Reclaiming my strength is kind of the theme of this week. I decided that March would be my month to make things happen.
Sunday – 3 miles walking + Balance Challenge Day 28
Sundays are really just the laziest days for us. It’s ridiculous. We all slept in a little, and Mr PugRunner joined me for my morning walk. It was nice.
And then the rest of the day was just grocery shopping, lounging, and tv. It’s completely uninspiring, but it’s how our days go.
Monday – 4.69 miles, speedwork/walking + strength training
It was a beautiful morning and I took it back to the bridge for some hill repeats. Getting some Vitamin Sea also helps improve one’s outlook for the day. Living so close to the beach is not a bad thing. Not one bit.
A had a crazy busy school week, and Mr PugRunner is hard at work launching a new website and business venture, so we really had to put our heads down and dig in. I started March with some hardcore strength training.
Tuesday – 5.01 miles, running + .45 miles, walking + strength training
Tuesday is a running day, and this time, I had A and J join me for the miles. It was absolutely wonderful, and I was thrilled. Now, it did rain on us, which was wretched, but we laughed about it and got through the run.
I completed my second day of strength training, and I was exhausted. Like couldn’t keep my eyes open. I chalked it up to the weather.
Wednesday – 4.07 miles, walking + strength training
Off I went for my walk, but my hips and glutes were really aching. Ugh.
Day 3 of my new strength training and I realized that I had made a huge mistake. I hadn’t adjusted my food to allow for the increased activity. Whoops. What a rookie mistake. Sheesh.
The week was surely dragging. A really struggled completing his work, which led to high frustrations all the way around. His mind was surely on other things, but it effects all of us. Ugh.
Thursday – 5.01 miles, running + 1.52 miles, walking
Another morning, another run. The weather has been up, down, and all around.
We finally, blessedly go through the rest of school, and then A had some time for skateboarding. He had to take a little break due to the weather, but is right back at it and doing great. Yay!
And then I had the opportunity to attend a training to learn how to properly use an epi-pen. Fortunately, we don’t need one on in our home, but there may come a time when I am on an outing with someone who does. I feel fairly well prepared, although I have my fingers crossed that I’m never in the situation.
Friday – 2.13 miles, walking + strength training
Even though the boys have been sharing their Fridays, Mr PugRunner wanted a family day before A went off to his “ordeal” for Order of the Arrow. They left the plans up to me, and I asked for a walking tour of street murals and pie.
They accommodated me.
Mixed Fillings was everything I dreamed of and more. We pre-ordered our slices on line, found the building, went through the secret alley, and rang the bell.
The pie was magical. MAGICAL. I went with the Beach, Don’t Kill My Vibe, which was pretty much coconut cream with a layer of chocolate. Delicious.
And then we went home to eat dinner and pack up the car. A had to report to his camp at 6:30, and then head off for 24 hours of silence, a night under the stars, sleeping on just a tarp or groundcloth, a day of arduous labor/cheerful service, and scant rations. We got him situated and made the drive home.
Saturday – 10.01 miles, running + .49 miles, walking
The morning was bleh. There was just enough drizzle to make everything miserable, and my ankle ached from the cold and wet. I gave myself permission to quit after seven miles, but made it to ten.
I handled some errands, and then we went to lunch and took Luna to a local dog boutique to pick out her cake and a gift. No photos because it was so rainy and she is a mess in water.
Then it was home to warm up, and chill out with the series finale of WandaVision. Which was epic.
Goal-getting
The month started really well. I was a little discouraged that I couldn’t keep up with my strength plans, but that’s just me being unreasonable.
This week, I think I have to try something new for speedwork, because near-freezing temps and wind will make the bridge a non-starter. It’s aggravating, but sometimes, we just have to pivot and be flexible.
I love our mural “tour.” There is so much incredible street art in town, and it makes for such an enriching day out.
Monday is International Women’s Day. I plan to celebrate by sending love to some of my favorite ladies, reading some from my book by a female author, and doing mom-things. Kind of like every day, but with a hashtag.
Oh, and on Tuesday, I’m taking over the St. Augustine Moms Instagram account! Be sure to come on over and follow my day there!
I am linking up with the Weekly Rundown, with Confessions of A Mother Runner and Running on the Fly! Check them out!
How was your week in training?
Do you have local street art in your area? Do you ever bite off more than you can chew in the fitness realm?
Kimberly Hatting says
Yeah, strength training can really bite (everywhere) if one does too much too soon. Heck, it still bites my buttocks…and I’ve been doing it, consistently, for over 10 years. It certainly keeps us humble 😉
runswithpugs says
SOOO humble.
Deborah Brooks says
I love my strength training as well-you probably already know that. It took me a while to figure out how to coordinate it all with running. No local street art by me but lots downtown in DC. Hope to get another DC run in soon. way to go this week fitting it all in!
runswithpugs says
It’s going to be a work in progress. I would love to spend some time in DC. A is going to be so disappointed that he doesn’t have an 8th grade trip there this upcoming year.
Beckett @ Birchwood Pie says
Ah yes, this is exactly why I’m so flaky with my hill training. The best hill in town is a bridge and when it’s windy it’s a total no-go. Great job this week Jenn!
runswithpugs says
I almost blew off our bridge once. it was not a good day!
Wendy says
Funny story about the epipen: my youngest son has severe tree nut allergies. We never had to use the epipen until he was about 15 and ingested chocolate that had undeclared hazelnuts. He was having shortness of breath, so I grabbed the epipen and plunged it into his thigh. After a few minutes, he said he didn’t feel better. That’s when I realized I used the trainer!!! I used the real pen and then we went to the ER.
Lesson learned: I tell everyone I train to discard the trainer pen once they’ve practiced with it. When you’re in a high pressure situation, you need to simplify everything to avoid error.
Glad you learned how to use it! It’s no biggie, right? And there’s the Auvi-Q, that talks to you, tells you what to do. When it first came out, I thought it was a gimmick. But then I had my experience with my son…and I’m a medical professional!

THAT’S NOT A FUNNY STORY!!!
We talked about the Auvi-Q, and that sounds great. One of the other attendees said his company is working on a nasal spray to replace the epipen entirely. I’m all in for that.
Jenny says
I’m envious that you live close to the beach- we’re nine miles away which doesn’t sound like a lot, but is enough to make it impractical for a quick trip.
Enjoy your lazy Sundays! You earn them.
runswithpugs says
I do love lazy Sundays, but also getting things done.
Marcia says
I’m coveting your beach time and your beach pie! What a cool, out of the way place! Wish we had more street murals around here too! Bummer it’s still so chilly there again.
runswithpugs says
Beach time and beach pie are five star in my book!
Jessie says
A mural tour is a cool idea! Makes for great pics too 🙂
10 miles- way to go! Sounds like a solid week.
runswithpugs says
It was really fun. I need to check out the next set of walls on the other side of town.
Coco says
I need to do a mural tour around here — I’ve seen some cool ones on IG. I had some work I was avoiding on Sunday so I did extra chores until I couldn’t procrastinate any longer!
How did A’s event go? That does sound challenging, but something to be so proud of when he’s done!
runswithpugs says
I love art, and it’s so great to see it out and about and so accessible.
He was a rockstar! He is now Order of the Arrow, and we are so proud. It was a rough 24 hours, but the sound of his voice, when he called to share about his day was just so excited and proud.
Michelle D. says
Love the idea of a mural tour!
You had another great week – I think it takes a little bit to find the right balance with strength training.
runswithpugs says
It really does. And school stuff has been brutal this week, too, so I have NOT been motivated. Boo on me.
Chocolaterunsjudy says
Biting off more than I can chew in fitness? Who me? Well, not so much lately. But as long as you realize & pivot it’s all good.
Hope A survived!
That pie looks amazing. Even though it’s different, it got me thinking about my fav pue & sitting outside at the restaurant. Not yet though!
The murals are amazing too. There are a few here, but not many, at least not many that I’m aware of.

runswithpugs says
A did great! I’ll share more in this week’s recap, but he’s an Arrowman! Yay!
I can’t wait til you can enjoy an outdoor dining experience, with or without pie.
Kim G says
I think we all need at least one lazy day per week – no better day for that than Sunday. I also use Sundays as my grocery shopping days.
OMG – how cute is that pie place? And the pie looked super yummy too 🙂
runswithpugs says
You are correct! Sunday is a great day for it!
All I want is pie, now and they are closed next week for Spring Break. WAHHHHHH!
Debbie @ Deb Runs says
Great job on your runs and workouts last week! Hope this week is going equally as well!
I just practiced using an epi-pen yesterday at my CPR, AED, and first aid recertification class. It’s good information to have, but like you, I hope to never need to practice it in a real life situation.
runswithpugs says
I can imagine it going very much like Pulp Fiction. I *THINK* I’m decent under pressure, but I’d like to not be tested.
Renée @runlaugheatpie says
You gave yourself a B+ but if I would grade you, you’d still have an A. Strength training done right is tough. I’d say you get a pass the first week to do any tweaks.
and that is the BEST NAME OF A PIE, **EVER**. I’m coming to visit you some day JUST FOR THE SEA, AND THE PIE! Ok, well not true. I’d come for you, but can we have pie at the sea?
just followed the IG account, will check it out as soon as I’m done with the link up!
runswithpugs says
I appreciate that. It was a discouraging week, and it’s nice to think that maybe I am being hard on myself.
Listen, you come anytime you like. And we will have Sea, Pie, and Me!
Thanks for the support!
Lisa @ TechChick Adventures says
The pie place sounds delightful! How fun! Glad you made it through your 10 miles. I was about ready to “phone a friend” and give up on my long run last week. Fingers crossed that doesn’t happen again any time soon!
runswithpugs says
It was the best! I did have a friend join me for half, and that was great, but I was a hurting unit.
Liz Dexter says
I love street art – search for Digbeth street art and you’ll get the stuff that’s a few miles from me, there are tours and everything, my best friend and I have done half a selfguided one. What a STRONG week anyway, well done!
runswithpugs says
Oooh, I will check that out! We have a few routes near me that offer gorgeous installations, so for right now, I’ll just walk myself around to check them out.
Zenaida Arroyo says
Exactly how close do you live to the beach? Truly jealous though.
Years ago we were taught how to use an EpiPen but now I feel like I need another training. Even though I will have kids in my classroom, they won’t be eating there so I don’t have to worry about any food allergies.
Yum on that pie!
runswithpugs says
It’s about a 20 minute drive, so not too bad. I grew up in NJ, where we had The Shore. That was maybe an hour away, and it was an ORDEAL to go. Like youo went and paid for your time, and you lugged coolers, and umbrellas, and changes of clothes an all that. But now, it’s like “oh, hey, it’s pretty, let’s stop at the beach.” And we park literally next to the sand, and plop down with whatever we have or don’t have, and it’s just so low-key and easy.
