As 2024 draws to an end, it’s time to consider setting goals for 2025. Whether you go all in on resolutions or prefer to position some guidelines or guardrails for the new year, we only have a week to get them in place!
Identify Goals That Excite You
The most effective goals to choose are the ones that make your heart go pitter pat. It’s so important to be excited about the journey – that’s what will keep your motivation going through the duration of achieving your goals for 2025! If you don’t have the slightest desire to run 26.2 miles, don’t set “run a marathon” as your New Year’s resolution! Pick things that bring you joy and don’t look back!
Select Goals That Fit The SMART Criteria
The most effective goals to set are those that follow the SMART framework. Goals should be Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, and Time-Bound. Objectives that meet these terms are clear and actionable, which leads to a much higher percentage of success. I always support giving yourself as many helpful tools as possible, so this is a great way to go about setting your goals for 2025.
Adapt And Be Flexible
Unexpected challenges don’t need to derail you from your goals for 2025. If you come up against some surprises that threaten to get in your way, it’s ok to rework things and keep going. Injuries, loss of motivation, or schedule changes are unwelcome, but not the end of your objectives. Switch gears, fix your ponytail and keep going!
Track Your Progress and Celebrate Your Accomplishments
I am a firm believer in the “Treat Yo’self” mindset. When you accomplish something, it’s important to recognize and reward that achievement! Whatever your goals may be, check in on your progress regularly and get ready to celebrate the moment where you hit your target!

Being flexible is key… you never know what the challenges the new year will bring…
I like that you said Celebrate your accomplishments. Too many runners (including myself) focus on that we are too slow and don’t run as much or don’t work out). We all do what we can.

Just speaking for myself, but it can’t all be about pace. There are so many amazing experiences I’ve had while running. Sure, I wish I was faster, but sometimes it’s the journey, right?

I need to use some of these tips for my goals.
