weekly wrap: 6.24.2018 – 6.30.2018

July 2, 2018      35 Comments

Happy Monday!  It’s time for the Weekly Wrap with HoHo Runs and Taking The Long Way Home!

If you do a weekly recap post, this is a great way to check in with other active bloggers for extra support, sharing and accountability.

Here’s the week in numbers:

Sunday – rest
Monday – 6 miles, running
Tuesday – rest + 60 minutes, kayaking
Wednesday – 6.25 miles, running
Thursday – rest + lighthouse climbing
Friday – 6 miles, running
Saturday – 4 miles, running

And, with that, June is over. My goal was 80 miles for the month, and I was able to end it with 85.7! This puts me just ahead of the 500 miles I needed to reach by the end of June for my 1000 in 2018 goal!

Sunday – rest

It was hot. So hot. We really didn’t want to do much of anything, and in fact, the only thing on the calendar was a birthday party after lunch. It was a Nerf battle party and it was absolutely adorable. The kids had a fabulous time, and I think I was just as worried out after the festivities as the kids who had been running around all day.

Monday – 6 miles, running

With the last week of June on the calendar, I had to bust out some miles. Monday’s run was fairly tough, but we got it done.

We also had some extra cuteness: little man wanted to spend some time with Big D, and shared her bed with her.

Tuesday – rest + 60 minutes, kayaking

We had another day at the Springs planned, this time at De Leon. My friend and her two boys joined little man and me for a nice drive to the park. Our first order of business was breakfast: make-your-own pancakes at the Old Sugar Mill. It’s kind of an amazing experience.

Afterwards, we took a dip in the Spring pool, and then took turns renting a kayak and paddle boat for a trip down the river.

Little man absolutely loves kayaking, and I am so glad to encourage the habit.

An hour later, we were hot and hungry, and enjoyed a picnic lunch and some more swimming, until the thunder storms came and we wrapped it up.

I didn’t love this location as much as tubing the Ichteucknee last week, but it was fun to do something different.

Wednesday – 6.25 miles, running

Another solid run.

Little man went to his friend’s house for the day. He had been looking forward to a playdate with her for ages, and her mom and I were glad to finally oblige.

In the evening, we had a Scouts activity at a local arcade/entertainment center. The kids rode go karts, played mini golf and tried their luck with the arcade games. It wasn’t my favorite of the events, but the kids had a blast.

Thursday – rest + lighthouse climbing

The St. Augustine Lighthouse had invited a few of the St. Augustine Moms Blog Contributors out to their site to explore. Even though we had already visited the lighthouse this summer, we thought it would be fun to do it again with other kids.

It was a beautiful morning, and we climbed the lighthouse twice again! Little man really seems to enjoy the ascent, and I am considering getting an annual pass just for something to do.

When we wrapped up the day, I took little man up to my parents. He was going to do a few days at Camp Nana + Papa Bear while Mr PugRunner and I took care of some things around the house.

I had a Scouts popcorn dinner that night, just to get some info about the upcoming fundraiser. I’m pretty much an introvert so these networking events can be fairly challenging. I took notes, ate my dinner and got myself home.

Friday – 6 miles, running

Another morning of running. I had messed up my calculations so this run put me at 81.7 for the month. However, I still planned to get in a few more on Saturday, just to be on the safe side.

Mr PugRunner put in a morning at work, and then I joined him for his ENT visit. He has been having some really nasty sinus issues and finally decided to get it checked out by a specialist. The good news is that the ENT doesn’t think it’s anything serious. He did an adjustment of medications and we will go back for a follow up in two weeks.

Saturday – 4 miles, running

The final four miles of the month were fabulous. I like being able to go into July a little ahead of the game.

Saturday promised to be busy. I put together a salad of watermelon, blueberry, feta and mint for a party, and then we drove up to pick up little man and celebrate 4th of July a little early with our friends.

We were only supposed to stay for about an hour, because little man’s triathlon had been rescheduled for this weekend. We had his bike and were just about to head out to the venue to do packet pick up and bike drop, when we got word that the parking lot and site were flooding from rain. All Saturday happenings were canceled and the race director finally reported that instead of a swim-bike-run, the kids would just do a swim-run event. All packets could be picked up Sunday morning, and it would be a much more low key event. It was a little disappointing, but understandable.

Of course, we were all thrilled that we didn’t have to rush off, and settled in to have some more fun. And cocktails!

July is going to be hard. Yes, it will be boiling hot (no surprise, there), but also we will have some vacation days thrown in where I may not get out to run, and obviously, I will be doing more 5Ks than anything else.

Holiday weeks are also tough, with all the events and celebrating. I am looking forward to the 4th of July, but I also know I will be working extra hard to stay caught up on my running. I do have a 5K planned for July 3, and I am excited for that.

How was your week in training?

How do you adjust your training for holidays and special occasions?

I like the variety of adventures you are going on with the little man this summer! I recently did a kayaking and springs adventure in the FL panhandle. I was amazed by the water. So cold too! I’m sad to hear the bike portion of the tri was cancelled. I hope you son wasn’t too disappointed. Thanks for linking!

We are definitely trying to take advantage of the days off!

Isn’t the water freezing?? There are a few places in the panhandle I want to visit, but it’s a bit far for a day trip, so I need to make a road trip plan.

He was a little bummed about the bike cancellation, but he can try again next year.

That cool spring has to be such a find in the Florida heat! We’ve had a little bit of Florida style weather this summer and I don’t like it at all! Glad to know you have ways to deal with it.

That lighthouse is cool! The place in Wisconsin where my parents have a place has about 5 or 6 lighthouses. It’s a peninsula and it’s rocky so back in the day, they used them for ships to navigate. We love lighthouses…

The springs are so amazing. They’re really quite incredible to visit, especially since they are all so different.

It must be so cool to have so many lighthouses in one area!

Yay – I got to 503 miles at the end of the month and was really happy to be slightly ahead so I know that feeling. You have the same Garmin as me and similar pace, too – nice.

I usually take my kit on holiday and have some runs, we often go away in the UK so it’s easy to just take stuff on the train. In Iceland last Feb, I amazed my friends by going out in the snow, but you know what it’s like, you have to run, you have to run!

Hope you manage to fit in your runs OK in July. I was thinking you can get the mileage in by doing 5k at 5am every morning. That’s my fallback plan for this UK heatwave!

      Oh, Iceland! How fun!

I have gotten to run in the snow before and it was amazing! I took a break this past winter in the mountains because it was so icy, I was afraid I would roll down the hill LOL!

I hate streaking, but I may have to go for it this month to make up some time. It would be nice to occasionally be able to “sleep in”, but this is a pretty big goal and I would hate to fail this particular challenge.

Oh that cocktail photo was what caught my attention in the LinkUp. What a beautiful area. I love the St. Augustine lighthouse although we didn’t climb it because even in May it was too hot for our northern thermostats. One day. I really loved my visit to the area.

The nice thing is the ventilation inside the lighthouse – there are open windows along the way and it gets a delightful cross breeze. I just climbed the lighthouse on Bald Head Island this past week and I thought I was going to suffocate or sweat to death as there wasn’t any venting!

So glad you enjoyed our city! It really is quite beautiful!

🙁 I think we all go through fits and spurts of mojo. I can’t keep up with challenges to save my life, so the fact that I am still on track for this is pretty amazing to me. That being said, I’m about to try an abs routine, so we will see if I can stay on track with that.

Jenn I am so amazed at how much you guys pack in!! AND you get your running in! I know you said you didn’t love the location as much, but the day out at the Springs looked absolutely amazing. I wish I weren’t terrified of open water! I may need to seriously work on getting over that! Holidays and summertime time-off really does make it hard to stay on schedule. But where there is a will, is a way! I usually train with a group during times like this so I have a little support and push to keep going. I know that isn’t for everyone though. I only have myself to think of (well, and my husband but he does his training thing too! The kids are older and don’t live with us so we don’t have to have their schedule to manage as well) so I’m able to just keep going, no matter what. Signing up for a race is a great way to keep motivated though!

Well done on hitting the running goal! YES!

It’s funny – I’m not afraid of the ocean, but I am fairly grossed out by lakes and rivers. The springs, though, are so cold and fresh with so much flowing water that my brain seems to think they are cleaner? Granted, there are snakes and gators around, but they don’t seem to be the biggest threat in the colder water.

Training with a group has made a huge difference for me. I was also dedicated to being a lone wolf, but I think I’ve moved past that.

We have a long vacation this month, much needed. But at the moment I’m in the throes of all the preparations and that’s never much fun.

I get you on the meetings being draining! At least sometimes.
