As you read this, we are entering into Thanksgiving week! It’s a mad rush to the end of the year from this point on, but I’m ready to ride it out. Or run it out, as it were. Let’s go!
Sunday
- Cardio: 4.03 miles walking
Even though Saturday night was great, I was still in a terrible mood over the tree situation. I walked myself, and walked the pugs. And then, I sulked. It happens. I did rally enough to do house things, but I refused to clean up the tree mess because I just couldn’t deal with it.
Monday
- Cardio: 4.59 miles, running + walking
Things were a little rushed this morning as I had to fit in my run and then get to jury duty!
The run was great. I do love chasing the sunrise.
And jury duty went well. Ultimately, I was not selected, and that’s ok. It was a really fascinating process and I look forward to being called again. It would be cool to serve on a jury.
Mr PugRunner also returned from his time away with his brother. It was a long day for everyone, for sure and we were happy to just cook dinner and chill at home.
Tuesday
- Cardio: 6.42 miles, running
- Strength: Legs + abs, 50 minutes
Tuesday’s run felt great. The weather has been chilly, and I am loving every second of it.
I also went to the gym. The EGym circuit hasn’t been feeling great for me… it’s fine, but I don’t feel like I’m getting any kind of solid workout, so I decided I need to return to my previous workouts. We started with legs and abs and I didn’t hold back. I knew I would be hurting, but no guts, no glory, right? I did all my squats, presses, and extensions, and things felt way more productive.
Wednesday
- Cardio: 5.45 miles, walking
- Strength: Arms + abs, 50 minutes
The delayed onset muscle soreness was NO joke, so I opted to take a nice walk on Wednesday, rather than pushing too much harder. My glutes were aching, as were my thighs, and it felt nice to stretch them out, on a gray, drizzly day.
Then it was time to let my upper body experience some punishment. Just like yesterday, I leaned into the workout with my whole heart, and was really happy to feel like I was doing something good.
My evening was taken over by a board meeting, which was fine. We have had to reschedule more than once due to hurricanes and other conflicts so I’m glad we finally all got together to make things happen.
Thursday
- Cardio: 6.90 miles, running + walking
Now both halves of my body were sore, so I did the best I could with this run. I also decided that cardio would be enough of a workout for the day, to give myself a chance to recover. In other news the new tree came. We went with unlit, this time, and it’s a little shorter. That being said, it looks much wider, and I am all about a fat tree. So. Crisis averted.
That evening, I went to a school fundraiser with my mom and J. The art teacher does a quarterly arts/craft night and this time, we made gingerbread house welcome mats! It was the perfect night, with just enough holiday cheer.
Friday
- Cardio: 6.72 miles, walking
- Strength: Legs + abs, 50 minutes
So at this point, I was still pretty sore, and it was freezing cold and windy, so we just decided to walk. It was also time to put the pugs in their hoodies, but they are loving their walks as well.
I was ready for another gym session, and even though I was still sore, it wasn’t terrible, To help combat the feelings, I did the harder lunges and squats first, and ended up with some of the extensions and presses.
Saturday
- Cardio: 5.59 miles, walking
I slept in hard, but it was ok because it was so cold this morning.
Cari reminded me that it’s a very momentous anniversary: five years since I broke my ankle! Can you believe it? What a time! I feel like so much has happened so quickly since that time, but I’m proud to say that I’m up and moving every day, and I’m not sure I can ask for much more.
Thoughts + Goals
So. This week, I have a Turkey Trot 5K and and next week, there is another “cross country” 5K. I feel great about both of them, although I may walk most of the second.
I am also feeling good about the start of my training for my February half. Even though it will be in Florida rather than another state, I’m excited about the idea of distance again.

I remember when you broke your ankle—what a terrible injury! You’ve bounced back remarkably, and I’m excited for you to tackle the half marathon again!
Glad you got a new tree! We had to do the same thing last year.
runswithpugs says
I wish I was further along, but what can you do?
I also wish I could handle a real one again. I’m just deathly afraid of fire, and I couldn’t leave the house without anxiety that we left the lights on. Also understanding that trees get super crispy here in Florida. You really can’t even buy them until two weeks before Christmas if you expect them to last.
Coco says
I still think of your accident when I am walking down the stairs! So glad you are recovered from that.
Those gingerbread house mats are so cute!!
Good luck with your Turkey Trot!
runswithpugs says
I hate stairs so much. They terrify me. The fact that I have to go up and down them every day is the worst.
I am excited about the trot. I haven’t done this one in years.
Deborah Brooks says
Gosh I do remember that ankle accident of yours! Love a good comeback story 🙂 Glad you got your tree figured out. Love the door mats. Have a great Thanksgiving!
runswithpugs says
And so similar to yours! I’m glad there was a comeback, but I could have done without it.l
Happy Thanksgiving!
Jenny says
I love your new tree! I like fat trees as well. Well, actually I guess I just like all Christmas trees.
Happy (?) anniversary! When you look back at that picture, aren’t you SO HAPPY that you’re not back there? think how far you’ve come since that day!
runswithpugs says
Christmas trees are gorgeous, but the fat ones hold a special place in my heart.
I know… it’s weird to “celebrate” but also, it was such a defining moment. Yes. I am so glad not to be back there. It was a dark time and I’m not sure I’m emotionally over it lol.
Kimberly Hatting says
Those gingerbread mats are cute! I was just thinking I need a holiday-themed door mat as well. I accidentally bought a regular (fat) tree by mistake, and hod to make a return trip back to swap it for the skinnier one that is now gracing my dining room. There’s no way a regular tree would fit where I had envisioned its placement. I still might put up one of my “old” trees somewhere, though, which are the more traditional size. We shall see.
runswithpugs says
Ha! I was sad that my original tree didn’t look fatter, so this works out. Your tree is so pretty. I shoved the old one out on the porch and will add lights and maybe some popcorn garland or something. I don’t know. that’s a next week problem.
Susanne says
No guts, no glory! I love that!
A gym I went to for a while in Sweden had egym. My mother-in-law used it and I think she liked it, but to me it seemed like it was more for those who just wanted “some exercise” rather than real strength training.
Isn’t it a good feeling looking back at previous bad times (ie injuries) and how far we’ve come? Even if I’m miserable-ish right now, I still know it’s nothing compared to the summer of 2023, and I’m immensely grateful for that! Your injury was way worse than mine. And now you’re about to run a half marathon! Hats off to you!
runswithpugs says
It’s a good workout, but I felt so caught up in making sure I hit all the marks and rotated properly, that I couldn’t made adjustments to weights or reps.
I mean. Let’s not put too much emphasis on the word “run” lol. There will be walking! And it’s fine, right? It was a hard injury and a rough recovery, especially because of the covid limitations. On the plus side, I didn’t miss a lot of races because they were all paused. I am proud of where I am today, and try to give grace because I am so much better.
Hugs to you. I hope you start feeling some relief.

Nice week! Seems like you’ve been increasing your mileage. I love the gingerbread house door mats! What a fun fundraiser. Also the pugs’ coats/sweaters are too cute.
runswithpugs says
The pugs are ridiculous! But I am a sucker for matching their little hoodies.
Lisa @ TechChick Adventures says
Those door mats turned out really cute! Glad you found a new tree that you liked. Our tree will be such a target for our cat Sam! Should be quite interesting.
runswithpugs says
Oh, I hope you post pics of Sam vs. the tree!
Debbie says
I love doing holiday crafts, but haven’t done anything cool recently. I love your gingerbread house welcome mats. They turned out great!
This will be my first year in forever not running in a turkey trot… Happy Thanksgiving!
runswithpugs says
This is a good one. I needed a festive holiday mat so the timing was perfect.
Happy Thanksgiving!
Darlene S Cardillo says
Nice week with a mixture of fun and fitness.
A half marathon will be a great challenge. I think you are ready to take it on.
runswithpugs says
It will be fun. My goal is to cross the finish line with a smile.
Marcia says
Oh wow 5 years already! I well remember your ankle incident. You’ve made a fantastic comeback. Looks like you had a very full week. The door mats are adorable!
runswithpugs says
Can you believe? It’s been a long hard road, and it’s still ongoing, but that’s the journey, right?
