I’m normally a positive person, but there are things I hate, especially as a female runner. Let’s talk about it.
Sports Bras
Yes, I understand they are necessary, especially for those of us who are more endowed up top. However, sports bras can be uncomfortable and constricting. Also, I’m not ashamed to admit I’ve gotten stuck in them a time or two, on days of higher perspiration.
Hormones
Listen. I love being a woman, but the hormones can be too much. From menstruation to menopause, hormonal shifts can really mess with the miles. There are days of cramps, bloating, and general blah, brought on by natural cycles, and they are motivation crushers.
My Bladder
I’m going to pat myself on the back a moment, because my bladder is still holding up well for me. Kegels were something I took seriously and it’s paid off. But all that bouncing up and down sure can get uncomfortable from time to time. There are times when I have to take unplanned potty breaks and it’s not my favorite.
Long Hair In Summer
Technically, this goes for everyone, but long hair in the summer is awful, especially in Florida. The combined heat and humidity can leave hair a sweaty, tangled, knotted mess. I’ve had to use half bottles of conditioner to unsnarl my ponytail after a run, and it hasn’t been a good time.
Not Being Able To Run In Peace
I am very resentful that I can’t go for a run without intention and planning. Rather than just heading out, I have to map a route, notify a loved one, stay alert, watch the time, and on and on and on. It’s not right. We just want to run. Leave us alone.

All are very true.
I hate having to look a certain way.
I see men with big guts yet us older women are supposed to work out, eat healthy and stay thin.
I hate that my feet hurt. Do men ever get bunions, neuromas from wearing pretty shoes?
Erica @ Erica Finds says
Strangely, I don’t mind sports bras. Just taking them off when I am sweaty. That’s hard.
That last one for sure. I’m so sick of victim blaming of women. Why can’t we tell men to stop attacking, cat calling and creeping out women instead!?
Jenny says
Yes to Erica’s comment above. It shouldn’t be on us to carry weapons and modify our routes and routines- but unfortunately that’s the reality for now. So sad that we have to think about these things!
Zenaida Arroyo says
Everything you mention is so true. But I will admit the one I agree more is the last one. Women have to be extra careful when going for a run. We shouldn’t have to.

I am nodding vigorously in agreement with you. The sports bra issue – OMG. I keep trying new (and let’s face it, EXPENSIVE) bras that PROMISE maxium support. So when my boobs are moving all over the place what is Maximum Support about this!!?? UGH. And the hormones, especially with menopause for me has meant weight gain REGARDLESS of what I eat or how much I move. And that also means more pain in my joints and just plan harder to run. Sometimes the joy just isn’t there. And Finally, not being able to just go out and run without the thought that we could be attacked, it’s infuriating and depressing at the same time. When will we also stop getting the blame for just doing what we love to do?
