When the humidity is high, a runner’s body begs for two things: fast hydration and a drop in core temperature. Instead of just chugging plain water and staring blankly into the fridge, keep these five runner-friendly cool treats on hand to cool down, jumpstart your recovery, and give you something incredible to look forward to during those final miles.

Tart Cherry & Coconut Water Popsicles
If you aren’t making your own recovery popsicles, you’re missing out! Tart cherry juice is famous in the running community for reducing muscle soreness and aiding recovery, while coconut water is packed with natural potassium and electrolytes. Pour a 50/50 blend of tart cherry juice and coconut water into popsicle molds, drop in a few fresh blueberries, and freeze. They are incredibly refreshing, perfectly tart, and bite back against post-run inflammation.

Frozen Watermelon Wedges with Sea Salt
Watermelon is over 90% water, making it one of the absolute best fruits for rehydration. But if you want to elevate it after a brutal run, slice it into wedges, sprinkle them lightly with coarse sea salt, and stick them in the freezer for about 30 to 45 minutes before you head out the door. The freezer gives the fruit an icy, slushie-like texture, while the touch of sea salt replaces the sodium you left out on the pavement.

The Blended Espresso Recovery Smoothie
If it’s not coffee, I don’t want it. For those mornings when you desperately need your caffeine fix but the thought of a hot beverage makes you break a sweat all over again, this gives you the best of both worlds: a cold caffeine kick and a solid dose of post-run protein. Blend a shot of chilled espresso (or cold brew) with a frozen banana, a scoop of chocolate protein powder, a splash of your favorite milk, and a handful of ice. It tastes like a decadent milkshake but does serious work to rebuild your muscles.

Chilled Grape Skewers
If you need something quick that you can pop into your mouth the minute you stop your watch, frozen grapes are the best. Thread whole red or green grapes onto skewers and keep them on ice in a freezer bag. When you get back from a run, they have a firm, sorbet-like consistency that instantly cools down your mouth and provides a quick, easily digestible hit of simple carbohydrates to restore your energy levels.

High-Protein Greek Yogurt Bark
When you need actual substance but still want something cold, yogurt bark is the answer. Greek yogurt is loaded with the protein your muscles need to repair themselves after a tough effort. Spread a thick layer of plain or vanilla Greek yogurt onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Top it with sliced strawberries, a drizzle of honey, and a handful of granola for a crunch (or play around with your favorite toppings!). Freeze for a few hours, break it into chunks, and keep it in a container for a fast, cold, grab-and-go recovery snack.

Reward Your Effort
Summer training takes serious mental grit. Bribing yourself with a freezing cold, nutrient-dense treat at the finish line isn’t just a fun reward; it’s smart recovery.
