If you’ve spent any time in St. Augustine or on Florida’s First Coast, you know it’s something special. From ocean views to pockets of history, almost every mile has a story to share. It’s one I never get tired of experiencing. Let’s talk about five things I love about running here.

Sunrise Miles On The Water
The First Coast is full of absolutely beautiful beaches, many of which are perfect for sunrise runs. I love that within 20 minutes, I can have my sneakers firmly planted on sand. Vilano is closest to me and offers a great flat expanse that is perfect for morning miles, but there are also amazing options north with Jacksonville, Atlantic, and Fernandina Beaches, or south with St. Augustine, Butler, and Crescent Beaches. It’s always good for the soul.

There’s History Around Every Corner
St. Augustine proudly proclaims itself as the oldest city in the nation, and visiting the downtown area can be like stepping back in time. From cobblestones to coquina walls to historic buildings boasting beautiful architecture, to haunted corners, there’s no shortage to the history you’ll find. Be mindful of the cobblestone and uneven streets, but don’t hesitate to take it all in!

Variety Is The Spice Of The First Coast
I really love that there are so many great options for running in our area. Sure, you have the beach and Old Town, but that’s just scratching the surface. While planned communities aren’t always well-loved, we have so many neighborhoods with great, well lit sidewalks that make for awesome running paths. There are trails, bridges, ands even treks through the local farms. It’s amazing that you can find a little bit of anything all in 40 minutes.

Year Round Running
Yes, we complain about the heat, but the truth is, North Florida supports year round running, comfortably and safely. The local race companies offer events all 12 months (summers are for 5Ks, while you’ll find 10Ks, 15Ks, half marathons, and two full marathons in the winter months). Our perfect running season is the opposite of most other places, but that’s ok! I think the brutal summers are a fair trade off for our falls and winters.

A Community That Shows Up
North Florida welcomes its runners. With one of the top running stores in the country located here (with its own dedicated race division), it’s a sport that continues to thrive. While I don’t always participate in the group runs due to distance and schedule, it’s nice to know I have options should I choose to take advantage of them. There are free groups, membership based clubs, and even two established ParkRuns. Community makes everything wonderful.
