You heard it here: my baby is starting his sophomore year of high school! And it’s going to be a fun and exciting year for sure!
Sunday
- Cardio: 3.82 miles, walking
Oh, those late nights were starting to me in. I went to bed after midnight, continuing with my dog sitting job. But after I took care of her in the morning, it was off for some hot miles.
From there, it was just a regular day, catching up with laundry and things around the house.
Monday
- Cardio: 7.12 miles, running + walking
As I have mentioned, it’s hot and humid AF here. Every morning, we get an excessive heat and humidity warning, and it’s just not safe to push too hard. Is it terrible? You know it. But we do what we can.
Tuesday
- Cardio: 5.2 miles, walking
I got out and got walking, as one does.
And then I dug into a bunch of prep work for the school’s arts boosters. We have a new president this year, and some new band leadership, so we are hitting the ground running.
Wednesday
- Cardio: 6.03 miles, walking
No solid running happening today. Sigh.
But it WAS Meet The Teacher Day! So we all started moving in that direction. It was a good morning – A met everyone but his biology teacher (who is a new hire and was being onboarded). He’s got a great schedule with two band classes and American Sign Language as highlights. He’s also thrilled with his lunch period.
My plan was to take him to Target to pick up supplies (we wait to meet the teachers to see what they actually recommend) and then to lunch. To my shock, he really didn’t want much, and told me that he still has plenty of paper, pencils, and even binders from last year that will serve. So we walked out with some pens, one spiral notebook, a new binder for wind ensemble, a compass/protractor for geometry and a 6pack of black socks, and lunch snacks.
Then we snagged some taco and off he went to band practice. When I picked him up, we headed to the local frozen custard place for a fundraiser. It seemed like the whole band showed up for it so it should be fairly profitable.
Thursday
- Cardio: 4.10 miles, walking
Happy Back To School Day!
I was able to get in a walk before carpool.
And then, off he went. We are absolutely not going to talk about sweatshirts on days that reach 100F.
I scrambled to get myself ready and then skipped off to breakfast with this dear friend. We vowed to not let it be so long in between visits going forward.
Our scheduling leaves me as the pickup driver most days of the week, so I snagged the kids from school, dropped A at work, brought his friend home, and went about the rest of the evening.
Friday
- Cardio: 7.04 miles, running + walking
It felt just a touch cooler and I tried to run, but my hip wasn’t having it. I got a few miles but just switched to walking. Boo.
Then it was all the meetings. Good times. I’m moving forward with some big projects, so it was a productive day and gave me the motivation to get tons accomplished this weekend.
Saturday
- Cardio: 5.12 miles, walking
Happy weekend! Yay for Saturday!
I slept in and was “rewarded” with another gross walk.
Then I dug in to do all the things. Tons of laundry. Tons of content batching. Tons of blogging. Ok, maybe not tons, but some.
Thoughts + Goals
This was a busy week, but not a great week for running. It’s really just too hot, and I don’t need to get hurt by pushing too hard or too much.
That being said, I’m glad to have some semblance of structure and routine back in our days. I do better that way.
I am looking forward to this upcoming week. I’ve got hope it will cool down a little. And I’m going to a farm sanctuary, a concert, and the band will play at the home opener football game. Exciting times ahead!
How’s your weather? Anything exciting going on this week?

Yes, my daughter started school and wore a sweatshirt as well! I guess it must be cold in the school??? We also have some fun stuff coming up this week- a band potluck and preview of the marching band (our first football game isn’t till September.)
I KNOW. The heat is horrible, and every day there’s a warning which I just ignore. I mean- I don’t need to be alerted that it’s hot AF. Again. I think being on a schedule again will help everything though.

What a busy week! Well done for being sensible in the heat. I can’t believe we had the heatwave last year: this year it’s been cool and rainy most days.

Congrats on back to school and a successful but busy week! We start in a week and a half and I’m not looking forward to the hustle/bustle and busy-ness, but my daughter is excited ot start kindergarten and be at school with her big brother. Luckily we haven’t hda too much bad heat — but I’d trade that for the ice/cold in the winter for sure!

Our temps were somewhat cooler this week, but the humidity held on, LOL. It is what it is, and (as I always say), I’ll take the summer heat over the frigid winter temps. I hope the new school year goes well!

I used to get really excited about the back 2 school shopping. MY son would also say he didn’t need much. My daughter, on the other hand, needed just about everything she saw in color coordinating packs. Ha! Hope your son has a fab school year and you do too
Marcia says
I honestly don’t know how you even try to run in that heat. A walk those temps is a huge win in my book! Haha! All the best with sophomore year! I swear it goes faster and faster!
Susanne says
Don’t underestimate walking! Of course I’m biased, but still. Well done getting all your walking done and getting out each day despite being busy, and having the too hot for your liking weather. Hope you can do some more running later.
I would also debate wearing a sweatshirt for that kind of weather!
Here it’s cloudy and dull with not-so-summery temperatures. But it could be worse and it might get warmer soon.

It feels weird not having anyone starting school this fall! Yesterday I moved my youngest from his college apartment in Madison to his new apartment in his brother’s 2 flat. I’m excited to have them together but wow! it’s bittersweet. These transitions have always been tough for me. I’m glad they are both close by!

You’ll still be busy but they grow up so fast. And then you’ll be an empty nester which has lots of benefits at least for the runner.
You’ve had such a hot summer… hope things cool down a bit for you.

Here’s to a great sophomore year for A. It’s awesome that he’s got such a good schedule.
Last week’s weather at the farm was delightful (low to mid 60’s each morning). Yesterday, though, the heat index was 105° when we finished our bike ride in Charlotte, NC. That hit me hard!

I get so tired just reading your posts. The heat! All the activity! All the jobs. No idea how you do it. August has actually had some fun things in it for me. It’s been forever since that happened!
