Every September 4th, Jacksonville celebrates 904 Day, a chance to support local businesses, show city pride, and highlight what makes living and moving in Northeast Florida so fun. If you live in the 904 or visit often, you know our running scene is unique. We log miles along ocean stretches, power up massive bridges over the St. Johns River, and finish morning runs at local coffee shops.
Whether you’re lacing up for a quick 9.04k or just want to explore a new spot, here are five ways to celebrate 904 Day on foot.

Do a 904-Themed Challenge Workout
If you want to lean into the numbers for Friday morning’s run, build a route around the iconic area code.
- The 9.04k: Run roughly 5.6 miles through your neighborhood or favorite park trail.
- The 9:04 Pace Challenge: Lock into a steady, comfortable 9.04 per mile pace for an easy aerobic run.
- 904 Fartleks: Do 9 rounds of 40-second surges, followed by easy recovery jogs.
It turns a normal Friday morning workout into something fun without adding crazy training stress.

Conquer The Bridges
You can’t talk about running in Jacksonville without talking about bridge work. The iconic Gate River Run made bridge repeats famous around here, and 904 Day is the perfect excuse to tackle one.
Run the Riverwalk loop along the St. Johns River and hit the Main Street Bridge or the Acosta Bridge. The incline gives you a great strength workout, and the views of the downtown skyline across the water at sunrise make the leg burn worth it. In St. Augustine, the Vilano Bride takes you from the beach to the Ancient City. And don’t forget about the Fuller-Warren Shared Use Path that connects Riverside to San Marco over the river.

Hit The Rail Trails
If you want shade and long, uninterrupted miles, head to the Jacksonville-Baldwin Rail Trail or the Palatka-St. Augustine Trail. Both built on old railway corridors, these trails provide long paved areas that are flat, quiet, and mostly under beautiful trees canopies. They are among the best spots in the area to lock into a long run without dealing with street traffic or constant stoplights. Bonus: they are great for cyclists as well.

Ocean Miles At The Beach
If you prefer salt air and wide-open views, head out to one of the 904’s gorgeous beaches for sunrise miles. Running right at the water’s edge on packed sand gives your ankles and feet a different stability workout than asphalt. Plus, finishing a run right as the sun comes up over the Atlantic ocean is hard to beat. Vilano Beach is my go-to, but there are plenty of options from Neptune Beach down to Butler.

Finish At A Local Coffee Spot
The best way to cap off a 904 Day run is by supporting a local shop right after you stop your watch. Grab an iced honey badger latte, grab breakfast with your running buddies, and hang out celebrating the city. Connecting with your running community and supporting local business is what 904 Day is all about.

Does your city have a similar day of support? If you live in Jax, how are you celebrating the 904?
