Now that it’s spring, it’s probably a great time to thin out your stash of running shoes. That’s code for “buy more running shoes,” in case you were wondering. What are the top things to look for in your running shoes? Let’s talk about it!

Size Is Just A Number
I always look for shoes that fit well, not just a particular shoe size. Through the years, my running shoes have ranged from a women’s 9.5 through a 10.5, and I’ve even worn men’s shoes in an 8.5 or 9. Every brand and model fits a little differently, so base your selection on what feels right rather than what the number on the tongue of the shoe reads.

Leave Extra Room
When you run, your feet do tend to swell just a little, so make sure you have a little extra room in your shoes. They should slosh or slip off, but you should also be able to wiggle your toes comfortably. Leaving space help avoid lost toenails, blisters, and chafing.

Lean On The Experts
Go get a professional shoe fitting. Fit specialists can analyze your foot structure and gait to help get you in a pair of shoes that should feel great. Obviously, it’s not the perfect system, but be open to suggestions. Remember, if something bothers you in the store, it will absolutely bother you at home, so be honest about how things feel, but absolutely give weight to the expertise offered.

Does Color Matter?
Does color matter? No. But also yes. I have never not bought a well-fitting pair of running shoes because I didn’t like the color. By the same token, I have very much bought running shoes because of the color. You should feel great about what you have on your feet. Get the colors that feel great to you. I can’t guarantee they will make you faster, but you can at least look amazing while you run!

These are great tips, Jenn. I agree, it’s important to choose a bigger size than with “normal” shoes. Runs always feel better with shiny new shoes!
People are so funny about going up a size in shoes. There were so many times I sold shoes to women (mostly) because they INSISTED that they wear a 7.5. They would come back in complaining a week later because… the shoes were too tight. Or they came in complaining of toe pain or losing toenails and refused to hear that maybe they should try going up half a size. I had zero patience for that.
Great tips. I tend to stick with either my Wave Riders or Kayanos. I made the mistake of trying another shoe that didn’t fit quite right in the heel (it was too loose) and I’ve been struggling with knee pain ever since. I’ll stick with what I know!
That’s how I am! Before my break, I was much more open to trying different shoes. Now, it’s Adrenalines or nothing.
The only Brand that doesn’t give me blisters is Brooks, so I stick to those! And luckily just about every shoe they make works pretty well for me. Having shoes that feel good is so important!
