We just spent some family vacation time in Chattanooga, and I can’t let time pass without talking about running in a new city. While I did get most of my miles by hiking and exploring, I did have two dedicated runs in the city.
Let’s Talk “Runnability”
We were pleased to find Chattanooga a very runnable and walkable city. Our hotel was in the heart of downtown, a few blocks from the Creative Discovery Museum and the Tennessee Aquarium. We were also a straight shot to the Market Street Bridge and the Riverwalk. In the opposite directions were blocks and blocks of retails shops and restaurants. To be honest, the only reason we personally didn’t walk more was because of the heat.
So About The Weather…
Chattanooga was just as hot as Florida, but without the humidity. What can you do? We would have done so much more on foot if the sun wasn’t threatening to melt us at every turn. But we’re used to that kind of thing, so it wasn’t a deterrent for our race or for the miles I logged on my own.
How About The Altitude And The Terrain?
You all now that Florida sits just slightly above sea level. My house is literally eight feet above. Chattanooga is about 676 feet over sea level, which is a marked difference. Additionally, there are plenty of big hills and bridges that we just don’t have by me. It was a nice change for sure. The hills weren’t easy to navigate, but when something is new, it’s more exciting. And I have to point out that the area is surrounded by mountains if you want to hit the trails. I didn’t have a chance this time, but it would be fun!
Is Chattanooga Set Up For Runners?
You know it is! For one thing, we didn’t experience much in the line of vehicular traffic, meaning there wasn’t a lot of stopping at traffic lights and intersections. Runners can stay in the downtown area, or head over the Tennessee River to the North Side and Coolidge Park. If you stay on the South side, runners have access to the Riverwalk, which is a 16.1 mile paved trail along the banks of the river itself. Perfect.
Sharing Points Of Interest
Urban running is always very appealing to me. I love the blend of architecture, public art, parks, green spaces, and everything in between.
But there are also smaller bits of art around the city.
Have you ever run in Chattanooga? Do you like running on vacation?

I’ve never been to Chattanooga but it sounds like a fun place to visit and run in. I love exploring new cities while running. It’s nice that it’s less humid than Florida. I would have thought that it would be quite humid there.

I thought it would be humid too, but maybe being on the river helped? It was great.

I’ve never been to Chattanooga- it sounds like a great place to run! Sometimes if you stay right downtown a city really isn’t runnable- but it looks like there were some beautiful places to run here. I”ll bet there are some amazing trails too!

I usually find downtowns more runnable. It’s the heart of the action and for me, that feels safe. Things get questionable on the outskirts, in my experience. This was perfect for my urban running love.
There were tons of trails – I just didn’t feel like driving to them. Maybe next time!
