Today marks National Teacher Appreciation Day.
Our school happens to celebrate the entire week, which is ok by me, because we absolutely adore little man’s teachers and love to do special things for them. I also love that the school provides themes for each day. Sometimes, it’s hard to get inspired, so a little push in the right direction can be helpful for me.
I will be posting these ideas on a day delay, just so that I don’t let the cat out of the bag for the recipients of these gifts.
Monday’s theme suggestion was to bring a store bought or homemade card. Cards, of any variety, are really not my forte, so I had little man write “Thank you, Mrs. X” on separate pieces of card stock for each teacher and then he drew pictures for each of them (one got Iron Man, the other got flowers and pepperoni pizza).
To add to his artistic stylings, we made these adorable apple cores out of wooden spools (inspired by Fiskars). We did a similar project last year and they were a hit. Little man helped me paint two wooden spools, red and green, while I printed out two quotes about great teachers on white card stock.
I used scalloped scissors to cut the quotes to slightly smaller than the width of the spool, as shown.
I made a vertical stripe of hot glue down the side of the spool to secure each quote to the “core” (text facing inwards). While that dried, I cut “seeds” out of black card stock and glued them to the blank side.
To create the stem, I rolled a 1/2″ wide piece of brown cardstock and secured it in the hole at the top of the spool with a dot of hot glue. I rolled the paper tightly around the spool and secured it in place with a pretty ribbon.
We packaged the “apples” in cellophane bags, attached little man’s cards to the bags, and he had some sweet cards to give his teachers.
Thanks to little man’s teachers (and to all teachers) for helping to inspire him. It is appreciated more than words can say.
