Happy Easter to all my friends and readers who celebrate! This is a bizarre Easter – the bunny has managed a small basket and egg hunt for little man. We will have a very casual dinner, and the boys voted for pajamas all day. This is not the way we do holidays and it’s a little hard to get excited about things, but we are going to do our best.
Sunday – 1.75 mile walk + Day 12 of 2 Week Core Challenge + PT Exercises
I was exhausted after Saturday’s virtual 5K, and only did a small recovery walk with Mr PugRunner in the morning.
Little man finished off a weekend of virtual camping for Scouts. He put up his tent in the loft, slept there, cooked meals for the family and made oven s’mores. It was a cute little break, especially since his Troop is missing out on so many camping trips right now.
I was also really excited to be almost done with the 2 Week Core Challenge. Core is not my favorite.
- Scarecrows (5 lb weights): 60 seconds
- Front Plank: 60 seconds
- Scissor Kicks: 60 seconds
- Flutter Kicks: 60 seconds
Monday – 3.7 mile walk + Day 13 of 2 Week Core Challenge + PT Exercises
On Monday, I messed up my route and ended up walking almost four miles with Mr. PugRunner. Oops.
Little man had to start crisis/distance learning for real on Monday morning (last week was kind of the test of everything). He was on point, though, and got right in place to do his work.
It ended up being a bit of a long day but we had a special visitor: Taco the Therapy Mini! I wanted to hug on him so badly, but kept my 6+ feet of distance.
- Scarecrows (5 lb weights): 60 seconds
- Front Plank: 60 seconds
- Straight Leg Sit-ups: 60 seconds
- Toe Touches: 60 seconds
Tuesday – 3.2 mile walk + Day 14 of 2 Week Core Challenge + PT Exercises
Every walk has me feeling stronger and stronger.
Little man had his busiest day yet. In addition to schoolwork, he had to set up a pretty cool egg experiment.
And then he had clarinet lessons, karate class and his first virtual Scouts meeting. He was so happy to see his Troop and Patrol friends.
And I was not at all sorry to say goodbye to the Core Challenge!
- Scarecrows (5 lb weights): 60 seconds
- Front Plank: 60 seconds
- Superman: 60 seconds
- Leg Circles: 60 seconds
Wednesday – 3.4 mile walk + Day 1 of Crazy 8s Challenge + PT Exercises
You guessed it: my morning started with a brisk walk.
My friend, L, suggested we try this Crazy Eights Challenge, and I was all on board until we got down to it.
I still can’t do jumping jacks, so I had to modify those and the mountain climbers. Alternating lunges and butt kicks both were so slow I don’t know that I was getting any fitness benefit whatsoever. Once I completed one circuit, there was no way I could go back for two more. I felt so defeated by my limitations, and even though I know it’s temporary, it was kind of my breaking point for the week.
On the plus side, we had a mobile mechanic come to the house to check out our older car (the one that overheated and needed to be towed back home). We were super lucky: instead of a cracked engine block as I feared, it was just some old hoses that were easy (and not super costly!) to replace. Whew.
Thursday – 3.2 mile walk + + PT Exercises
I popped up on Thursday morning, ready for a great day. My walk was solid and I was pretty stoked to be able to grow my tree!
Things went downhill fairly quickly. After at home is getting to all of us, and little man had a rough day with school. He has been doing a great job, but he held a lot of his work until the end of the week, and then got crushed by how much he had to do.
Mr. PugRunner eventually had to take over because I was at the end of my rope, and they got through everything like champs.
Friday – 3.3 mile walk + PT Exercises
Friday was technically a day off from school so we didn’t have to get up and moving in the morning. I ended up going for a
I laid out my Flat Sparkle for the next day: we were all ready for unicorns!
Saturday – 3.15 mile walk + Crazy 8s + PT Exercises
Happy Team Sparkle Virtual Race and Un-Canceled Project 5K Day! Mr PugRunner joined me and I hit another PR in honor of unicorns and hope!
I also went back for another round of Crazy Eights. Again, I only did one circuit, but I felt better about it, so that counts.
The rest of the day was spent in Easter prep. We’ve really leaned into the whole “safer at home” recommendations and so our house hasn’t been loaded down with special treats or gifts or decor like it would normally be. Only one person leaves the house and does any of the shopping, and most of our online purchases have been essential things. Little man said it didn’t even feel like Easter. Ugh.
I made German potato salad and a red velvet cake with cream cheese frosting. Little man dyed the Easter eggs.
That evening, we rented Trolls World Tour and enjoyed it with some bagel bites. Then we turned in and hoped the Easter Bunny would be able to deliver a few things for the holiday.
Goal-getting
My plan this week was to stay in the three to four mile range, comfortably. It’s going well. I have almost no swelling anymore, and while I do limp first thing in the morning and later in the day, it’s not awful. I kind of wish I could get in a pool to start strengthening my ankle, but it’s not to be.
Another week in “quarantine” and we are all feeling it (just like everyone else). Even as an introvert, it’s wearing not leaving the house except for daily walks and fresh air. We miss my parents and our friends. We miss the privilege of running to the store because we forgot an ingredient for dinner, or going to the movies or just getting out and about. With all that, we continue to be grateful for our health and that of those around us.
I took a bit of a break from Twitter this week because I was getting way too much “information” from too many hostile sources on all sides of the situation, and it was bringing me way down. I like to know what’s going on, but sometimes, it’s just too much.
I am linking up with the Weekly Rundown, with Confessions of A Mother Runner and Running on the Fly! Check them out!
How was your week in training?
Are you taking breaks from social media to deal with the input of information?
Jessie says
What a great active week! Virtual camping- I love it. 🙂 What a unique time we are in. I’m so glad your recovery has gone so well! You’re an inspiration!
runswithpugs says
That means a lot. I’m so glad I had awesome athletes like you and Darlene, among others, to show me it can be done. Maybe not in my timeframe, but we are getting there. <3

Congrats on your Unicorn PR! The boys thought that we were crazy this morning for making Easter brunch. I got burned out on social a long time ago, so nothing has really changed there. Twitter is always the toughest of the bunch, I can’t remember the last time I was on and I sure don’t plan to go back…maybe ever? I do like IG, maybe because the only people I follow there are other bloggers;-)

Twitter is rough. I don’t participate very often, but I do find it to be a great source of ALL THE INFORMATION. Sure, some of it’s misinformation, but that’s how I identify the people I should always avoid.
I love IG – so many cute animals and yummy food pics. 🙂
We should have done brunch. I just didn’t feel like getting up to make it. I miss fancy brunch and can’t wait to go when this is over.
Deborah Brooks says
You are getting stronger by the week! Way to keep up the PT and the walking. How cute is the virtual camping trip? What a fun idea
runswithpugs says
It was really cute and he did great. He didn’t need the “night under the stars” credit for his next advancement, which is great. We are in snake season, and there was no way I was putting him out in the yard for the weekend LOL.
Darlene S. Cardillo says
Taking it day by day. Working at home is a drag. And I miss my social life.
We are healthy. I am getting in a run or walk everyday. And exploring new places.
This will end.
You are doing great.
runswithpugs says
I know how much you miss your friends and social stuff.
It will end and I cannot wait for the day!
Kim G says
That unicorn mode shirt is amazing! I saw a lot of photos on Instagram from the Team Sparkle Virtual Race and it looked so fun. You’re getting stronger each week and it’s great to see 🙂
I can totally relate to what you are saying about being an introvert, but still being over quarantine. I still think I’ll be hesitant about going to highly populated places after this is over, but I can’t wait to go to restaurants, hug my friends, etc.
runswithpugs says
I love the Team Sparkle initiative with this. It’s just so great how some brands are really making so much lemonade out of this awful situation.
I have no idea how I’m going to people again. I was just starting to venture back out when this started. It was a complete sensory overload and that was when I was actually making smaller trips out for PT and coffee and things like that. Now I’m just utterly shut off. It’s an eerie feeling.
Wendy says
Congrats on your 5k PR! It might not feel like you’re making progress, but you really are!!
I feel you on the ups and downs–I only left the house to run and that’s it. It’s a very strange feeling. My son is drowing in classwork and that has been very hard on him. Hoping this all comes to an end soon.
runswithpugs says
I’m sorry for your son. It’s just so hard to be cooped up and doing the education virtually, in addition to being weighed down by all the negativity and anxiety that we are all facing.
I don’t know what it’s like beyond the bubble of my neighborhood. Much as I want to be out again, I think it’s going to be a huge culture shock for me to be around people again. The few times I ventured out before this all began was such a terrible sensory overload, and that’s when I was making smaller trips to PT and Dunkin and the store. Now, I’m completely shut off and have no idea how I’m going to function around people again.

Yeah, my twitter is almost nil save for a list of partners and IRL friends who I trust not to post the crazy

Virtual camping – what a cool idea. Sorry he had a rough end to this week
runswithpugs says
Smart lady!
Grumpy unicorn is one of my favorites.
It was cool. I loved that he pulled up the campfire video for the photo. He will be ok. It’s not easy for anyone and he’s really just rocking it in general.
Lisa @ Mile by Mile says
I almost never go on twitter anymore. I feel like social media has been getting to alot of people lately. I am still liking Instagram because everything I see there is pretty positive (or at least realistic, not mean or super negative). You had a great week of workouts! I’m sure there will be lots of ups and downs but you just have to look at how much progress you are making overall.
runswithpugs says
Instagram has all the cute animals, yummy food and awesome runners. I read Twitter because I really do like to see all sides of arguments and belief systems and I feel I get a good slice of everything. It’s rarely too much for me (I’m pretty good at brushing off the horrible things), but sometimes I read things and it just weighs so heavily. Ugh.
Catrina says
Congrats on your 5k PR! I like that you could combine two virtual races, the Happy Team Sparkle and the Hope Un-cancelled!
I feel sorry for your son being flooded with schoolwork. It’s not a fun time for him, but he seems to be making the best of it!
runswithpugs says
It’s really fun. I guess I could do them on two separate days, but I’m trying to focus on smaller goals right now.
He’ll be ok. Thankfully, the teachers are being very kind and accommodating. And he learned the lesson that it’s better to get things done earlier rather than be scrambling at the last minute. This is why I’m the meanest mom lol.
Judy @Chocolaterunsjudy says
Twitter? What’s that, LOL! or pretty much any social media.
I love the virtual camping (hope it helped little man).
Well, part of Passover is to say next year in Jerusalem. So next year no doubt Easter will be much better!
You’re going great. Even if you’re going slow with ST, you’re still getting benefits. In fact, going slow usually means you’re actually working harder — so I’d say you’re getting MORE benefits out of it.
runswithpugs says
Everything next year has to be much better.
You’re right about the speed. It’s just frustrating. This morning I was out walking and a guy was running. He lives about a block from me and was like come one! You can run this! I’ll run with you! And social distancing aside, I said no, and that I couldn’t right now. And his response: “Sure you can! Come on!” I know his heart was in the right place and he was being encouraging, but it stung. Today, I am going to wear my “I do my own stunts” shirt because then at least I don’t have to point out that I am rehabbing from injury lol.
Kimberly Hatting says
Yeah, Twitter ain’t my game LOL I “share” all of my Insta posts there (because I feel like I need to at least be in the loop), but I seldom ever get on and scroll. Too much information (and definitely not in a good way). Facebook has it’s dark moments as well….why can’t we just share pics of family/friends/outings (well, when we HAD outings LOL)? Our Easter was the bare minimum, but it was nice given the circumstances.
runswithpugs says
I really try to avoid it, but I’ve also been working on boosting my blog, and so it’s a vicious cycle.
I wish I had pictures of outings to share LOL. I want out!

Glad to hear that your walks are getting better! Kudos on completing the core challenge – I’m terrible at sticking to those things!
Virtual camping actually sounds like a lot of fun! I’m glad your son is still able to stay connected with his fellow Scouts. Is there a badge for surviving the quarantine with sanity intact? Lol!
Happy Easter! You still managed to be pretty festive! I’ve gotta do a better job next year!

I’m terrible, too, and at the end I almost gave up!
I loved the camping and I hope they do it again when more kids in his troop participate. At the very least, it was a change of pace and filled up a few hours.

Congrats on your 5K PR! You are getting stronger every day – it’s great to see all of the hard work you put in paying off!
I’m sorry your son had a tough time towards the end of the week. Virtual learning is hard – my youngest is especially missing being in the classroom and hanging with his friends.
In general, I’ve cut way back on my social media exposure – Twitter is always a bit of the wild, wild west and it seems to be even worse now! And I feel like FB is getting a little dark lately.
runswithpugs says
I want to be informed, but I’m not sure how much more I can take. This is all just draining me. Ugh.
My son misses his friends and the human contact, too. It’s so awful for them right now, and I am so proud of all of them 🙁

It’s so great your little man is able to stay so active virtually. Although I’m sure he misses his friends a lot, the virtual camping looks fun! Good for you for sticking to your workouts and challenges. That Crazy 8’s thing is no joke! We skipped the egg dying this year but the kids were quite content with their massive egg hunt. The only reason I had all the candy/treats is because I planned to do it while Thing 1 was home on spring break. Who knew then that she’d be home indefinitely??
runswithpugs says
Right? That must be so nice for you to have her safe with you.
The Crazy 8s is the devil! I am just not there in my fitness, even though I want to be!

I miss Facebook a little bit because I could see what my family and friends are doing but also it was just too much with the political and arguments. I love the top you wore on your virtual 5k!!! I am surprised at how much work your son has to do. Thanks to you and your husband for making sure he gets his work done. Yeah, that isn’t happening with my kids here. 🙁

We are trying. He’s doing ok, but also getting very frustrated and angry. I get it. I do. But we are all in the same boat. I am so grateful for his teachers and the administration, but sad that this is how it’s playing out.
Coco says
Wait, tell me more about Taco? That sight would brighten my day but Scooby probably would freak out. It’s great to see your recovery going so well!
runswithpugs says
So we live in a semi-rural area. I can get to a horse farm/boarding stable within five minutes. There is a cattle ranch nearby and a big cat rescue within walking distance. My neighbor owns a full size horse and a therapy mini (her job is taking the mini to hospitals and to visit people in need of therapy). She is testing him in her minivan (he fits in the back), so she brought him over to the house from where she boards him just to work on getting him used to transport. It was a darn fine day.
Lisa @ TechChick Adventures says
The virtual camping is a good option when the real thing won’t work. Good to see they can come up with some alternatives! One thing I didn’t think about was my son’s braces. He’s been wearing rubber bands to move teeth and because he won’t be going in to see anyone for his regular appointment, they told the kids to just wear the rubber bands at night. He’s so close to getting them off. I hope the extra time won’t put his teeth in the wrong alignment!
Glad your car was a minor repair. Phew!!

People were mostly reasonable on my social media for the first couple weeks, but the conspiracy theories and general nastiness have been popping up recently.

I think people are tired and angry and done. They are looking for anything and everything to get answers, which I get. I want answers and an end date. But I also understand what we are trying to accomplish. It’s good to see all sides, and I just wish more people could show more kindness.
