As an “established” runner, with more than 10 years of experience, I feel like there are plenty of tips I can share with new runners, if asked. I am always happy to share solicited advice based on my personal journey. Here are some tips I would share.
Invest In The Right Shoes And Gear
While I know running shoes can be expensive, they really are worth it. If asked, I will very much advise anyone to go to their local running store for a proper fitting, and then invest in the shoes that work best. The same goes for socks. It’s vital to the longevity of your running journey to have the right gear and tools for the sport. Ultimately, it’s money well-spent.
Don’t Ignore Injury
No one likes to be hurt, but ignoring aches and pains is a recipe for running heartbreak. I would remind new runners that no one is invincible, and they should take care of problems before they turn into something worse. A short recovery break beats a long one any day of the week.
Safety First
No matter what, I would advise new runners to take the steps to keep themselves safe. This includes the usual rundown of maintaining situational awareness, letting people know where you are running, and listening to your gut.
Do What Works For You
Plenty of people are going to have lots of advice to offer new runners, but at the end of the day, everyone is different. As a new runner, you need to find what works for you. It doesn’t matter if you train in the morning or at night; if you run for fun or register for all the races; if you go it alone or with a group. Find what bring you joy.
Have Fun!
That’s it, really. That’s the advice. Running should be fun, so don’t ever let anyone take that from you. Find the joy in your pace, your experience and your journey. Remember your why, and enjoy the heck out of it!

Yes! All great tips! I like to especially stress to new runners the importance of getting the “right” shoes vs. the cute ones 🙂
