a pair of running shoes that feels right to you.

Splurge On The Socks
After spending three figures on the right shoes, you might be tempted to just wing it with the socks, but I promise this is not the move. A good pair of running socks will be well worth it. Once again, try a few out until you find the ones that feel best. At the end of the day, you’ll probably want something wicking and seamless, to help prevent blisters and chafing, but the material and cushion-level is personal preference. There are even compression options available to help with blood flow and circulation, if that’s what helps keep your feet and legs happy.

Layer Up With Quality Apparel
You don’t have to spend a fortune on running outfits, but do invest in a few quality pieces to get you started. First off, choose foundation garments like sports bras or underwear (if you so choose) that fit well and provide adequate support. This is for comfort, and to avoid chafing. Then go for a few tops and bottoms that are climate-appropriate, comfortable, and sit well on your body without moving around or riding up. I recommend starting with two sports bras, two tanks, a short sleeve shirt, a long sleeve shirt, two pair of shorts and two pair of tights or capris as the start of your running wardrobe. If you’re in the colder weather, look for great outerwear to keep you warm. Find the things that work best and build from there.

You’ll Need A Way To Track Your Miles
It’s always a great idea to track your pace and distance, but that doesn’t mean you have to lay out a fortune for a high-tech smart watch. You can use what you already have, purchase a base-model Garmin or similar, or even use an app on your phone (like RunKeeper or Strava) to log your work. There’s plenty of time to upgrade when you figure out what data is most valuable to you, and how you want to proceed with tracking your runs and fitness.

Don’t Forget A Good Detergent
This may sound silly, but after you’ve built a good running wardrobe, you’ll want to care for it properly. Our last recommendation for must-have gear is a solid detergent. Spandex and other athletic fabrics break down easily and need TLC in the washing machine. Wash your items on cold, turned inside out, and air dry for best results. Experiment with soaps made for sports gear to help extend the longevity of your clothes, as well as remove odor and bacteria.

Once you have these items, the rest is “gravy.” There are plenty of fun and cute accessories you can add to your running routine, but these are the ones that we consider most important to the cause.

Totally agree these are the essentials!
I love that you pointed out you don’t need a fancy watch right away. It’s easy to get caught up in gear FOMO, but a phone app works just fine to start.
The only thing I’d maybe add: a good anti-chafe stick – not everybody needs one, but it can make a big impact!
I mean, you might WANT a fancy watch right away, but it’s not a need. Some people never get the fancy watch. Running is already so expensive, I would hate for people to feel discouraged because of one more pricey gadget.
I agree that these are at great starting point! I would also suggest a way to carry your phone (especially if you are using an app to track your mileage). Some shorts and sports bras have pockets that can hold a phone but not everyone finds that to be comfortable.
That’s true. I hold mine in my hand more often than not, but it’s a great idea to have something.
Anyone who says that running is a simple sport as far as gear is concerned is lying! 🙂
These are great tips to get started, especially investing in good shoes. Way back when I started running I’m pretty sure I ran in aerobics shoes and a t-shirt.
I remember grabbing a pair of running Nikes off the clearance rack and being like “These are the ones!” And then the calves started aching and I learned that shoes really do make a difference. I think you can get away with less running-specific clothing for a little while, but the shoes and socks are critical.
