This week was crazy. No two ways about it. From nasty weather to getting temporarily trapped in a parking garage, there were definitely adventures to be had.
Sunday
- Cardio: 3.1 miles, Tunnel 2 Towers 5k
- Strength: Shoulder circuit (3×15 shoulder presses, 3×15 neutral curls, 3×15 upright rows, 3×15 front raises, 3×15 side raises, 3×15 tricep kickbacks, 3×15 shoulder taps), 40 dead bugs
First thing in the morning, we took part in the Tunnel 2 Towers 5K, in honor of 9/11. Mr PugRunner has been wanting to participate in this event, and it never worked out before now. It was an emotional morning, and I ended up sticking with him rather than running ahead.
A was at my parents’, so after we finished the 5K, we dove up to see them and enjoy a late breakfast.
Fromm there, we got cleaned up to celebrate our friend’s daughter’s 18th birthday. It was the best time.
Monday
- Cardio: 3.32 miles, walking, 4.54 miles cycling
- Strength: Bicep circuit (on knees 3×15 supinating curls, 3×15 regular curls, 3×15 hammer curls, 3×15 waiter curls). 45 dead bugs
Since I’m struggling so hard with the running, I thought I might haul out the bike to see how that felt. First I walked (since I ran the day before).
And then I rode.
It was fine. I am hoping to get my legs turning over faster, making strides in running easier. Will that work? Only time will tell.
We had a nice day, even if it was more quiet than usual. We just needed a break.
Tuesday
- Cardio: 3.07 miles, walking + 5.19 miles, cycling
- Strength: Shoulder circuit (3×15 shoulder presses, 3×15 neutral curls, 3×15 upright rows, 3×15 front raises, 3×15 side raises, 3×15 tricep kickbacks, 3×15 shoulder taps), 40 dead bugs
Another day of walking.
And more cycling.
Leonidas went to the vet for surgery. He needed to be fixed, and he also needed a procedure done for this stenotic nares. The vet used a laser to widen his nostrils so he can breathe more easily. It’s something that can occur in brachycephalic dogs, like pugs, but it was our first experience (of seven pugs).
All went well, and when he came home, he acted like nothing had happened. It will be crazy keeping him calm.
Wednesday
- Cardio: 4.52 miles, running + walking
- Strength: Bicep circuit (on knees 3×15 supinating curls, 3×15 regular curls, 3×15 hammer curls, 3×15 waiter curls). 45 dead bugs
I had a bad night. Leonidas was fine, but I was so worried about him sleeping with the cone, or being in pain, that I stayed on the couch and ended up having to keep him with me. As a result, I had a very shabby run and strength circuit. Ugh.
Aside from some errands and getting the kids from school, I had a very quiet day, with a very nice nap.
Thursday
- Cardio: 4.07 miles, walking + 5.38 miles, cycling
I woke up, buzzing with excitement. Maybe it was cooler, but things felt good. I walked and biked.
I had been invited to the media preview of Beyond Van Gogh, and brought Mr PugRunner along with me. It was truly so magical and beautiful. Mr PugRunner was a bit of a skeptic at first, but even he really enjoyed the experience.
Afterwards, we went to a rooftop bars for drinks and munchies. It was a lovely night.
Friday
- Cardio: 5.76 miles, running + walking
- Strength:Bicep circuit (on knees 3×15 supinating curls, 3×15 regular curls, 3×15 hammer curls, 3×15 waiter curls). 45 dead bugs
I was so excited to see J again. She’s been preoccupied with a few things at home so we haven’t been able to have our morning runs.
Funny story. I had another Van Gogh ticket for the opening of the show. I booked it months ago, and planned to view the exhibit and then have lunch with Mr PugRunner. Since we had already seen it, I headed up to the Immersive Art Space alone, and spent a few hours just absorbing it all over again.
Upon leaving, there was a huge line in the parking garage. Apparently, someone had broken one of the automatic gate arms, leadings to a crazy backlog in cars. I was stuck sitting for about 30 minutes. Yikes. It was a little alarming, but I got out eventually. Yay.
Friday Night Lights again. I was really looking forward to a big band performance, but the rain screwed things up. Our team pulled out a huge win, which was fabulous.
Saturday
- Cardio: 3.01 miles, walking
- Strength: Bicep circuit (on knees 3×15 supinating curls, 3×15 regular curls, 3×15 hammer curls, 3×15 waiter curls). 45 dead bugs
Happy Saturday!
I got in a quick walk, then I headed over to the dojo where A was helping with a belt test.
We got him lunch and then took him to his long Saturday band practice.
From there, we went for lunch and to try the new bubble waffle place in town.
That night, we had a meeting regarding our home band show, and the band director invited us to stay to check out practice on the football field (usually, they have to play in the parking lot, but it was so different seeing it on the field).
Goal-getting + Thoughts
I am exhausted. Between the puppy and all the fun events, it’s been bedlam. Which is great, and we are having fun, but I need a nap. I’m proud I’ve been able to re-enter the world of cycling, which takes some of the pressure off me for miles. And I’ve also held on to delight weight lifting at home.
I’m not complaining. Much. I have ZOOMA Amelia Island in my sights. Hotel room is booked so we can spend some time enjoying the area, and we have some VIP perks ready to go. I am maybe getting excited? Mostly?
I am linking up with the Weekly Rundown, with Confessions of A Mother Runner and Running on the Fly! Check them out!
How was your week in training? Have you been to an immersive art experienced? Ever get trapped in a parking garage?
Jessie says
Sounds like an eventful week. I haven’t heard about stenotic nares and plan to read up a bit on it! I’m glad Leo is okay! It’s always hard to keep those pups calm post procedures.
Deborah Brooks says
We had that Van Gogh exhibit last year and it was fun and different. Glad to hear that your pup recovered quickly. Hope you have a less stressful week
Jenny says
Yeah,, running is a struggle this time of year and I blame the heat. I’ve also been on my bike (although not exactly by choice) and it’s a nice change. You definitely had a busy week! It sounds like Leo’s surgery was harder on you than it was on him.
I haven’t seen the Van Gogh exhibit but it looks amazing. That’s cool you got to go twice! Hope this week calms down a little and you get that nap.
Wendy says
I loved the immersive Van Gogh when we saw it in Chicago last year! They also had a yoga class there–I think Erica did it. I would have gone back in a heartbeat to see it again. I think an immersive Monet is coming here next.
Sorry that you are struggling so much with running, but it has to be the heat! Soon, relief will come.
Darlene Cardillo says
I’ve seen the Van Gogh exhibit 3 times… all different and enjoyed each one.
You are motivating me to get out my bike.
Once it gets cooler, I bet your running feels better.
Coco says
Sorry about the rough week. I hope you get to recover and get some rest.
Yikes on getting stuck in the garage! Glad it wasn’t for too long.
I definitely think riding can improve running — glad you are enjoying it.
Kimberly Hatting says
There was talk of the Immersive Van Gogh coming to Des Moines…but it’s all been talk thus far. The daughters and I want to go see it SO BAD. All the cycling! YAY!!!!!
Kim G says
That exhibit looks amazing! I need to see if the immersive event will be coming near where I live.
Happy to hear that Leonidas’ surgery went well and that he is healing.
Liz Dexter says
What a busy week! But what are bubble waffles? Not sure we have them here yet …
Lisa @ TechChick Adventures says
It’s exciting to see a bike in your weekly recap! I hope you enjoy it. I really do love my bike (although my son just took it out tonight and may have hit the rim on a curb. ugh). We have bubble tea, but haven’ t heard of bubble waffles yet! I really hope the weather will work out for your band this week. Those kids deserve to play!!
Melissa says
What a week! But nice job getting in the cardio and weights. I wish I was that consistent!
Michelle says
Wasn’t that Van Gogh immersion fantastic?! I loved it when the show came to Boston.
I’m sorry running has felt like a struggle. Nice to see you getting some time on your bike!

That photo of the band on the field is awesome! I swear between being at my mom & sleeping on the couch at home with sick animals it’s like my second bed. Doesn’t really make it any more comfortable.
I’ve been stuck in a parking garage after a race. Not fun!
I know it’s only September but hopefully you get some cool-er weather. And you have Amelia Island to look forward to!

I hope Leonidas has recovered completely from surgery and has gotten to take his cone off.
How cool to get to experience the Van Gogh exhibit twice!
