5 Ways To Make Summer Running Fun Again

Too Hot To Handle

June 13, 2026      16 Comments

I don’t know what to say. The summer eased in and very quickly became one of the hottest on record. This weekend, we are seeing temps in the high 90s and low 100s, and I’m not into it. Not one little bit. I am so grateful we just got our a/c replaced because I don’t know how an older unit would keep up. But enough complaining (for this paragraph).

Sunday

  • Cardio: 5 miles, walking

Our week kicked off on a great note! I said goodbye to the pup I was watching and all her neighborhood deer, and moved back home!

And spent the rest of the day with the family. It’s always good to settle back in and sleep in my own bed.

Monday

  • Cardio: 5.78 miles, running + .63 miles, walking

Things were a little cooler in the morning, and I was down for it.

Tuesday

  • Cardio: 5.31 miles, running + .91 miles, walking

Another decent run, coupled with two dog walks. I don’t always record the distances, but this pup likes to get his steps in. Please note, I was almost attacked by Canadian geese while trying to film. Terrifying.

I had a busy day, with a dog walk, a drop in on two cats, and a manicure and pedicure. It’s probably been about a year since I had my toes done, but we are heading to a wedding and I needed to take care of all the things.

Wednesday

  • Cardio: 4.81 miles, walking

Look at that bluebird sky! Gorgeous! And still tolerable out, except for the gross bugs! That’s about to change quickly!

I was so excited for this afternoon! Mom and I had another craft day! This time, we decoupaged scallop shells and then met Mr PugRunner and my dad for dinner! Perfection!

Thursday

  • Cardio: 5.5 miles, running

This is when the temps started to turn. Not only were the bugs out in force, but the air was so thick and hot. Yuck. Forced myself through my run anyway. It’s getting harder to stay motivated.

Friday

  • Cardio: 6.67 miles, running + walking
  • Strength: 15 minute resistance band workout

It was so stifling hot that my run kind of quickly transitioned to a walk. The air is just so thick and it’s impossible to breathe. We are at the point where I just want to lay on cold tile floors and not move until winter.

Saturday

  • Cardio: 4.55 miles, walking

And we close out the week with more excrutiating temps. Yuck.

I am staying with a client through Sunday, but I still had some time to go to an appreciation event for another client, and meet up with some friends for a quick bite at the local grocery store (which has a wine and coffee bar and event space).

Thoughts + Goals

Summer can be over now. Goodbye.

It’s been a good few weeks. I’m doing an amazing job (if I do say so myself) of hydrating. Every day I’m having at least 60 oz of water, which, if you know me, is an improvement of 100%. Literally. Consistency is going strong.

I’m also doing wonderfully with hitting protein/fat/carb goals. I’ve all but stopped the mindless grazing and snacking. I’m more intentional with the snacks I do choose (even if a meat stick is nowhere near as delicious as a Reese’s peanut butter cup), but I’m staying the course.

Just another week. We are about to speedrun some really cool things over the next couple of months, and I hope you’re along for the ride!

We had some Florida-style heat and humidity this week! Yuck! But our weather has been all over the place. I woke up to 57 degrees this morning. I’m looking forward to running in that…

Also looking forward to hearing about your plans!

That’s great that you’re sticking with your goals! I do love a good meat stick, have you tried the Chomps Nashville hot chicken? But agree – it is no reese cup! (Barebells bars though…omg those are candy!) I loooove those shells — how beautiful!
Nice job staying so active even with the heat. It was in the 90s and feels like a hundred when I was in Florida this week. It made my runs very hard!

I haven’t had the Nashville Hot. I don’t love meat sticks (because I don’t love meat), but maybe I’ll see if I can find that one. I do love the Barebells. I keep them in the fridge so they don’t melt when I’m on the road and they are yummy.

It’s disgusting out. I hate it.

Good for you for getting out in the heat — I totally am with you on the (not) running in that kind of heat.

It was really fun. My mom is obsessed with shells and used to hit the beaches a lot to hunt for them and shark teeth. She had fun.

Ah, summer. I don’t know where you grew up, but I remember when summers used to be fun! I’m definitely enjoying a more relaxed schedule, but the heat and humidity are, as usual, no fun. Well, we just have to keep plugging along.
LOVE your nails! And- great job on the hydration and sticking to your eating plan. It’s hard to switch up your eating but it sounds like you’re doing it. And, I’m looking forward to these “really cool things” coming up!

I grew up in Northeast NJ. There were cookouts and going down to the shore and it was very different than just sweating all the time.

The really cool things are going to be soooo cool!

Really good job with your new eating habits!! And, well done getting all that cardio done despite the heat. It sounds like you’re doing really well with things. I also need to up my game a lot with hydration. I don’t know why that’s so hard! I’ll create some new habits with it when I get home.
How fun to have a craft day with your mom!

It’s the worst! I can’t stand this summer!

The wedding we are attending is garden party themed, so I tried to stay in the vibes.

I lost my water bottle so I have to get another one. Yuck.

I’m currently in Houston for the week, and I’m totally experiencing the tropical weather. It’s been raining almost nonstop as well, sos the humidity is even higher than usual. At least the mornings are warmer than the recent Iowa mornings, LOL.

It was a beautiful morning that turned quickly into a beautiful day. Sundays are hard because they are immediately followed by Mondays, and Mondays are hard.

Lots to catch up on this week! April is chock full of holidays, birthdays, days off, and events, so let’s get to it!

I was up and out early to drive to Flagler Beach for the #Missionpossible5k.

It was a small, well organized event, with an easy-to-follow course (the last mile was almost exclusively an ocean view), with great shirts and swag.

I was really pleased with my performance, and even more pleased with this beach sunrise. I’ll share more on the #RunnersRundown on Wednesday, so stay tuned!

Where did you run or race this weekend?

So good to stretch the legs today. I was super sore after a @runsmartofficial cross training session last night, and needed to just get out there and let the fresh air work its magic.

What are you up to today? I really need to take a moment with my calendar and get some plans locked into place.

I got to sleep in AND take advantage of some cooler temps. It really didn’t warm up until my last mile and that was just fine.

I feel like this month and next are really just flying by. So much is going on, and I want so badly to enjoy it all, including the crisp, sunny days where we find them!

Happy Monday! I don’t know about you all, but you Happy Monday!

I don’t know about you all, but your girl is TIRED. It is so hard to roll out of bed some mornings. Ugh.

I managed (finally) and banked six miles in some gross humidity. And now it’s time for some self care and then back to work.

Also. We have somehow acquired a pecan tree? Any tips on the growth and care of this would be greatly appreciated!

Sunday fun day! Just a short walk to start the da Sunday fun day!

Just a short walk to start the day and work out some stiffness. Some days, my ankle just doesn’t want to cooperate 🫤

I have been making graphics and content all day for a client, and now I’m about to do hair and makeup for a little event. Wheee!

This week is going to be BUSY! There’s a lot of changes to the regular routines (nails, a digital learning day, after school and weekend programming) and I have a race on Saturday and bocce ball on Sunday!

Who else is ready to dive in?!
