We are now in the thick of hurricane season in Florida, so running through raindrops is a more common thing. I’ve often spoken on my hatred of the rain running, and it’s not getting any better. Some people really love rain running, but for me, it’s just not the way.
Soggy Shoes Are The Worst
I hate running in wet shoes and rainy days pretty much insure soggy footwear. Yuck. Wet shoes are sloshy and squishy, and can also lead to blisters and other unappealing conditions (trench foot, anyone?) Plus, they take forever to dry (yes, you can stuff them with newspaper, but still), and they never feel quite the same afterwards. I’ll pass.
Chafing Is A Problem
Even with anti-chafing products, wet clothes and sweat can lead to chafing. That’s one of my least favorite things to experience as a runner. It’s bad enough to deal with perspiration, but adding precipitation takes it to the next level. No, thanks.
Humidity Makes Everything Steamy
I know people say that rain helps cool things down, but when you combine it with heat and humidity, it becomes sauna-like. That’s just not pleasant to be in, and so I prefer the rain stay away.
Safety Is An Issue
Safety first is an important rule, and rainstorms, especially the ones that comes with hurricanes and tropical storms, can bring their share of damage and danger. We are always on the lookout for lightning, flooding, and standing water. Swollen rivers and canals can bring bugs and snakes, and deep puddles can hide downed power lines, and debris. While this isn’t the norm, it is something to be on the watch for.

I don’t mind running in a light rain, but often times when it’s raining I’ll use the treadmill. It’s just easier. When it’s really hot out and I am already running a little rain feels good!

When it’s warm I don’t mind rain at all but not pouring rain and not when it’s cold.
