With the higher temperatures and increased humidity, we are spending a lot more time heading out in the dark. On the plus side, this means more sunrises, and I am absolutely here for it. Let’s take a look at the past week.
Sunday
- Cardio: 5.01 miles, walking
Good morning, Happy Sunday, and let’s get this week started! It was pretty hot, but I managed a really nice five mile walk.
The one thing I really wanted to do was attend the Grand Opening of a new ice cream shop: Cookie Bird. We arrived at noon, and I absolutely enjoyed my soft serve in a birthday cake confetti waffle cone with chocolate curls. Raise your hand if you support ice cream for lunch.
We did have time for actual lunch, too, and we weren’t to a newer restaurant in our area. They were really struggling with service, and Mr. PugRunner’s food got “lost” in the shuffle. We were super patient and never complained (we had nothing but time and the weather was actually pretty nice on the patio), but our server was so upset and apologetic. She actually comped us his meal and gave us a gift card to come back. So unnecessary, but also so kind. Of course we’ll be back.
Monday
- Cardio: 5 miles. running + 1.93 miles, walking
Even with the sun and the heat, this was a decent outing. I am making an effort to get up earlier to get in as much as I can before things get hot, and it’s working well.
A had his first day of his new job, too! It went really well, and he said he met lots of nice people and enjoyed it. I’m grateful for that.
Tuesday
- Cardio: 3.91 miles, walking
- Strength: Legs + Abs, 50 minutes
J and I took things to the beach, with her daughter. I have really been craving that salt air, and I was even more happy to see the sunrise.
We went out for coffee and pastries afterwards, which was nice, too.
From there, I hopped back in the gym, for a pretty tough leg workout. A had his second day of work, and we had a long evening meeting for Scouts.
Wednesday
- Cardio: 6.18 miles, running + .89 miles, walking
- Strength: Arms + Abs, 50 minutes
Happy Global Running Day! I loved the beach so much on Tuesday that I went back again. I can’t help it. Sometimes, I need the ocean.
Arm day at the gym, which I actually really enjoyed. My app increased my weight again, so it felt extra productive.
Thursday
- Cardio: 4.26 miles, running
I was on a tight timeline today, so my run had to end fast.
A had a Safe Teen Driving Course with our local Sheriff’s Department. It’s a free class offered on a first come first serve basis, with a classroom portion and a behind the wheel segment. He went out on a closed course with an officer, and they reviewed things like parallel parking, forward and reverse serpentine, figure eights, and some more daring skills. He did well behind the wheel, and will be testing for his license at the end of the week.
Friday
- Cardio: 6.79 miles, running + walking
I woke up with a lot of anxiety as it was going to be a busy day. First, J and I met up for some running and walking. The humidity was miserable.
I hurried to Parlour to grab a raspberry pistachio doughnut for National Doughnut Day. And then I cleaned up and got to work building a brunch box for a friend.
After I dropped everything off, I loaded the car and made the trek to Orlando. Meghan and I had a fun 24 hours planned.
We started with Aquaglow at Aquatica Orlando (hosted on behalf of Orlando Date Night Guide). This was a super fun, after hours event, with lots of neon and glow effects. We enjoyed a private area with samples of Aquaglow themed food and drink, and then hit the lazy rivers, wave pool and foam party.
I’ll have more on IG this week, but it was a great night. We got home way to late with a 4.9K on the books for tomorrow.
Saturday
- Cardio: Rainbow CommUNITY 4.9K Run (2.6 miles)
Rise and shine! We packed the car and made our way to downtown Orlando. Meghan was working a table at the race until start time, so I was happy to help her with set up and manning the booth. It was a beautiful morning, with so many lovely people, all gathered in memory of the Pulse nightclub tragedy eight years ago.
Race report to come.
We celebrated the morning with mimosas and brunch, and then I had to get back home. It will be an early night.
Thoughts + Goals
My streak is going well, and I am enjoying connecting with other people doing the same.
I hope by next week, I’ll have acclimated to the weather, but it seems so much hotter this year. Do I say that every year? Probably.
I’d also like to share that I bought a dehydrated sourdough starter, and I plan to start making sourdough. Why? Apparently, I needed another challenge. The truth is that I’ve been trying to do a little more batch cooking and meal prep. Cooking in the summer is miserable, so I’ve been making muffins (banana chocolate chip and protein) and pasta salads or casseroles for us to eat throughout the week. With A working, schedules are a bit more irregular, so it makes sense to just have things ready to go. For some reason, sourdough feels like it should be a part of the plan.
How was your week in training? Have you had any incredible customer service lately? Do you like waterparks? Any sourdough tips for me?

A lot of good food this week. Yes on the ice cream.
Good luck with the streak. You got this.
And congrats on another race.
I’m jealous that you live near beach. I’d be spending time there.
runswithpugs says
I know I could count on your ice cream support!
It’s still a 20-40 minutes drive depending on what beach I visit, but yes. The access is nice for sure.
Kimberly Hatting says
Glad to hear the streak is going well! That’s a great incentive to keep active in the summer heat!
runswithpugs says
It’s a good streak. The walking is nice in the heat, for sure.
Coco says
I love that medal — looking forward to the report!
I missed National Donut Day — I only heard about it after I’d gotten my breakfast at the airport Starbucks.
I need to find my early morning mojo again ….
runswithpugs says
I love it, too. It was a lovely balance between honoring the victims and survivors, and celebrating a beautiful community.
It’s hard to get up in the morning. But I went out at 8Am today and it was already so freaking brutal. So that will be my reminder.
Deborah Brooks says
I applaud you for getting out there everyday this week with your extreme heat. I never acclimate!
runswithpugs says
I feel like I will never!
Jenny says
Yep, the brutal Florida summer is HERE. Sounds like you had a great week though. I can’t wait to hear more about that race- the medal is so cool!!!
You’re reminding me that I haven’t been to the beach in way too long. I love your photos- I’ll have to make an effort to get there soon.
runswithpugs says
I really liked the medal and the event was thoughtful and lovely.
Yes! Definitely find time to get to the beach. You have some pretty ones your way!
Wendy says
Congrats on your race! What a great medal and a meaningful remembrance of a terrible tragedy.
It’s a nice surprise when customer service is good, isn’t it? I had a bad experience this week with my bank–a very rude and condescending representative. Why?!
runswithpugs says
It was a beautiful day.
Ugh. I’m sorry that happened.
Melissa says
YES to ice cream for lunch! I wanted ice cream for dinner tonight but I was vetoed. Can you imagine? And i love that race medal. Nice race and a beautiful tribute.
runswithpugs says
What monster vetoed you???? I will always say yes to ice cream.
Lisa @ TechChick Adventures says
My husband is the sourdough MASTER! He grew a starter from scratch (I think in 2020) and after many failed attempts he got a good one. He even bought a special cast iron dutch oven pot to bake it in. It’s amazing and we love to eat it – especially in grilled cheese sandwiches. I hope yours does just as well!!
runswithpugs says
Oh gosh! The pressure is on! I got my small jar and bread flour today. Tomorrow, the feeding begins.
Debbie says
I don’t envy your heat, but getting up early to beat it smart. Getting up the next morning for a race after traveling had to be stressful. Congrats on getting it done!
Oh wow, that’s a blast from the past. I haven’t done the whole sourdough bread thing since the summer/fall of 1980 in my first apartment.
runswithpugs says
Haha! I’ve been seeing all these videos of people making it and got inspired. I don’t even love sourdough, but I want hot bread with butter.
Jessie says
What a fun week! So much delicious food and running! And those sunrises- stunning!
runswithpugs says
The sunrises are the best.
