Welcome to “What Runners Want: Vacation Edition.” Tis the seasons for holidays and trips, and for runners, this can present some challenges. Let’s talk about some things runners look for once they’ve booked their travel plans.
Access To A Treadmill Or Running Path
When faced with a new area, I think most runners want to have an actual place to run. Some look for a hotel gym, complete with treadmill. Others look for a tried and true running route. Check with your concierge or do some research on social media to find your best options.
A Local Race
The best way to get your run on while on vacation is to sign up for a local race. Some runners use the race as the core of the vacation, while others add one in on top of the rest of the plans. Both options are absolutely valid and I recommend both whole heartedly.
New Views
One of the great things about traveling is exploring new terrains and sights. When visiting a new place, I always look to run somewhere different than what I usually do. For me, I have access to suburban neighborhoods and beaches. When I travel, I love getting in some city or trail miles to mix things up. It’s also fun to get different temperatures or structural backdrops, for something different.
New Running Stores
It’s neat to check out local running stores when you travel. Sure, a lot of them have the same brands and options, but different regions do offer different products, and you may stumble across a new item, fuel, or accessory. You might even make a new running friend.
Join A Local ParkRun
ParkRun is absolutely gaining popularity in my area, and if you can’t find a race, you may be able to join in with these free, community 5Ks. Once you’re registered with ParkRun, you are welcome to run with any group you find. It’s a great way to check out new areas and make new friends!

I really enjoyed running when I was away last week. It was nice to have different views and to be able to run on the beach. I also liked that I had a little more time in the mornings to run because I didn’t have to rush out the door to work!

Oh, I love that ParkRuns are gaining on popularity in your area! They are so fun.
I love signing up for races in new places – it gives you a better insight in the local culture. It helped me to get to know Cape Town a lot better!

Great list! I love to explore when I’m on vacation and running is such a great way to do it. Nothing like running past the Eiffel Tower when you’re in Paris!
