Fall is famous for ghost tours, spooky decor, and Halloween fun, but it’s also a great time for a personal reset. As we head into the final months of the year, I’ve been thinking a lot about the habits, mindsets, and expectations that no longer serve me.
Training hard, managing busy family schedules, and keeping up with daily life takes energy. To make space for the things that really matter, some things have to go. Here are 5 things I’m ghosting this fall, and what I’m choosing to focus on instead.

Comparison On Social Media
It’s easy to look at someone else’s training log, pace, or flawless fall photos and feel like you aren’t doing enough. But running another person’s race only steals the joy from your own progress. I’m stepping back from comparing my mileage, workout schedule, or season of life to anyone else’s. My goals belong to me, and that is more than enough.

The Need To Say “Yes” To Every Invitation
Autumn calendars fill up fast with events, school activities, race sign-ups, and holiday gatherings. Trying to attend everything leads straight to burnout. This season, I’m saying no to events that drain my energy so I can say yes to rest, quality time with family, and quiet evenings at home. Protecting your downtime is part of staying healthy.

Guilt Around Rest Days
Taking a day off from running or strength work used to come with a side of guilt. But rest is where muscle rebuilds and mental stamina recharges. I’m officially ghosting the idea that every day needs to be a hard workout day. Swapping a run for an easy walk, a stretching session, or an afternoon on the couch is a necessary part of staying strong for the long haul.

Uncomfortable, Worn-Out Gear
Life is too short to run in shoes that are past their prime, socks that cause blisters, or clothes that ride up during a workout. This fall, I’m clearing out old athletic wear that doesn’t fit or feel good anymore. Investing in gear that supports your body makes every mile better.

The All-Or-Nothing Mindset
If a busy morning cuts a planned four-mile run down to two miles, that isn’t a failure. It’s still two miles of movement. I’m letting go of the idea that a workout only counts if it goes perfectly according to plan. Consistently showing up, even in small ways, always beats waiting for ideal conditions.

Ghosting these habits isn’t about being negative. It’s about protecting your time, energy, and peace of mind so you can enjoy the season. When you let go of expectations that wear you down, you make room for the traditions, goals, and quiet moments that bring joy.
What is one habit or mindset you are leaving behind this fall?
