As runners, we know that fueling is key to getting through those long miles. Most of the time, that means trusty gels, chews, or waffles. My personal favorites are HoneyStinger waffles and gels, or even a classic GU energy gel when you need a quick burst of energy on the road.
But what happens when spooky season rolls around, and the house is suddenly full of fun-size chocolates, sugary gummies, and endless candy bowls? Well, maybe it’s time to turn those treats into tricks for your training plan! Let’s talk about how to turn Halloween candy into effective (and budget-friendly) running fuel.
This post has been updated from its original, published October 21, 2025.

Traditional Running Fuel Vs. The Candy Stash
Before we dive into the candy stash, let’s give credit where it’s deserved. Running-specific fuels like HoneyStinger or GU are designed specifically for performance. They’re quick-digesting, easy to transport, and engineered to be gentle on the stomach with precise ratios of carbs, electrolytes, and calories.
On the downside? They can get pricey real fast. Plus, for those of us with texture preferences, swallowing an energy gel at mile 8 isn’t always the most pleasant experience.

Enter the Halloween candy.

Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups
Chocolate and peanut butter is pretty much the perfect combination. On paper, it’s everything a runner could want: carbs, sugar, and a touch of fat. In practice, Reese’s can be a little tricky mid-run. Chocolate melts fast (especially in the Florida heat!), and the fat from the peanut butter can sit heavy in your stomach while pounding the pavement. The verdict: A Reese’s pumpkin is the ultimate pre-run snack or post-run reward! Pro tip: Store them in the freezer for a chilly, delicious post-workout treat.

Snickers Really Satisfies
If you think about it, Snickers are really just energy bars in disguise. They’ve got sugar for quick energy, fat for long-lasting calories, and the peanuts even provide a little protein boost! They’re super balanced for a sweet treat, making them a solid option for pre-run fuel or a post-run recovery snack.
Just keep in mind that chocolate melts easily on warm days or when squished in a running belt or pocket. Freezing them in advance is a game-changer if this is your treat of choice!

Nerds Gummy Clusters
Here we go! Nerds Gummy Clusters are pure sugar energy with a crunchy, chewy texture that makes them an absolute top-tier option on the run. They deliver an instant carb boost right when you hit a wall, and best of all: they don’t melt!
Because they can get a little sticky in warmer weather, just portion them out into a small sandwich baggie for easy grabbing out of your vest or pocket.

Classic Gummies + Fruit Chews
Classic gummies and fruit chews have been a runner’s staple forever. Bonus points that you can them in spooky shapes and flavors for the season. They’re light and sweet and give you a quick boost of carbs without making a mess. You can easily portion the out before a run and stow them in your belt or tuck them in your sports bra. True, they don’t usually have any electrolytes, but you can solve that by pairing them with your favorite sports drink. They’re inexpensive, easy to find in stores, and way more delicious than your typical gel.

Budget-Friendly Real Food Options for Long Miles
Looking for more ways to mix up your fueling without buying expensive nutrition packs? Here are a few easy, budget-friendly real food options runners swear by:
- Dried Fruit: Dates, dried mango, or apricots (nature’s energy chews!).
- Pretzels: Perfect for a quick crunch and a much-needed hit of sodium/salt.
- Applesauce Packets: Easy to swallow, sweet, and super gentle on the stomach.
- Pop-Tarts or Fig Newtons: Carbohydrate powerhouses for pre-run energy.

Running fuel doesn’t have to be boring, technical, or expensive. At this time of year, raiding your Halloween candy stash can be a fun way to shake up your routine and save a few dollars on training fuel. After all, running should bring you joy, and if that means rewarding yourself at the finish line with a chocolate peanut butter pumpkin, you’ve got my full stamp of approval!

Its nice to have other options when you get sick of gels! Candy can make great fuel for running. I do worry about heavier candy like reeses giving me a stomach ache, but gummies and fruit chews are perfect.
Now this is a great Halloween trick!
I’ve always been a fan of keeping fueling simple, but I’ve never thought of using Halloween candy for running fuel. The Nerds Gummy Clusters sound like a fun option, although I’d probably be more tempted to eat them all before the run than save them for mile 8! And a frozen Reese’s pumpkin as a post-run treat sounds amazing!
I love pop tarts pre-run, but I’ve gotten really sick of them lately. I think I’ll need to set aside some of my kids Halloween candy this year to use for running!
Okay, I love this idea! I rarely run far enough to need extra fuel but I’m ready to try a Snickers next time I do.
