When you run in the hot Florida summer, the last thing you want to think about is a heavy, warm meal. You finish your miles, completely drenched in sweat, and the thought of something substantial makes you sick to your stomach. Your body is screaming for one thing and one thing only: something ice cold. When the heat index hits triple digits, your fueling strategy has to change. Not only do you need to replenish carbs and protein, you need to bring down your core temperature and rehydrate. Stat. Here are some of my favorite warm-weather snacks, meals, and hydration tricks to survive the season.

Stock Up On Popsicles
If you’ve never come home from a swampy long run and immediately indulged in a popsicle, you’re missing out on one of life’s greatest pleasures. Normal popsicles are fantastic, but the real game-changer for runners is the rise of electrolyte popsicles. Brands are finally catching on that we want recovery can come cold. Enjoying a frozen electrolyte pop right after you finish your miles does double duty: it instantly cools your body down from the inside out, and it starts replenishing the sodium and potassium you just lost. Plus, they taste darn delicious!

Watermelon Is Nature’s Sports Drink
There’s a reason you see watermelon at the finish line of so many summer races. It’s practically pure water, packed with natural sugars to replenish your energy stores, as well as amino acids that help with muscle soreness. I like to keep a massive container of cubed watermelon in the fridge all summer long. Coming home to a cold, crisp slice of watermelon when you are totally parched is unmatched. If you want to take it up a notch, sprinkle a tiny bit of sea salt on top to help with your electrolyte balance.

Surrender To Blender Meals
When it’s too hot to even want to turn on the stove, smoothies and blender bowls are lifesavers. A heavy breakfast after a humid morning run is a hard pass for me, but a cold protein smoothie goes down incredibly easy. Toss in some frozen berries, a scoop of your favorite protein powder, some spinach, and use coconut water or milk as the base. It gives your muscles exactly what they need to rebuild without making your stomach feel heavy or uncomfortable while your body is still trying to cool down.

Ice Cold Espresso Martinis
Hear me out! So this one is for the post-run celebration festivities, but it’s critical to remember to treat ourselves. While we’re busy chugging water and sports drinks all week long, weekends call for something a little more fun. A crisp, ice-cold espresso martini is my absolute favorite summer cocktail. It gives you that perfect little kick of caffeine, it’s incredibly refreshing when served straight out of a shaker full of ice, and it’s a great way to toast to surviving another brutal training week on the run!

Summer running will test and humble you, but the recovery doesn’t have to be. By leaning into cold, hydrating, and simple options, you can give your body exactly what it needs to bounce back for the next day’s mile. Keep your fridge stocked, keep your liquids iced, and remember that fall is coming!
