Rest days: love them or hate them? In the running community, the concept of rest days is a bit of a controversial subject. Some people do believe that taking a break, no matter how small, is detrimental to training and interrupts the momentum, but that’s not the truth. Rest days are essential to your running journey.

Rest Days Offer The Chance To Recover
Running is demanding, and your body needs time to heal from that stress. Rest days allow muscles to repair, joints to decompress, and energy levels to return. Recovery isn’t a luxury—it’s where the real progress happens.

Rest Days Help Prevent Injury
Repetition takes a toll. When you stress the same muscles and joints day after day, you increase your risk of overuse injuries. Building regular rest into your schedule gives your body the space it needs to adapt without breaking down.

Taking Rest Days Lets You Reset
Rest isn’t just physical—it’s mental. A pause can give you back the excitement and motivation that daily training sometimes wears thin. Coming back fresh makes the next run feel that much better.

Rest Days Can Lead To Improved Performance
Contrary to the “no days off” mindset, rest can make you stronger. Muscles rebuild during recovery, not while you’re pounding the pavement. When you return, you may find yourself running faster, with more power and efficiency.

Rest Days Lead To Better Balance
Running is a big part of life—but it’s not the only part. Rest days make room for family, friends, hobbies, and downtime. That balance helps you avoid burnout and keeps running something you want to do, not something you have to do.

Rest days aren’t a setback—they’re part of the process. Think of them as strategic tools that help you recover, reset, and come back stronger. So the next time your plan calls for a day off, take it! Your body (and your running) will thank you.

I do take rest days. I only run 3 or 4 times a week.
For all the reasons you mention.
And if you work full-time, it’s less stressful trying to fit in your runs.
Sounds perfect to me!
