August Runfessions For The End Of Summer

If I Had To Start Running From Scratch, Here’s What I’d Do

Back To School… For Everyone Else

August 8, 2026      15 Comments

On Monday, our district (and most of our state) goes back to school. Instead of that, we’ll be loading up the vehicles and dropping our only kiddo off to his first year of college in his first apartment. I’ve exited out of all the school emails and social media groups, and it’s kind of crazy how insulated I feel from all the back to school buzz. There’s been no band camp, no school supply shopping, no setting up lunch accounts or paying lab fees. Instead, it’s just been packing and organizing and enjoying these last weeks.

Sunday

  • Cardio: 4.27 miles, walking

It was a pretty quiet day. I had a morning walk, and went to lunch with Mr PugRunner. Some days are just uneventful like that.

Monday

  • Cardio: 3.91 miles, running

This was one of the best Mondays I’ve had in a long time. Was I running around trying to get everything done? Yes! That included a run… in the afternoon because we got hit by bad thunderstorms in the morning and it wasn’t safe.

BUT!

My college roommate and her family stopped to have lunch with us, on their way home from their summer vacation road trip! And it was the best!

And A and Mr PugRunner went jet skiing as a last hurrah of summer. I love that they got to spend that time together.

Tuesday

  • Cardio: 4.47 miles, running

Even though I was on the move to another client, I was able to squeeze in a run, AND get my hair done. Multitasking at its finest.

Wednesday

  • Cardio: 4.31 miles, walking

It’s been nice to have some new walking routes, but I’m not a fan of all the rain and bad weather. It gives me migraines, and I just don’t feel particularly motivated to do much of anything.

Thursday

  • Cardio: 5.14 miles, running + walking

Oh, do I need this week to wrap up! I had a ton on the schedule so I had to get out the door long before the sun came up. Not my favorite, but you do what you have to do.

Friday

  • Cardio: 4.5 miles, running + walking

We started before sunrise yet again. The moon was gorgeous, and that made it mostly worthwhile. I was done with some miles plus two client walks by 8AM, just in time for a bizarre sun shower and a glorious rainbow.

I made my second to last move of the week. Friends, I am so ready to go home!

Saturday

  • Cardio: 1.5 miles, running + walking

Another super early morning. This will be my last one for a while, and I’m so grateful. I actually didn’t get up with the alarm. My clients had a 2:30am potty request and when that alarm went off, I said “nope.” All I needed was one mile to keep my streak alive, so that’s what I did.

And I finally got to head home! A has wrapped up work for the week, too, so it worked out perfectly.

Thoughts + Goals

My mileage was down this week, due to scheduling. I’m sure it was a good thing, deep down. I made up for it with multiple dog walks per day, but I always feel unproductive when there’s a dip in my numbers.

The heat advisories continue another week. I’m so over it. I miss not sweating. And I miss not melting.

This next week is going to be difficult. I can’t believe I have to say “see you later” to my favorite (and only) kid. Oh, how things are going to change.

So keep me in your thoughts. The emotions will be emoting.

Oh mama! I feel you on the impending college departure. Be sure to reflect on the great job you did raising him to be the smart, independent man he has become. He’s going to do great! You got this!

It is a challenging transition for sure! I know you can do this. As Wendy said above, getting them ready to leave and go off and be independent means you did a fabulous job as a mom. He will still need you and you will always be his mom xoxo

I hope so. Self doubt has been creeping in. But I have to have faith and trust that it’s all going to work out.

Jenn, I’m going to have to send you a separate email. This transition is one of the hardest! I cant even describe how much I cried when I dropped Paul off at college. But- this is what we want for our kids, right? We don’t want them living at home forever! (wait- or do we??? No. No we don’t). It still doesn’t make this transition easier.
GOOD LUCK WITH IT. We’ll all be thinking about you.

I keep saying. This is the job. You raise them to be independent and productive members of society. The tears are for me. He is responsible and self sufficient and independent. He is so prepared for this. And to me, that means we succeeded. He knows the door is open, and that’s his safety net. But he is ready to fly. To hold him back would be cruel.

I really do miss buying school supplies and doing all the back to school things! I feel your pain. It will be a big week for all of you. I hope it all goes well! It’s hard to believe this time has come already! But just think of all the fun he will be having at school (along with some education too LOL) and know that you have raised him well 🙂 Sending positive vibes!!

He’s going to have the best time. And I hope we did a good job. There are so many mistakes and things I could have done better, but I hope he knows that he is loved and supported and our door is always open!

I”m going to buy post it notes to make myself feel better.

It’s time to put the high school days behind you, Jenn, you’re a college mom now! You will love watching A spread his wings and fly. You’ve put in the hard work and helped A turn into the amazing young man that he is today. Now it’s time to step back and watch him soar! I suspect you and Mr. Pug Runner will love your new empty nester situation!

It was a beautiful morning that turned quickly into a beautiful day. Sundays are hard because they are immediately followed by Mondays, and Mondays are hard.

Lots to catch up on this week! April is chock full of holidays, birthdays, days off, and events, so let’s get to it!

I was up and out early to drive to Flagler Beach for the #Missionpossible5k.

It was a small, well organized event, with an easy-to-follow course (the last mile was almost exclusively an ocean view), with great shirts and swag.

I was really pleased with my performance, and even more pleased with this beach sunrise. I’ll share more on the #RunnersRundown on Wednesday, so stay tuned!

Where did you run or race this weekend?

So good to stretch the legs today. I was super sore after a @runsmartofficial cross training session last night, and needed to just get out there and let the fresh air work its magic.

What are you up to today? I really need to take a moment with my calendar and get some plans locked into place.

I got to sleep in AND take advantage of some cooler temps. It really didn’t warm up until my last mile and that was just fine.

I feel like this month and next are really just flying by. So much is going on, and I want so badly to enjoy it all, including the crisp, sunny days where we find them!

Happy Monday! I don’t know about you all, but you Happy Monday!

I don’t know about you all, but your girl is TIRED. It is so hard to roll out of bed some mornings. Ugh.

I managed (finally) and banked six miles in some gross humidity. And now it’s time for some self care and then back to work.

Also. We have somehow acquired a pecan tree? Any tips on the growth and care of this would be greatly appreciated!

Sunday fun day! Just a short walk to start the da Sunday fun day!

Just a short walk to start the day and work out some stiffness. Some days, my ankle just doesn’t want to cooperate 🫤

I have been making graphics and content all day for a client, and now I’m about to do hair and makeup for a little event. Wheee!

This week is going to be BUSY! There’s a lot of changes to the regular routines (nails, a digital learning day, after school and weekend programming) and I have a race on Saturday and bocce ball on Sunday!

Who else is ready to dive in?!
