When I saw the ad for the inaugural Biscuits and Bubbles 5K, it got in my head that I had to run it. The race took place in the San Marco area, to support Haven Retreat, an organization whose mission is to create sustainability for foster and adoptive families. Three cheers for a great cause, and for trying something new. I already had an April race in mind, but what’s one more?
I Asked For The Entry As A Gift
Instead of an Easter basket of candy, I asked Mr PugRunner to gift me an entry to the event. I thought it was a fair trade. Plus, I loved the idea of getting to run the first ever race, put on by a known local company, in a part of town I don’t usually frequent. I was also super interested in the Mimosa Bar and Breakfast Biscuits, post run.
The Morning Of/Packet PickUp
Since I don’t usually go to San Marco, I left my house a little earlier than needed. I picked up a bagel for the road, and followed my GPS to the venue. Packet pickup was offered in advance, but day of services were offered from 7:30AM. Fortunately, I found a great parking spot, and got my bib, t-shirt, and refreshment vouchers a little early outside The Posting House. This gave me plenty of time to walk around and use the portapotties several times. My stomach has been off.
At The Start Line
This was a small race, in part because it’s new, but also probably because there were several other running events in town that weekend. There were just under 500 people between the 5K and the 1 mile fun run. Again, that was fine by me. We lined up and the race director and Haven Retreats representative both made speeches in advance of the start. The gun sounded and the 5K runners took off.
Miles 1-1.5
The race was an out and back, with one additional loop to make up some time. We started on Hendricks and ran through to San Jose, with a loop around a residential street. It was an open course, with cones and a police motorcycle escort, but I still don’t love having cars pass next to me. There was also a water stop in the first half of the race. The temperatures had increased pretty rapidly, and my right foot was a little achy as a result (sudden weather changes never do well for me). Despite that and the little hills, I got through the first half just fine.
Miles 1.5-3.1
The second half of the race was harder. To be honest, I felt incredibly discouraged, and like i wasn’t running well at all. I took a little walk break at the water stop, but then put my head down and kept going. Finally, the finish line appeared, but for me, I prefer when it’s around a corner, not at the end of an eternal straightaway. I tried to shut down the negative internal monologue and pushed through the finish line. It wasn’t until I collected my medal and checked the results that I saw I had earned another post-injury PR, by seconds.
Post Race
I was absolutely elated, so it was definitely time to celebrate. We had vouchers we could exchange for a Chick-Fil-A chicken biscuit and a mimosa from the mimosa bar.
I chose peach to make a quick bellini. It’s the best.
I found a quiet spot on these pretty stairs to enjoy my breakfast and bask in my accomplishment.
Final Thoughts
For a new event, this was a really well done race. While I didn’t love the course (it was fine, but nothing special), I thought everything was very much on point. Runners got really nice, soft race shirts, and the medals were acrylic, but still pretty cool. And I came in 5th place in my age group, out of 17, which feels so great.
I’m looking forward to the Spud Run 10K in two weeks! This will be my first time testing a longer distance while under this particular training “strategy” and I’m excited to see what happens out there!

Yay for a post-injury PR and getting the 5th place! Well done!
Putting your head down and pushing through was worth it.
I would love to get bubbly and biscuits at the finish line!

Congrats on snagging a PR! I love the idea of a mimosa bar – that’s sounds like more fun than the typical post-run beer!

Woohoo! Congrats on the PR! I love a race with tasty snacks/beverages at the end. Sounds like a fun one!

Oh wow, this race does sound fun! Races in Florida can be kind of dull- scenery-wise unless they’re near the ocean, so I don’t expect much. But the post-race festivities sound great, and YAY for another PR! I love the medal. I’m excited for your upcoming 10K.
