It’s race and you’re about to cross the finish line! This is your big moment and you’re ready to be done with your run, but not so fast. There is some finish line etiquette we have to discuss.

Don’t Stop!
Once you step over that finish line, the gut reaction is to stop dead in your tracks, turn off your watch, and be done with your run. However, don’t forget that there are others still running around you, and your sudden stop might cause a collision! Keep moving down the chute, to collect your water and medal, and put on the brakes only when you are clear of other runners. You can even stop your running watch while you’re moving.

Don’t Purposely Cut Off Other Runners
Of course, you want that awesome finish line photo to commemorate your accomplishment, but please be considerate. Usually, at the finish line, people are pushing at their top speeds, making it hard to slow, stop, or change direction. Please check your surroundings before cutting across the road or making any sudden moves as you close in on that finish line. It’s for everyone’s safety.

Don’t Block The Finish Line With Your Group
Are you running your race with a group? Amazing! But as you approach the finish line, be mindful not to string that group across the whole pathway. You’ll block others as they sprint for the finish and I guarantee you won’t be super popular post-race. Make sure your area is open before you spread out for that photo, or save the group shot for somehwhere off course.

Don’t Jump In The Path Of Other Runners
Literally. It can be tempting to give a giant leap at the finish line, but again, be aware of your surroundings and the runners around you. You don’t want to get in then way of others’ hard-earned finish, and you don’t want to wipe out when you’re so close to the end (I’ve seen it happen and it’s not pretty). If you have to leap, be courteous and safe!

It’s definitely important to keep moving after crossing the finish line! I just try to get my stuff and get out of the way as fast as I can.
Same! I will get my staged finish line medal photo when the runners are done!
Sometimes we are in a daze of sorts at the finish line. Great reminders to be respectful to other runners
Absolutely… I have been there myself. But keep it moving!
Great advice. I’ve seen people do all of the above. When I used to coach cross country we had to actually teach the kids finish line etiquette, especially not to just stop. I don’t blame anyone for wanting to but just no.
It’s so important, especially at bigger races!
