What a year this month has been! I can’t believe how long January felt! Am I the only one?
For this month’s trip to the runfessional, let’s join up with Marcia’s Healthy Slice…
I runfess…
That I am jealous of everyone’s snow. I realize the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence, but it’s hard when it’s cold enough for snow without getting snow.
I runfess…
That the same cold is really doing a number on the toes on my right foot. It takes me some time to get them moving and gripping in the mornings, and when I’m walking outside. Is it frustrating? Heck, yes. I do all kinds of stretches with them, but it’s damaged nerves, and I don’t think I will ever get much improvement.
I runfess…
That I went camping this weekend, and it really got me pumped about Best Damn Race Starkey Park on April 8-10 (remember, we’d love to have you join us – use code RUNSWITHPUGS to save 10% on your entry fee). I was so pumped, in fact, that I ordered a brand new tent for the occasion and I am going to clamp it out like no one has ever seen. We may not be the fastest runners on the relay team, but our campsite will be epic.
I runfess…
That the dreary days make it very hard to get motivated to do anything. I want to wrap up in blankets and stay that way all day. So I’ve made the effort to put to on a complete outfit (no leggings), with makeup and even jewelry, if I’m feeling it or not. Does it help? Eh. The jury is still out.
I runfess…
That I’ve been more on edge this month than any other. It’s probably just current events fatigue, but dang, I’m wrung out. That being said, I’m also feeling moved to be a little louder about some of the issues that are weighing on me: such as the banning of books in our school libraries (like the important classic, “Maus”. I have a staggering TBR list right now, but I’m actually thinking of pausing in order to add more of these banned books to my list (or starting a banned books club?). I’m even pondering the logistics of setting up a banned book exchange for local students. Access to the written word is absolutely vital to education and society and I can’t stand silent while authors are silenced and students are blocked from that access.
Did you have an absurdly long month or was it just me? What are looking forward to in February? What are your soapbox issues?

What??? Books are being banned? I have to confess I don’t know about this (obviously, I’m aware that it’s been an issue historically but wasn’t aware there’s a current issue.). I’ll have to look into it.
Yes, January is a weird month. It’s not cold enough to snow here, but if I lived up where you do I would feel the same way- if it’s going to be that cold, at least have some snow to make it fun!
Ugh on the right foot- I know we have a cold weekend coming up but hopefully after that it will warm up. I’m assuming your foot is better in the warm weather. Hang in there- we’re almost to February!
Marcia says
Ugh, a book ban sounds awful. What is this country coming to? Honestly I’ve been so immersed in work January is flying by for me. Crazy, I know. The next time you envy our pretty snow, think about the -15 degrees that comes along with it. At least it’s too cold here for big snakes! Ha!
Wendy says
The snow is nice and all…but this morning I came home from my power walk and it took me over an hour to warm up. It’s cold!
Pretty bummed about this conservative movement in our country. Why don’t these people want our kids to learn about history? It’s not all pretty, but it’s important. Personally, I was shocked to learn about the Tulsa massacre this year–I never learned about that in school. I am grateful my boys had a better education than I did. And i never thought I’d ever say this, but I’m glad I live in Illinois.

Wow on the banned books…I find that stunning. I’m truly sad and distressed by what I see happening in this country.
I’m with you feeling like January has been the longest month ever. I’m looking forward to putting it in the rearview mirror!

It’s time to say goodbye to the month.
I cant understand being afraid of knowledge. It makes no sense to me.
Cari says
I would totally joined a banned book reading club. MAUS story out of Tennessee frightened me. How are we so afraid of education.
No. Leggings. I’m sorry. What language are you speaking?
runswithpugs says
Hahahah in regards to the leggings.
Should we do a club? I don’t know where I would start!
Kimberly Hatting says
Yeah, what’s up the sun-freezing Florida temps? I wasn’t expecting “totally tropical,” but the frost (amidst the palm trees) just didn’t look right, LOL
runswithpugs says
It’s funny, right? This was a cold year, and it lasted a long, long time. Tonight’s going to be rough.
Darlene says
Don’t be jealous of us. -11 and snow today.
But in February I’ll be in Florida woo hoo! I’m hoping to not have to wear leggings.
runswithpugs says
I hope the weather is lovely for you!

I love snow but from a distance. I don’t want any of that stuff here! sure it’s nice in the beginning but it only leads to muck and mess and people driving like weirdos. we already had to cancel one parkrun just because it iced over and would have been too dangerous. nooooo thanks!
I hear you though on the feet thing. I runfess I take a lot of ibuprofen sometimes before I run (I know, you aren’t supposed to but those who advise do not have my feet). Both big toes are now almost completely frozen (hallux rigidus) and I have nerve damage AND arthritis in my toes. It SUCKS.
my soapbox issue hands down is … shopping Amazon. Yep. I said it. I hate it so much. If I never give Jeff Bezos another penny again in my life it will be too soon. We all agree we should buy and shop locally, yet we are still buying everything at Amazon when it CAN be purchased locally. That guy made even MORE money in a pandemic, treated his employees like poop, COULD HAVE helped several countries with vaccines (and still been a cadrillionaire) but nope, he went into space for fun. I really wish we would all see what we are doing when we buy from Amazon or use their services. (but that’s me. I’ll continue saying it but no one has to change for me. though I would love it if even ONE person would).
Bring on February! Already have plans for Valentine’s???
runswithpugs says
I’m allergic to ibuprofen and anti inflammatories so that’s unlucky.
I would love just one snowfall here. It wouldn’t last but fresh snow is so peaceful.
Chocolaterunsjudy says
I’m glad books weren’t banned when I was growing up. That’s awful.
If you had snow & it actually stayed cold enough to stay around — you wouldn’t like it. Cause FL isn’t equipped to deal with it & then you’d really have a hard time getting out to walk, let alone run!
I live in leggings. Until the summer, when it’s dresses & skirts & I am not the least bit sorry!

No, I remember when it would get slushy and icy and dirty and gross. But I miss those fresh snowfalls. So peaceful.
The book banning is so upsetting. I don’t know what’s happening in this world.
Debbie @ Deb Runs says
“It’s hard when it’s cold enough for snow without getting snow.” I couldn’t agree more, until… we’ve had a couple of pretty snowfalls and then I want Momma N to bring spring weather our way!
runswithpugs says
It’s an absolute insult!
Erica @ Erica Finds says
I’ve heard of some crazy book bans lately – like one about Rosa Parks so white kids don’t feel bad… um. WTF?!
Yes, January was LONG for many reasons.
Here’s to a better February!
Jessie says
You rock with speaking out about the banned books! I cannot believe it. Right on lady! Speak up 🙂
I love your idea of getting ready every day. I try to do my makeup and hair for work, even if I’m in leggings or sweatpants on the bottom, but when I actually get fully dressed, it still feels foreign! And its hard to do in the winter. I’m ready to move somewhere warm 🙂
Zenaida Arroyo says
Haha, don’t be jealous of the snow. It isn’t that nice anyway. It may look “pretty” at first but then it gets freezing cold. Plus the snow makes it hard to drive anywhere. I remember when working from home I liked not having to get ready for work. I wore a nice top with pajama bottoms or jogging pants. After a while I wanted to wear something nicer, do my hair, and wear a little makeup. 🙂 Ugh, the banned books! Why, why, why? So ridiculous!
