I’m an absolute lover of race photos. I don’t often have someone who can snap pictures of me at the finish line, or along cool courses, so when a race does offer images for sale, I’m all over it. For me, it’s a great way to capture memories of big running moments, and I love to have those pictures to remind myself of the cool and hard things I’ve accomplished. How to fall on the topic of purchasing race photos?

Race Photos Are Expensive…
Depending on the photographer or company, race photos can be as much as $50 for a digital image. For people who race often, that might be a completely unreasonable expense. It’s also unnecessary for those who don’t put much stock in photos or images.

But…
Photographers are often out in the elements for hours, sometimes in very uncomfortable positions. They work hard and deserve to be compensated for that work. It’s ok if that cost is out of your budget, but a lot of time, effort and money goes into those images. When you consider the cost of equipment, hosting, backups, and software (editing and recognition), it makes a little more sense.

Action Photos Can Be Unflattering…
Sometimes, the way a moving body lands leads to all sorts of really unattractive photos. There are plenty of times I click the link to my race photos and immediately close it back down, because I don’t want to reminded of cellulite, rolls, or gasping for air. We’ve all been there.

But…
Sometimes they are just magical. With a little luck and great timing, the photographers catch us in moments of strength, power, and victory. And that’s worth having.

Who Needs Another Running Photo?
If you’re anything like me, you have tons of running photos saved up. They are either of yourself or the surrounding scenery, and they are great. Really.

But…
Sometimes you’re running in a completely gorgeous or unique location, and races position their photographers to catch those iconic scenes. Maybe it’s not a big deal at your local 5K in a residential neighborhood, but when you’re running through the castle at Magic Kingdom, or you’re on a speedway, or some other super cool setting… it’s nice to have the remembrance.

I Can Just Take A Selfie:
Most runners, especially those on social media, are adept at selfies. And that’s a super great option… if you don’t mind stopping during a race, or even fumbling around with your phone while you’re focusing on your race plan.

But…
Course photographers can capture you in the moment and preserve those memories for you without any effort on your part. That way, you can still access incredible images, and focus on the race you’re in.

Pro Tip: Some Races Offer Free Photos!
Sometimes, races will offer free photos to runners! This is an awesome amenity and I love to see it. Best Damn Race is one race group that proudly offers photography services to their athletes. The photos are run through bib/facial recognition software and watermarked with the event name, city, and date. Local races may put a few amateur photographers at their finish line or along the course, and then upload those images to the race Facebook page afterwards. These are great, although runners usually do have to do some digging to find themselves. However, it’s a great way to get complimentary photos!
