Happy Earth Week! While it should always be on our minds, now is such a great time to take a look at the trails, streets, and sidewalks we call home. We don’t have to be perfect environmentalists to make a difference. It helps to just be a little more mindful of the space we take up while we’re out moving. Here’s how I’m trying to keep my habits on the greener side this week!

Give Plogging A Go
If you haven’t tried plogging yet, it’s basically just the fine art of picking up litter while you jog. No, you aren’t going to hit a PR, and yes, you’ll look a little funny stopping to grab a stray bottle, but that’s the fun of it. It’s a great way to leave the path better than you found it, and it feels pretty good to tidy up the neighborhood while you get your miles in. Just bring a small bag and grab some gloves.
Choose Sustainable Gear
We all need gear, but it can be tricky to find items that work for our feet and the planet. I’m a big believer in progress over perfection, so let’s do what we can. Look for brands that are actually trying to reduce their footprint. Jogology is just one company that makes a difference with recycled yarns, eco-friendly packaging, and low-carbon production Small choices when you’re restocking your gear drawer really do add up.

Don’t Toss Those Old Kicks
When a pair of shoes has officially reached the end of its life, don’t just dump them in the trash. There’s a good chance they still have some life left for someone else. I always check with my local running store to see if they’re collecting donations, or you can look into groups like Soles4Souls or Terracycle. It’s an easy way to keep waste out of the landfill and get those shoes to someone who needs them.

Bring the Crew Along
One person making better choices is great, but a group doing it together? That’s how you actually start a movement. Talk to your run group about going cup-free at your next long run, or host a cleanup event where you just hit the trails to pick up trash. You don’t have to change the world overnight, but being the person who starts the conversation is a win.

It’s not complicated to remember that life is about being kind to yourself and the world around you. Let’s be mindful of trying to make choices that make us feel good from the inside out, including taking care of the planet that lets us run.
Which of these are you going to try this week?
