How To Find Balance When Your Summer Routine Goes Out The Window

Summer is supposed to be the season of relaxing, slowing down, and catching your breath. But if you’re a parent, a business owner, or just someone who thrives on a predictable routine, summer can quickly become a disruptive hurdle. Between family travel, kids being out of school, social calendars packing up, and the brutal heat , your normal wellness routine can completely fall apart. It’s easy to feel like you have to choose between enjoying your summer or staying dedicated to your fitness goals.

But you don’t have to lock yourself into an “all or nothing” mindset. Finding balance during summer season isn’t about maintaining a perfect, rigid schedule. Let’s talk about learning how to blend your movement into the flow of life, wherever it takes you. Here are some ways to keep your sanity (and your momentum) moving forward when the summer schedule gets unpredictable.

Take Your Workout On The Road

Travel is one of the biggest routine-wreckers, but it’s also one of the best opportunities to expand your horizons. Instead of looking at a trip as a break from your fitness, use your workouts to experience your destination. Lace up your shoes early in the morning and take an easy run or walk to tour a new city. It’s the best way to explore local neighborhoods and familiarize yourself with your destination. And if the summer heat is too brutal for the pavement, find another way. Swap your usual miles for a few laps in the hotel pool. It keeps you moving, helps your body stay cool, and fits perfectly into the vacation mindset.

Book An Activity Or Adventure To Keep Moving

You don’t have to spend your vacation trapped in a tiny, windowless hotel gym just to check a fitness box. Instead, make movement a part of your itinerary by booking cool outdoor adventures. Rent paddleboards or kayaks at the beach, book a guided hiking excursion through a state park, or rent bikes to explore a coastal town. When you make the shift from “I need to go exercise” to “let’s go explore,” staying active becomes a highlight of the trip!

Embrace The Beauty Of The Snack-Sized Workout

When life gets busy, we often fall into the trap of thinking that if we don’t have a full, uninterrupted hour to dedicate to a workout, it’s not even worth doing. In the summer, you have to let that rule go. If a 45-minute run isn’t happening because of family plans or a packed schedule, break your movement down into smaller, manageable pieces. A 15-minute standing core session in the living room, a quick 10-minute stretch before bed, or a single mile walked around the block with the dogs all count. These little blocks of movement add up, protect your momentum, and keep your sanity intact without hijacking your day.

Redefine Success

Your January schedule and your July schedule probably don’t look the same, and that’s completely okay. If you try to hold yourself to the exact same training metrics during the height of summer travel and humidity that you do in the winter, you’re going to burn out. Give yourself permission to shift the goalposts. Maybe success this month isn’t about hitting peak mileage; maybe success is simply moving your body, prioritizing time with your family. and having fun.

Enjoy The Season While It’s Here

At the end of the day, summer is fleeting. The schedule changes, the trips, and the breaks in routine are exactly what make these months memorable. By learning to bend instead of break, you can protect the wellness habits you’ve worked so hard to build without missing out on the moments that matter most.

This is always such a great community event, centered around an incredibly inclusive event and with proceeds going to provide awareness, community outreach, education, advocacy and funding for organizations and individuals caring for adults with intellectual and developmental differences.

Founder @steph_sanalila does such a wonderful job with this event, making a fun environment for players, creating volunteer opportunities for local students and honoring the memory of her brother.

About this morning… I was up and out early to dri About this morning…

I was up and out early to drive to Flagler Beach for the #Missionpossible5k.

It was a small, well organized event, with an easy-to-follow course (the last mile was almost exclusively an ocean view), with great shirts and swag.

I was really pleased with my performance, and even more pleased with this beach sunrise. I’ll share more on the #RunnersRundown on Wednesday, so stay tuned!

So good to stretch the legs today. I was super sore after a @runsmartofficial cross training session last night, and needed to just get out there and let the fresh air work its magic.

I got to sleep in AND take advantage of some cooler temps. It really didn’t warm up until my last mile and that was just fine.

I feel like this month and next are really just flying by. So much is going on, and I want so badly to enjoy it all, including the crisp, sunny days where we find them!

Happy Monday! I don’t know about you all, but you Happy Monday!

I don’t know about you all, but your girl is TIRED. It is so hard to roll out of bed some mornings. Ugh. 

I managed (finally) and banked six miles in some gross humidity. And now it’s time for some self care and then back to work.

Also. We have somehow acquired a pecan tree? Any tips on the growth and care of this would be greatly appreciated!

Sunday fun day! Just a short walk to start the da Sunday fun day!

Just a short walk to start the day and work out some stiffness. Some days, my ankle just doesn’t want to cooperate 🫤

I have been making graphics and content all day for a client, and now I’m about to do hair and makeup for a little event. Wheee! 

This week is going to be BUSY! There’s a lot of changes to the regular routines (nails, a digital learning day, after school and weekend programming) and I have a race on Saturday and bocce ball on Sunday! 

Who else is ready to dive in?!
