Turkey Trot season is surely upon us and you might be wondering: why would I run a race on the morning of one of our major holidays? I’d love to tell you!
Racing Is A Great Way To Start The Holiday!
I know I always love starting my holidays with a race, and Thanksgiving is no different. Whether you go for a 5K or a half marathon, movement is always a great thing, and I personally find it’s even more meaningful on a big day with lots of eating and peopling.
Turkey Trots Are Wonderful For Community Building
Nothing brings people together like group events, and Turkey Trots really are perfect for that. They bring together speedy sprinters, and non-runners alike, in one awesome, community experience. Two thumbs up for that!
I Love To Make Room For Dinner
There are so many yummy things to eat on Thanksgiving, so I like to go into it with some calories burned. Does it matter? Nah. But it’s a nice habit and makes me feel not super guilty about that second piece of apple pie.
Turkey Trots Are Fun
All races are serious, to a point, but Turkey Trots are just fun. People get dressed up, laugh, and rock it out on the course. If you are inclined to get up early on Thanksgiving morning, you’re in for a good time.
Turkey Trots Give Back
Most Turkey Trots work with charity partners to give back to local causes. Some allow you to make a contribution during the registration process. Others ask runners to bring some canned goods or non perishables to the start line for donation. Either way, it always feels good to give.

Totally agree. I’m currently pregnant with my first and about to head into the third trimester. I haven’t been working out as much as I would have hoped this pregnancy and so I’m afraid I will have to miss out on our family’s tradition of running the turkey trot. I know I have a good excuse but I hate feeling left out. I can’t wait to join in next year! I can at least go and cheer everyone on.

Can you walk it? If not, that’s ok! Cheering can be just as fun! Wishing you the best in these last few months!
