Happy Almost Halloween! Who’s ready for this month’s spooky October runfessions?
For this month’s trip to the runfessional, let’s join up with Marcia’s Healthy Slice…
I runfess…
That I bailed on my recent half marathon, with good reason, and I’m not even sorry about it. You can read more here. It ended up all working out, and we had fun, but it would have been nice to have 13.1 under my belt.
I runfess…
That after the bailing, I registered for the DONNA Half Marathon in February. This is a huge and intimidating race, and I have only ever run it in a relay capacity. 2022 marks the 15th anniversary of this event, and I am excited that J will be making this on as her first ever half. We will make a weekend of it and have a great time.
I runfess…
That I bought new shoes. Men’s shoes. I don’t hide the fact that I have bigger feet (size 10.5 in Women’s), and that can make it hard to purchase from our local running store. I was trying to see if another stability shoe worked for me, but the Brooks Adrenaline is clearly “my shoe.” The men’s 9.5 works just as well as the women’s, especially with my Superfeet inserts, and while I wasn’t in love with the color, I wanted to support local.
I runfess…
That I still love going to the beach, but my ankle hasn’t been tolerating the bridge repeats as much. I am working with what my body tells me, and even wandered a bit of my regular route this past week. My reward? Peacocks! They just wander around in certain parts of town, and it was neat to see hem up close and personal.
I runfess…
That I am skipping a Halloween race this year. And I may not even race on Thanksgiving. I used to be super into those events, but we have a lot going on and I just don’t feel like playing with the schedule too much. There are other races I want to run, and I will miss these, but it’s just too much to coordinate. Meh. I bet I will be back to myself next year.
What are you runfessing this month?

Welcome to Team Men’s Shoes! I’ve been a member for years. Maybe someday the shoe manufacturers will catch on and start making pink “men’s” shoes.
On our vacay to Cocoa Beach a few years ago we went out to dinner and there were a ton of peacocks just wandering the streets. That’s not something that we get to see at home. I love seeing them.

They are so pretty but so loud and they smell awful! Apparently, they love raw hamburger meat.
Nike made pink men’s shoes. It would be nice to see some crossover of colors.
Coco says
I really like the color of those shoes — give me all the blue! I feel you on not wanting to deal with race logistics, especially with other family things going. Running is supposed to be a stress reliever, not another source of stress, right?
I hope your ankle is OK — you are smart to adjust your routes and your plans.
runswithpugs says
Yeah, it’s fine. It scared me more than anything else, and I hated feeling so vulnerable.
Deborah Brooks says
Sounds like you made the right decision for you about skipping the race. Nothing to feel guilty about as there are always more races to run and we only have one body to do it with
runswithpugs says
That is absolutely correct!
Jenny says
Wow, wild peacocks- that’s something you don’t see everyday.
I can see how holiday races could be hard to coordinate. It’s not like you don’t run enough other races! Why add stress to an already busy day? Speaking of other races, i’ve heard about that Donna half- it sounds like a great one.
runswithpugs says
It’s a great race! If you ever have a chance to run it, or any part of it, I would recommend it.
Erica @ Erica Finds says
Definitely makes sense to bail on holiday fun runs if the logistics makes them not fun! That’s the point, right?
I love big races – don’t be intimidated. Just pay attention to all of the pre-race info so you’re in the right place at the right time and enjoy the crowd/energy.
runswithpugs says
It’s a huge race for breast cancer, so the vibe cannot be beat! I am familiar with the race and the logistics, so it’s more just getting over the people lol. I’m such an introvert.
Kim G says
That peacock is beautiful! the colors are so vibrant. I would love to see peacocks on a run but I normally just get greeted by crazy squirrels that like to run in front of me, lol.
runswithpugs says
We don’t have a ton of squirrels! I would love to see them!
Marcia says
I don’t blame you one bit for bailing on your half. Nuisances like checkout time have a way of ruining the best-laid plans plus it sounds like the weather was no prize either. Way to listen to your body and enjoy the weekend. Beautiful peacocks!
runswithpugs says
It definitely made the weekend easier!
Michelle D. says
I like the color of those shoes. I’ve often wondered if men’s shoes would accommodate my wider foot better.
It sounds like letting go of some of the local holiday races will give you some breathing space. If running a race cause stress I always say let it go. It’s great that you and J have a big race to look forward to – such a great cause!
runswithpugs says
Try them! I don’t think they’re any wider, but you never know.
I’m still on the fence about Thanksgiving. We will see. I have time to decide.
Janelle @ Run With No Regrets says
I’m glad the Adrenaline in men’s size is working out for you! I haven’t tried looking at mens’ sizes but I am curious since I have a similar shoe size…sometimes I need a little more width!
I hope you have a great time at your half marathon in February!
runswithpugs says
I don’t think these are any wider. I compared the soles of both my men’s and women’s and they seem to be identical. Definitely try them – your mileage may vary!
Wendy says
I’ve considered mens shoes, just because some of the colors are more appealing to me! Glad to hear they worked out well.
Off to read your race recap…
runswithpugs says
Obviously, try them on first but for me, the differences were negligible.
Cari says
Peacocks!
Hugs on the out of sorts. You know I feel you on that.
I find it fascinating that you “only” wear a 10.5. Why? Because I’m like six inches shorter than you and wear a 9. I love the color and yay shopping local
runswithpugs says
That’s so funny! I know so few people who wear larger than an 8.5 women’s in their running shoes!
Chocolaterunsjudy says
I am not sure what Thanksgiving is going to look like for us, but I’m not planning to race.
There was a place in Austin that had peacocks. So cool.
I am short. 5’1”. Yet I wear a size 9 running shoe — big feet! I have, indeed, bought men’s running shoes before.

:hugs:
It’s a great option for women who have the larger sized feet. And even men who have smaller feet!
Kimberly Hatting says
Sorry for the very-delayed comment. My computer has not been letting me access your site (keeps popping up with a trojan warming, and lately it won’t let me bypass that). I was on the road most of Friday and Saturday, and my phone wasn’t playing nice either. Anyways, I used to work in a shoe store, and men’s shoes have a wider width, which seems to suit a lot of lady runners better. Glad you found some that worked for you!! I’d love to stumble upon a peacock while running, they’re so beautiful!
runswithpugs says
That is so bizarre! I’m so sorry that’s happening! My phone won’t let me access anyone’s blogs lately, so I have to do all may commentating when I’m in front of my computer.
