I’m known to have quite a few opinions, so it’s no wonder that I may have some about running. Even juicier, some of those opinions are unpopular ones. Ready to hear them? Let’s go!
5Ks Are The Worst
Yes, I run plenty of 5Ks, but they are absolutely terrible. I hate sprinting and sprinting for 3.1 miles is beyond awful. I’ll go back for more, of course, but the best thing about them is getting done and not being wrecked for the rest of the day.
Photo Opps Are Awesome
Sorry, not sorry, but I’m going to stop every single time. There are very few races that are so important to me that I can’t stop to document a unique moment.
Running In Costume Is… Genius
If you can’t have fun out on the course, what are you even doing? I love the idea of running in themed attired or even in costume. There are times when it might slow you down, but that’s ok! It’s totally worth it!
Intervals Are Valid
I stand by interval running and the Galloway Method with my whole heart. Running is for everyone, and if that means that some people (myself included), need to take some walk breaks along the way, that’s alright. There are people who can speed walk faster than I can run, and I’m not about to challenge their validity or athleticism. Do whatever gets you through the miles. It counts.

It’s self-explanatory.
That’s all I’ve got for today. What are your unpopular running opinions?

What a fun topic, Jenn! My unpopular running opinion is that I loved the marathon taper. I was told that I was supposed to have the taper crazies, but I always knew that I’d done the work and that my body needed a little rest time before the big event.

That’s a good one!

I agree! I hate 5Ks too! They absolutely burn me up and I’m useless for the rest of the day.
My unpopular opinion is that medals, T-shirts and goodie bags should be optional at races. It’s such a waste of resources to give out things to runners who’ll just throw them away later. Extra items should be an option that require an additional payment. This would also make the registration cheaper for those who just want to run.
runswithpugs says
That’s fair. Personally, I want the medal, but I know some people don’t.

I agree with your opinions.
I also think medals and tee shirts should be optional. Who needs them unless you are new to the sport?
There should be bagels and chocolate milk at the end of every race.

I love medals and t-shirts, but I can see having them as an option instead of just handed out.
Bagels and chocolate milk after every race would be epic.

Well this is fun! I have to say if loving these is wrong then I don’t want to be right. I’m on board with all of these.

A fun topic! I like 5k races, but I understand what you mean. I like that they’re not long. A few people have mentioned this, but medals and t-shirts should be optional. I’ve been running for almost 20 years and I don’t want any of those items in a race.
