I know it’s silly to think about the idea of a winter storm in Florida, but here we are. We got home from the Keys just ahead of a nasty swath of weather that reduced the Walt Disney World Half Marathon to seven miles, and sent a tornado through Ft. Lauderdale. Yikes. What a way to start this Weekly Roundup!
Sunday
- Cardio: 4.02 miles, walking
Since we unpacked and did a ton of laundry on Saturday, Sunday was a more chill day. But that didn’t mean I could skip my miles!
And then we just sort of loafed and lounged the day away. You know the pugs were so happy to have us back.
Monday
- Cardio: 6 miles, running + 2 miles, walking
- Strength: Arms + Abs, 60 minutes
Happy Monday and back to the gym we go! I started the morning with a really strong run.
And then I went back to the Y. It actually wasn’t super crowded, which was a surprise for a Monday after the New Year, but I wasn’t complaining. I also didn’t feel totally outmatched, which was another surprise after being out for so many days.
When I got home, it was time for Winter Storm Flynn watch. While we were located on southern edge of the front, high winds and tornadoes were predicted for our area. Every other school in our area shut down for Tuesday, while ours offered an early release. Sigh.
Tuesday
- Cardio: 4 miles, walking + 1.5 miles, ARC trainer
- Strength: Legs + Abs, 60 minutes
I hit the gym early, before the weather could get started, and wrapped it up with some walking miles. My legs (especially my hips) were a little sore, but I blame the long car ride of Saturday and gross weather. Again, I managed every rep and weight on my program, as if I had never left.
The winds whipped up soon after I got home, and our school finally called it quits. They sent a message advising that we could pick up students at 2 instead of 2:50. Students drivers, walkers, and bikers were also released. Everyone else had to wait until the busses came at 2:50. What a mess. You know we picked up A and his girlfriend for the afternoon. There was a tornado warning that kept us ready to run for our safe room, but the funnel touched down about 20 minutes from us. Not my favorite night.
Wednesday
- Cardio: 6 miles, running + 2.5 miles, walking
- Strength: Arms + Abs, 60 minutes
J has a new work schedule for the semester, so we are restructuring our runs and walks. This means I had one more day on my own. Boo.
It also means I didn’t have to get up super early, and since it was cold, I took advantage of that. For the first time ever, I went to the gym around 1, and was thrilled to find it nearly empty. The trainer told me to be out by 2:30, as that’s when all the middle schoolers arrive. No need to tell me twice!
I also treated myself to a soup and salad for lunch before I did school pickup.
Thursday
- Cardio: 4.14 miles, walking
- Strength: Legs + Abs, 60 minutes
After the storm, things keep getting colder and colder. This morning actually saw me wear another hoodie layer over the following outfit.
Friday
- Cardio: 2.59 miles, running + 2.65 miles, walking
- Meditation: Anti-Stress Class
I woke up late and was on a super tight schedule, so I told myself that I was going to run a mile straight to save time. Usually I run 5:1 intervals, but I figured I could try. And I did it! So I walked for a little break and then did it again for mile 2! Who am I?
Then I zipped over to the dojo to join an introductory Anti-Stress class. We covered qigong, tai-chi, and guided meditation over the course of 45 minutes. Surprisingly, I enjoyed it, and hope to try some more of the classes.
In the evening, we split up and I went to Eagle Scout Court of Honor, while the boys went to a Winter Guard show. I was very ready for bed at the end of the night.
Saturday
- Cardio: 4.5 miles, walking
I was hoping to make the drive to ParkRun, but I stayed up too late and my bed said “nope.” Instead, I walked in the wind at home.
A wanted to spend the day out, so I just used the opportunity to dig into work and meet some deadlines. It was a great use of time, especially since I still have to take down the Christmas tree. Procrastination, anyone?
Thoughts + Goals
Well, we are another week into 2024 and things are going well, especially after the vacation. We have a three day weekend so A still hasn’t even had a full week of school, but that will sort out.
We are working on band things and life things, and getting ready for another trip, so it’s all good things over here.
This week I am working on more miles without intervals, and leaning into some of the new workouts on my weightlifting app. Every few weeks, it switches things up (with no warning), and I get the chance to try new things.
How was your week? Did you get hit by any winter storms?
Weekly Rundown
I am linking up with the Weekly Rundown, with Confessions of A Mother Runner and Running on the Fly! Check them out!

Wow, you did have some crazy weather. It doesn’t get as cold here, but we’ve had some very cool (for us) and rainy weather. NO COMPLAINTS. Oh, and while our Christmas tree is down, there is still lots of Christmas stuff lying all over the place here, waiting for me to organize it and put it away. Ugh.
Nice job on the running- sounds like both running and the strength training are going really well!
runswithpugs says
Yeah, no complaints on the colder weather here, either. It makes everything so much more enjoyable.
Deborah Brooks says
Looks like you are in a really good place with your runs and workouts! We all seem to have weather challenges this week. Have a great week ahead!
runswithpugs says
It’s been rough out there!
Kimberly Hatting says
Momma N really did a number on everyone this week! She will not break us, LOL! Nice job on your continued work at the gym 😉
runswithpugs says
No she will not!
And yes, I was back at it again, today! Good times!
Wendy says
Oh, the weather…we were slammed with a bad winter storm and now it’s crazy cold. I’m amazed at the volatility of the weather–it’s bad everywhere! Nice work on getting your runs done and your dedication to strength training! It will pay off for you!
runswithpugs says
EVERYWHERE! And I know it’s not the same kind of weather, but it’s still so disruptive.
Susanne says
I love your attitude and it sounds like you’re doing great with all your training, way to go!!! How scary about that tornado – but I suppose you’re used to such things.
runswithpugs says
Ehhhh.. We’re a little out of tornado alley… Hurricanes are more my speed! I’ll take a good hurricane over a twister any day of the week.
Michelle says
Crazy weather seems to be the theme across the board! You look like you’re in a great groove with your runs and workouts. Nice job getting it all done even with travel.
runswithpugs says
It’s going really well!
Darlene Cardillo says
We had snow. Then rain. And today snow again. A roller coaster.
I hope to return to running. I plan to fully embrace intervals. I think it’s ok to walk as long you cover the miles.
Hope you and J can arrange your schedules. I hate to run alone but often I do.
runswithpugs says
I am a HUGE interval supporter, and think they are amazing for anyone and everyone.
Stay safe and warm!
Cari says
“but I stayed up too late and my bed said “nope.”
Yep. We need those. So valuable.
Glad you avoided the worst of the weather and damage. Boo about J’s new schedule, but glad you can readjust to have some time together.
runswithpugs says
Yessss. We do.
We will get in a good groove with her schedule and all will be well! I’d rather different days than no days!
Lisa @ TechChick Adventures says
what a crazy weather week – especially that stormy night. Yikes. I love the smile in your Friday picture 🙂

It has been crazy! I hope we get a few more months of coolness, but we shall see.

I know Winter can hit south. It just doesn’t stay!
You had a fantastic week (it sounds like anyway); congrats!
I’ve been doing Qigofor a while now. I love but I’m sure most of my friends would hate it.

It’s very unique, but also very beautiful and peaceful. It’s not my favorite, but I see the benefits for sure.
