I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: there’s just something about running in fall. The crisp morning air, the crunch of leaves under your shoes, and best of all, the neighborhood decor. People go all out with skeletons, pumpkins, and spooky displays, turning ordinary running routes into haunted landscapes.
Instead of just cruising past the decorations this year, why not turn your miles into a game? A spooky season running scavenger hunt is one of the easiest ways to spice up a solo run, add some motivation to a long workout, or bring a little extra fun to a group run with friends.
Here are three different scavenger hunt formats to try this October, ranging from a quick neighborhood jog to a full-blown competitive challenge.

Scavenger Hunt 1: The Neighborhood Halloween Classics
This list is perfect for a casual neighborhood run or a family-friendly jog. See how many of these classic Halloween sights you can spot within a three-mile radius.
- A giant inflatable spider or pumpkin taller than a front porch
- A skeleton in a funny or unexpected pose (bonus points if it’s dressed in sports gear!)
- A house with orange and purple string lights turned on
- A porch guarded by at least three carved jack-o’-lanterns
- A front door completely covered in faux cobwebs
- A tombstone graveyard display on a front lawn
- A ghost hanging from a tree branch blowing in the wind

Scavenger Hunt 2: The Spooky Runner’s Bingo
If you want something a bit more interactive for a group run, screenshot or print this list and see who can complete a “line” first on their route. Take a screenshot or print a copy of this bingo card and see how quickly you can hit BINGO!
Scavenger Hunt 3: The Hardcore Photo Challenge
Want to up the ante? Challenge your running buddies to a photo-proof scavenger hunt. The goal is to snap a selfie in front of as many items as possible during your run without stopping your running watch! Use the suggestions below or save the graphic for a scoredcard!
- Selfie with a skeleton that looks like it’s trying to run with you
- A photo with the creepiest or most detailed lawn display on your route
- A snapshot of a house that went all out with a specific theme (Pirates, Monsters, or Classic Movies)
- A photo in front of a pumpkin patch or local farm stand along your route
- A quick selfie with a pumpkin that has a genuine runner’s grimace on its face
How To Play + Tips For Safety
Before you dash off in search of lawn ghouls, keep a few quick tips in mind:
- Stay visible: If you’re running at dusk or early in the morning to see lit-up displays, wear reflective gear and bring a high-visibility light.
- Watch your footing: It is easy to get distracted looking at cool decorations on lawns. Keep an eye on sidewalk cracks and uneven pavement.
- Respect private property: Keep all photos on public sidewalks or trail paths.

Running should be fun, and seasonal games like a scavenger hunt are a great reminder not to take every mile so seriously. Gather a group, head out solo with a mission, or use this list to keep your mind occupied during those final miles of a long run.
