What? The first runfession should absolutely be that I can’t believe the year is 1/3 over! That’s ridiculous! I haven’t been home for most of it, which is also rather ridiculous, but May will be better, and easier.

For this month’s trip to the runfessional, let’s join up with Marcia’s Healthy Slice…
Let’s Start By Runfessing…
That I am obsessed by the two giant alligators I have been seeing lately. Usually, gators over a certain size are removed (and summarily euthanized) on the basis of being a nuisance. And gators usually don’t seem to stay in pairs in one body of water. This leads me to believe that they are a mated pair and there will be babies hatching one of these days. It’s amazing, but also a little scary: these gators are in the middle of a planned community with easy enough access to the sidewalk and park, if they were so inclined. Maybe I should flip that and say people and animals have easy access to the water. Overdevelopment has unhoused so much of our wildlife. It’s heartbreaking to see. I have to share a couple of pictures: the top shows both alligators, the bottom shows closeups of them. I had my phone zoomed pretty closed, but I would say I was about 35 feet from the single gator on the right of the second photo (and ready to run)

Next, I’ll Runfess…
That the attitude in the running community has been hot garbage lately. That “walkers tolerated” ad in Boston stirred up a whole hornet’s nest of people just being so awful and I’m sick of it. Stop being cruel and unkind. Stop tearing other people down. It’s not cool, it’s not cute. Enough, already.

My Next Runfession Is…
Florida (and parts of Georgia) is on fire. Literally. The red fires are active, while the brownish ones are contained (not necessarily controlled). One of the adjacent counties has already had evacuations, and we have already checked in with my parents in case they need to leave. We are in a record drought and I don’t know when we will see relief. Tens of thousands of acres have been destroyed, as well as homes. The air quality is terrible (mornings start out nicely and by 8:30 the air is so thick with smoke you can’t even be outside) and we are going to see the negative impact of this for years. It used to rain daily in Florida, between three and four in the afternoon, like clockwork. Now, it keeps getting more and more dry. It’s not sustainable.

I Runfess…
That I did not know dogs could get concussions. Aren’t we lucky? Luna ran out into the yard the other day, and barreled head first into the fence. She rocked herself pretty well, and I asked Mr PugRunner to have her checked out because she might have hurt her neck. Of course, her eyes were two different sizes when she was examined, so she’s being treated for that. I can’t wait to get home and snuggle her.

Finally, I Would Runfess…
That it is Kentucky Derby week and I am all in. What is this obsession? I don’t know. I don’t think about it until mid-April, and I don’t think about it after the race ends. But I am so in love with the horses and the fashion. I’m making some traditional derby food, we are attending a Derby event and I even got a book called “The First Kentucky Derby: Thirteen Black Jockeys, One Shady Owner, And The Little Red Horse That Wasn’t Supposed To Win” by Mark Shrager, so I could actually learn about the history of the event.

What do you have to runfess this month? Do you live in an area where there are wildfires? Do you hyperfixate on random things?
