This is truly the week of getting it all done. I’ve been incredibly overwhelmed with my own thoughts, and clearing things off my plate, but that’s ok. The more I get done right now is less I have to do next week, so I’ll take it.
Sunday
- Cardio: 4.76 miles, walking
Has the weather been more tolerable? Yes, 100%. In fact, it almost felt like fall. Almost.
We opted for a chill day. I had lots of stuff to catch up on, so it worked out well.
Monday
- Cardio: 6.21 miles, walking
- Strength: upper body + abs, 30 minutes
Good morning! I walked on my own and with J.
And then I took myself to the Y. I had zero plans, but I opted for some free weights in an out of the way corner. It was a nice, little workout, and of course, I treated myself to Starbucks after, as a reward.
That evening, Mr. PugRunner and I went to dinner, followed by Yelp Event at Wildcrafters sober bar. They feature kava and alcohol alternatives. The space is so pretty and the drinks unique and beautiful.
Tuesday:
- Cardio: 3.15 miles, walking
- Strength: Mobility + Flexibility Class, 60 minutes
I didn’t sleep well so my walk was late and shorter than I prefer.
Then I zipped back to the Y for an hour long mobility and flexibility class. It was a little like yoga, but with less of a flow and fewer moves. The only thing I didn’t love was the downward dog portion, but I was able to manage everything else. The last 20 minutes of class was devoted to foam rolling. I hated it, but it was so good.
On my way out, I scheduled a consultation with the personal trainer. Members get three sessions with the PT to set up a training plan, so I decided to take advantage.
Wednesday
- Cardio: 6.28 miles, walking
Yay, Wednesday. Look at me, putting all that balance to good use.
I skipped the Y in lieu of coffee with a friend, to discuss music school requirements. Crazily enough, these are things now on my radar. The rest of the day was just work. A migraine moved in around 7PM, and I took myself to bed shortly after.
Thursday
- Cardio: 3.66 miles
Mr PugRunner suggested I stay in bed, so I did. There was some thunder, so it just made sense. The headache was mostly gone, and the extra horizontal time did the trick. I did a quick late morning walk.
Then I took myself to the dentist. Ugh. It was another panic-filled visit. They are always so kind, and I got a clean bill of dental health, but it’s awful all the same.
Friday
- Cardio: 5.05 miles, running + walking
Strength: Consult, 30 minutes
So I tried a little running this morning, and I think by Monday, Couch to 5K can resume. Again. And then I met with out of the PT’s at the Y.
We reviewed my health history and my goals, and he took me through five different machines to gauge my “strength.” The good news is that I was able to lift more than I thought. From there, he got me started with an app that will customize a plan to how many days I want to go to the gym, how much time I want to be there, and what workouts I would like to do (free weights vs. dumbbells vs. body weight, etc). I plan to start the regime on Monday, and check back in with him in two weeks.
Then work, and all the laundry, with the Homecoming game at night.
Of course, the band was the main event.
Saturday
- Cardio: 1.41 miles, walking
Confession: my streak almost ended today. I was just so tired after the whole week and I didn’t want to get up. Finally, I dragged myself out of bed and forced myself to head out for at least a mile.
And then the day really began. A and I both had work at the dojo. When we wrapped up there, Mr PugRunner took him to get his hair cut and I cleaned the house before meeting up with some of the boosters to decorate at a pre-dance spirit night. The guys had dinner and then went off to the dance.
Thoughts + Goals
So not a super productive week, fitness-wise. However, on Monday, I am back to Couch to 5K AND my new YMCA workouts. I’m feeling very positive about those things. I’m skipping September races, but I feel good to add an October one.
Moving forward, every day!

What a wonderful week! Glad its almost feeling like fall 🙂 Those drinks look really delicious! You get to do some cool events through Yelp, thanks for sharing!

They were so fun! I have a wine tasting tonight, which makes me happy.
Deborah Brooks says
I am glad your weather is cooling too! Way to get in that flexibility class too. I think you will end up using your gym membership a lot! Have a great week!

Now that I’ve started, I agree with you. And where I thought I would go to the classes more, maybe not. I am enjoying using the machines. I think I’m still too intimidated to enter the free weights sphere, but maybe one day.
Jenny says
Actually I think your week was VERY productive- you got started at the Y with a trainer who set you up with a program! That’s huge. Getting started can be the hardest part sometimes.
Well, once again I’m envious. We did NOT have fall-like weather down here. Being that much farther north really makes a difference this time of year. But I’m glad you were able to get out and enjoy it. Yay for running!
By “music school” do you mean college? Is that what A is thinking of? Remember my son is majoring in music so if you have any questions, let me know.

It feels good to be on a path.
I do mean college, and I would love to chat! I got some really great feedback from my friend, but I am just so out of my league! Thank you for the offer. It’s very appreciated!
Liz Dexter says
Glad the personal trainer had some good ideas for you. And glad the weather is cooling. We’re in autumn here although still some sunny days thank goodness as I’m confined to the house with Covid so I’ve been able to sit in the garden a bit at least.
runswithpugs says
Oh, no! I’m sorry you’re sick! It’s back to warm and raining here, so the fall was short-lived. Feel better soon!
San says
This sounds like a great week. I would totally have taken advantage of access to a PT, too. It sounds like he was able to put you on a path for success.
runswithpugs says
It’s a really nice membership benefit, in my opinion. Even if I do nothing with them beyond the three visits, at least I am in a solid routine.
Wendy says
I’m glad to hear you are feeling more positive! Sometimes having a plan is all it takes. We have a PT at our gym and it feels like I’m always taking advantage of her, lol. I guess I require a lot of maintenance.
Have a great week!

I *almost* had to ask for help today, but there are videos of the workouts on the app, so I just watched and pieced it all together. I’m a visual learner, so that’s a huge bonus for me.
Kimberly Hatting says
That’s great that you met with the PT. They’re a great resource if you have any questions or concerns, and they’ll save you the trouble of knowing where to start. Good luck!
runswithpugs says
The whole program between the PT and the app are pretty cohesive and easy to follow. So far, the most challenging thing to navigate is the gym parking lot!
Marcia says
Hooray for resuming couch to 5k and for your new regime at the Y! Hope A had a blast at HOCO!
runswithpugs says
He did! I’m so glad, too!
Debbie says
It’s great that you met with a personal trainer at the Y. My advice is to go regularly between now and the next time you meet with him in case you have questions about what you’ve done on your own.
runswithpugs says
Absolutely! I committed to four days a week, so that should be 8 visits at least, before I see them again.
Lisa @ TechChick Adventures says
Sounds like you got a lot of planning done – on the college side and fitness wise! Glad you are taking advantage of the training sessions. Interesting that you went to the sober bar. One just opened in our town and I’m afraid it’s not getting a very good reception. It is a very interesting concept!
Very cool that your son is up on that platform – did he have a solo?

That’s so interesting. I think we have three sober bars here and lots of kava bars. I think we are in this weird era where people are using alcohol to cope more and are looking for other ways to socialize. I love that there are options for that. It’s not my to-go, for sure, but I don’t tend to drink heavily regardless.
Chocolaterunsjudy says
Aside from the migraine (sorry), it sounds like a good week. I’m betting joining the Y will really be helpful!
Hopefully you had a fun nice easy runs this week.
Hooray for almost Fall weather!

I think it was just from the weather. Not my favorite thing.
It’s been a good week, for sure.
