why runners should carry phones

August 18, 2021      8 Comments

The question of why runners should carry phones is a debated one. After all, running is a great way to disconnect, and phones can truly be an electronic leash. But there are plenty of reasons to carry your phone, too. Let’s take a look.

Carry Your Phone For The GPS Feature

Today’s smart phones are equipped with lots of great maps and GPS features, so having your phone handy makes it hard to get lost. You can also use the maps app to drop a pin to share your location with family or friends.

Carry Your Phone For Good Listening

Whether you prefer music or podcasts, having you phone with you gives you access to some great listening material.

Carry Your Phone For That Perfect Photo

I love a good photo, so having my phone handy means I’m always ready for a great sunrise or perfect runfie. With my phone in hand, I never come up short.

Carry Your Phone In Case Of Emergency

It’s always a good idea to have you phone on your person in case of emergency. If you have a medical emergency, or you witness an accident, or you need help, your phone is going to be your lifeline to help. Safety first, I always say.

Carry Your Phone For Evidence

Let’s say you DO witness an accident or emergency on your run. If you have a phone handy, you can snap photos of the scenes, or a license plate, or even of a suspect (if it feels safe to do so).

Carry Your Phone For Tracking Your Run

Probably the most obvious reason to carry your phone is to track your run. Most of us have some kind of running or smart watch, but there are so many great running apps on you phone that can come in handy while logging your miles.

Very good points, Jenn, especially the one about emergencies.

I am so lazy about taking my phone along… if my husband’s not with me, I usually don’t have one.
I always regret it when I see something great to photograph and I don’t have it with me! But I’ll regret it even more if there’s an emergency and I urgently need a phone. Thanks for the reminder!

I always carry my phone when I run, but I don’t look at it unless I need it. I’ll usually stop once for a picture and on long runs I use my phone to listen to podcasts. I feel much safer having it with me.

I always carry my phone when I run for safety, for music (if I’m on the road), and for photos!

I always carry my phone for safety and emergency. Never know when you could get injured. Also, never hurts for that selfie. I have my GPS on my watch.

I always have my phone with me as well. It’s a given that an emergency could arise at any time or place (not just the runner, but family/friends who may need to contact the runner). And the selfies are crucial 🙂

I do always carry my phone. Mostly for picture taking & safety. What did runners do in the olden days, LOL?

I always carry my phone, both for safety and just in case my husband needs to get a hold of me. Once I forgot my phone on a run and was so nervous not having it.

In flight? You know it! I’m adjusting my schedu In flight? You know it!

I’m adjusting my schedule a little bit. Right now, I just can’t get up as early as I would like, but that’s ok. Things can be shuffled and rearranged.

Additionally, I rescued a big dog this morning with another neighbor. I heard galloping behind me as I was heading home and was almost tackled by a huge doodle-type. Between us, we were able to call the microchip service and get his address and she went to notify the owner. He wasn’t a good walker and he even knocked me down (very slowly and dramatically) while I held him and waited. He is home safe and sound and I’m wondering how many people carry leashes with them on the run just in case this happens. This is my second rescue in a few weeks. It’s becoming a thing.

Any plans this weekend? Any dog rescues while running?

Baby, it’s cold 🥶 outside! Peep that frost! Baby, it’s cold 🥶 outside!

Peep that frost!

Solid five miles this morning. I just started the strength training plan I won from @kimrunsthemitten so I was a little sore but I think the frosty air was good for my muscles.

It’s promising to be a pretty day so fingers crossed for more outdoors time!

How are you honoring this day?

It’s a beautiful weekend for the #staugfilmfest! It’s a beautiful weekend for the #staugfilmfest! We saw @tiger24film, presented by @staugalligatorfarm at the Lewis Auditorium, and it was truly an incredible and thought provoking documentary on the tenuous balance between wild animals in their natural habitat, humans, and the consequences that occur when the two come together.

There is still plenty of time to check out screenings at three locations this afternoon and evening! Visit https://www.staugfilmfest.com for ticket details!
